1ดาวิดนึกในใจว่า "ข้าคงจะพินาศสักวันหนึ่งด้วยมือของซาอูล ไม่มีสิ่งใดดีกว่าที่ข้าจะหนีไปอยู่ที่แผ่นดินคนฟีลิสเตีย แล้วซาอูลก็จะทรงเลิกไม่ติดตามข้าอีกภายในพรมแดนอิสราเอล และข้าจะรอดพ้นจากมือของท่านได้"
1David said in his heart, “I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul will despair of me, to seek me any more in all the borders of Israel. So shall I escape out of his hand.”
2ดาวิดจึงลุกขึ้นยกข้ามไป ทั้งตัวท่านและคนที่อยู่กับท่านหกร้อยคนด้วยกัน ไปหาอาคีชบุตรชายมาโอค กษัตริย์เมืองกัท
2David arose, and passed over, he and the six hundred men who were with him, to Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath.
3และดาวิดก็อาศัยอยู่กับอาคีชที่เมืองกัท คือตัวท่านและคนของท่าน ทุกคนมีครัวเรือนไปด้วย ทั้งดาวิดพร้อมกับภรรยาสองคน คืออาหิโนอัมชาวยิสเรเอล และอาบีกายิลชาวคารเมลแม่ม่ายของนาบาล
3David lived with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, even David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal’s wife.
4และเมื่อมีคนไปทูลซาอูลว่า ดาวิดได้หนีไปเมืองกัทแล้ว พระองค์ก็มิได้แสวงท่านอีกต่อไป
4It was told Saul that David was fled to Gath: and he sought no more again for him.
5แล้วดาวิดจึงทูลอาคีชว่า "ถ้าบัดนี้ข้าพระองค์ได้รับพระกรุณาในสายพระเนตรของพระองค์ ขอทรงให้เขามอบที่ในหัวเมืองแก่ข้าพระองค์สักแห่งหนึ่ง เพื่อข้าพระองค์จะได้อาศัยอยู่ที่นั่น ไฉนผู้รับใช้ของพระองค์จะอยู่ในราชธานีกับพระองค์เล่า"
5David said to Achish, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, let them give me a place in one of the cities in the country, that I may dwell there. For why should your servant dwell in the royal city with you?”
6ในวันนั้นอาคีชทรงมอบเมืองศิกลากให้ ศิกลากจึงเป็นหัวเมืองขึ้นแก่กษัตริย์ยูดาห์จนถึงทุกวันนี้
6Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day: why Ziklag pertains to the kings of Judah to this day.
7ระยะเวลาที่ดาวิดอาศัยอยู่ในแผ่นดินฟีลิสเตียนั้นเป็นหนึ่งปีกับสี่เดือน
7The number of the days that David lived in the country of the Philistines was a full year and four months.
8ฝ่ายดาวิดกับคนของท่านก็ขึ้นไปปล้นชาวเกชูร์ คนเกซไรต์และคนอามาเลข เพราะประชาชาติเหล่านี้เป็นชาวแผ่นดินนั้นตั้งแต่สมัยโบราณ ไกลไปจนถึงเมืองชูร์ถึงแผ่นดินอียิปต์
8David and his men went up, and made a raid on the Geshurites, and the Girzites, and the Amalekites; for those were the inhabitants of the land, who were of old, as you go to Shur, even to the land of Egypt.
9ดาวิดก็โจมตีแผ่นดินนั้น ไม่ไว้ชีวิตผู้ชายหรือผู้หญิง แต่ริบแกะ วัว ลา อูฐ และเสื้อผ้า แล้วกลับมาหาอาคีช
9David struck the land, and saved neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, and the cattle, and the donkeys, and the camels, and the clothing; and he returned, and came to Achish.
10อาคีชถามว่า "วันนี้ท่านไปปล้นผู้ใดมา" ดาวิดก็ทูลว่า "ปล้นถิ่นใต้ที่แผ่นดินยูดาห์ ปล้นถิ่นใต้ที่คนเยราเมเอล และปล้นถิ่นใต้คนเคไนต์"
10Achish said, “Against whom have you made a raid today?” David said, “Against the South of Judah, against the South of the Jerahmeelites, and against the South of the Kenites.”
11ดาวิดมิได้ไว้ชีวิตผู้ชายหรือผู้หญิง ที่จะนำข่าวมาที่เมืองกัทโดยคิดว่า "เกรงว่าเขาจะบอกเรื่องของเราและกล่าวว่า `ดาวิดได้ทำอย่างนั้นๆ และนี่จะเป็นวิธีการขณะที่ท่านอาศัยอยู่ในแผ่นดินฟีลิสเตีย'"
11David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring them to Gath, saying, “Lest they should tell of us, saying, ‘David this, and this has been his way all the time he has lived in the country of the Philistines.’”
12อาคีชทรงวางพระทัยในดาวิดด้วยทรงดำริว่า "เขาได้กระทำให้อิสราเอลชนชาติของเขาเกลียดอย่างที่สุด เพราะฉะนั้นเขาจึงเป็นผู้รับใช้ของเราได้ตลอดไป"
12Achish believed David, saying, “He has made his people Israel utterly to abhor him. Therefore he shall be my servant forever.”
