¹Fiule, dacă te-ai pus chezaş pentru aproapele tău, dacă te-ai prins pentru altul,

¹My son, if you have become collateral for your neighbor, if you have struck your hands in pledge for a stranger;

²dacă eşti legat prin făgăduinţa gurii tale, dacă eşti prins de cuvintele gurii tale,

²You are trapped by the words of your mouth. You are ensnared with the words of your mouth.

³fă totuş lucrul acesta, fiule: desleagă-te, căci ai căzut în mîna aproapelui tău! De aceea du-te, aruncă-te cu faţa la pămînt, şi stăruieşte de el.

³Do this now, my son, and deliver yourself, since you have come into the hand of your neighbor. Go, humble yourself. Press your plea with your neighbor.

⁴Nu da somn ochilor tăi, nici aţipire pleoapelor tale!

⁴Give no sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids.

⁵Scapă din mîna lui cum scapă căprioara din mîna vînătorului, şi ca pasărea din mîna păsărarului...

⁵Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler.

⁶Du-te la furnică, leneşule; uită-te cu băgare de seamă la căile ei, şi înţelepţeşte-te!

⁶Go to the ant, you sluggard. Consider her ways, and be wise;

⁷Ea n'are nici căpetenie, nici priveghetor, nici stăpîn;

⁸totuş îşi pregăteşte hrana vara, şi strînge de ale mîncării în timpul secerişului.

⁸provides her bread in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest.

⁹Pînă cînd vei sta culcat, leneşule? Cînd te vei scula din somnul tău?

⁹How long will you sleep, sluggard? When will you arise out of your sleep?

¹⁰Să mai dormi puţin, să mai aţipeşti puţin, să mai încrucişezi puţin mînile ca să dormi!...

¹⁰A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

¹¹Şi sărăcia vine peste tine, ca un hoţ, şi lipsa, ca un om înarmat.

¹¹so your poverty will come as a robber, and your scarcity as an armed man.

¹²Omul de nimic, omul nelegiuit, umblă cu neadevărul în gură,

¹²A worthless person, a man of iniquity, is he who walks with a perverse mouth;

¹³clipeşte din ochi, dă din picior, şi face semne cu degetele.

¹³who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet, who motions with his fingers;

¹⁴Răutatea este în inima lui, urzeşte lucrurile rele într'una, şi stîrneşte certuri.

¹⁴in whose heart is perverseness, who devises evil continually, who always sows discord.

¹⁵De aceea nimicirea îi va veni pe neaşteptate; va fi zdrobit deodată, şi fără leac.

¹⁵Therefore his calamity will come suddenly. He will be broken suddenly, and that without remedy.

¹⁶Şase lucruri urăşte Domnul, şi chiar şapte Îi sînt urîte:

¹⁶There are six things which Yahweh hates; yes, seven which are an abomination to him:

¹⁷ochii trufaşi, limba mincinoasă, mînile... cari varsă sînge nevinovat,

¹⁷haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood;

¹⁸inima care urzeşte planuri nelegiuite, picioarele cari aleargă repede la rău,

¹⁸a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are swift in running to mischief,

¹⁹martorul mincinos, care spune minciuni, şi cel ce stîrneşte certuri între fraţi.

¹⁹a false witness who utters lies, and he who sows discord among brothers.

²⁰Fiule, păzeşte sfaturile tatălui tău, şi nu lepăda învăţătura mamei tale:

²⁰My son, keep your father’s commandment, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching.

²¹leagă-le necurmat la inimă, atîrnă-le de gît.

²¹Bind them continually on your heart. Tie them around your neck.

²²Ele te vor însoţi în mersul tău, te vor păzi în pat, şi îţi vor vorbi la deşteptare!

²²When you walk, it will lead you. When you sleep, it will watch over you. When you awake, it will talk with you.

²³Căci sfatul este o candelă, învăţătura este o lumină, iar îndemnul şi mustrarea sînt calea vieţii.

²³For the commandment is a lamp, and the law is light. Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,

²⁴Ele te vor feri de femeia stricată, de limba ademenitoare a celei străine.

²⁴to keep you from the immoral woman, from the flattery of the wayward wife’s tongue.

²⁵N'o pofti în inima ta pentru frumuseţa ei, şi nu te lăsa ademenit de pleoapele ei.

²⁵Don’t lust after her beauty in your heart, neither let her captivate you with her eyelids.

²⁶Căci pentru o femeie curvă, omul ajunge de nu mai rămîne decît cu o bucată de pîne, şi femeia măritată întinde... o cursă unui suflet scump.

²⁶For a prostitute reduces you to a piece of bread. The adulteress hunts for your precious life.

²⁷Poate cineva să ia foc în sîn, fără să i se aprindă hainele?

²⁷Can a man scoop fire into his lap, and his clothes not be burned?

²⁸Sau poate merge cineva pe cărbuni aprinşi, fără să -i ardă picioarele?

²⁸Or can one walk on hot coals, and his feet not be scorched?

²⁹Tot aşa este şi cu cel ce se duce la nevasta aproapelui său: ori cine se atinge de ea nu va rămînea nepedepsit.

²⁹So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife. Whoever touches her will not be unpunished.

³⁰Hoţul nu este urgisit cînd fură ca să-şi potolească foamea, căci îi este foame;

³⁰Men don’t despise a thief, if he steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry:

³¹Şi dacă este prins, trebuie să dea înapoi înşeptit, să dea chiar tot ce are în casă.

³¹but if he is found, he shall restore seven times. He shall give all the wealth of his house.

³²Dar cel ce preacurveşte cu o femeie este un om fără minte, singur îşi pierde viaţa cine face aşa.

³²He who commits adultery with a woman is void of understanding. He who does it destroys his own soul.

³³Nu va avea decît rană şi ruşine, şi ocara nu i se va şterge.

³³He will get wounds and dishonor. His reproach will not be wiped away.

³⁴Căci gelozia înfurie pe un bărbat, şi n'are milă în ziua răzbunării;

³⁴For jealousy arouses the fury of the husband. He won’t spare in the day of vengeance.

³⁵nu se uită la niciun preţ de răscumpărare, şi nu se lasă înduplecat nici chiar de cel mai mare dar.

³⁵He won’t regard any ransom, neither will he rest content, though you give many gifts.
