1เรโหโบอัมได้ไปยังเมืองเชเคม เพราะอิสราเอลทั้งปวงได้มายังเชเคมเพื่อจะตั้งท่านให้เป็นกษัตริย์
1Rehoboam went to Shechem; for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.
2และอยู่มาเมื่อเยโรโบอัมบุตรชายเนบัทได้ยินเรื่องนั้น เพราะท่านยังอยู่ในอียิปต์ที่ซึ่งท่านหนีไปจากพระพักตร์กษัตริย์ซาโลมอน แล้วเยโรโบอัมกลับจากอียิปต์
2It happened, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it, (for he was in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of king Solomon), that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.
3เขาทั้งหลายก็ใช้คนไปเรียนท่าน และเยโรโบอัมกับอิสราเอลทั้งหมดได้มาและทูลเรโหโบอัมว่า
3They sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all Israel came, and they spoke to Rehoboam, saying,
4"พระราชบิดาของพระองค์ได้กระทำให้แอกของข้าพระองค์ทุกข์หนัก เพราะฉะนั้นบัดนี้ขอทรงผ่อนการปรนนิบัติอย่างทุกข์หนักของพระราชบิดาของพระองค์ และแอกอันหนักของพระองค์เหนือข้าพระองค์ทั้งหลายให้เบาลงเสีย และข้าพระองค์ทั้งหลายจะปรนนิบัติพระองค์"
4“Your father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make you the grievous service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you.”
5พระองค์ตรัสกับเขาว่า "สิ้นสามวันจงกลับมาหาเราอีก" ประชาชนจึงกลับไปเสีย
5He said to them, “Come again to me after three days.” The people departed.
6แล้วกษัตริย์เรโหโบอัมก็ทรงปรึกษากับบรรดาผู้เฒ่า ผู้อยู่งานประจำซาโลมอนราชบิดาของพระองค์ขณะเมื่อพระองค์ยังทรงพระชนม์อยู่ว่า "ท่านทั้งหลายจะแนะนำเราให้ตอบประชาชนนี้อย่างไร"
6King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, “What counsel do you give me to return answer to this people?”
7เขาทั้งหลายทูลพระองค์ว่า "ถ้าพระองค์ทรงเมตตาแก่ประชาชนนี้และให้เขาพอใจ และตรัสตอบคำดีแก่เขา เขาทั้งหลายจะเป็นผู้รับใช้ของพระองค์เป็นนิตย์"
7They spoke to him, saying, “If you are kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.”
8แต่พระองค์ทรงทอดทิ้งคำปรึกษาซึ่งผู้เฒ่าถวายนั้นเสีย และไปปรึกษากับคนหนุ่มซึ่งเติบโตขึ้นมาพร้อมกับพระองค์และอยู่งานประจำพระองค์
8But he forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him.
9และพระองค์ตรัสกับเขาทั้งหลายว่า "ท่านจะแนะนำเราอย่างไร เพื่อพวกเราจะตอบประชาชนนี้ผู้ที่ทูลเราว่า `ขอทรงผ่อนแอกซึ่งพระราชบิดาของพระองค์วางอยู่เหนือข้าพระองค์ทั้งหลายให้เบาลง'"
9He said to them, “What counsel do you give, that we may return answer to this people, who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Make the yoke that your father put on us lighter?’”
10และคนหนุ่มเหล่านั้นผู้ได้เติบโตมาพร้อมกับพระองค์ทูลพระองค์ว่า "พระองค์จงตรัสดังนี้แก่ประชาชนนี้ ผู้ทูลพระองค์ว่า `พระราชบิดาของพระองค์ได้ทรงกระทำให้แอกของข้าพระองค์ทั้งหลายทุกข์หนัก แต่ขอพระองค์ทรงผ่อนแก่ข้าพระองค์ให้เบาลง' นั้น พระองค์จงตรัสแก่เขาทั้งหลายอย่างนี้ว่า `นิ้วก้อยของเราก็หนากว่าเอวแห่งราชบิดาของเรา
10The young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, “Thus you shall tell the people who spoke to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but make it lighter on us;’ thus you shall say to them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist.
11ที่พระราชบิดาของเราวางแอกหนักบนท่านทั้งหลายก็ดีแล้ว เราจะเพิ่มแอกให้แก่ท่านทั้งหลายอีก พระราชบิดาของเราตีสอนท่านทั้งหลายด้วยไม้เรียว แต่เราจะตีสอนท่านทั้งหลายด้วยแส้แมลงป่อง'"
11Now whereas my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.’”
12เยโรโบอัมกับประชาชนทั้งปวงจึงเข้ามาเฝ้าเรโหโบอัมในวันที่สาม ดังที่กษัตริย์รับสั่งว่า "จงมาหาเราอีกในวันที่สาม"
12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king asked, saying, “Come to me again the third day.”
13และกษัตริย์ตรัสตอบเขาทั้งหลายอย่างดุดัน กษัตริย์เรโหโบอัมทรงทอดทิ้งคำปรึกษาของผู้เฒ่าเสีย
13The king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men,
14และตรัสกับเขาทั้งหลายตามคำแนะนำของพวกคนหนุ่มว่า "พระราชบิดาของเราทำแอกของท่านทั้งหลายให้หนัก แต่เราจะเพิ่มให้แก่แอกนั้น พระราชบิดาของเราตีสอนท่านทั้งหลายด้วยไม้เรียว แต่เราจะตีสอนท่านทั้งหลายด้วยแส้แมลงป่อง"
14and spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.”
15กษัตริย์จึงมิได้ทรงฟังเสียงประชาชน เพราะเหตุการณ์นี้เป็นมาแต่พระเจ้า เพื่อพระเยโฮวาห์จะทรงให้พระวจนะของพระองค์ได้สำเร็จ ซึ่งพระองค์ตรัสโดยอาหิยาห์ชาวชีโลห์แก่เยโรโบอัมบุตรชายเนบัท
15So the king didn’t listen to the people; for it was brought about of God, that Yahweh might establish his word, which he spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16และเมื่ออิสราเอลทั้งปวงเห็นว่ากษัตริย์มิได้ทรงฟังเขาทั้งหลาย ประชาชนก็ทูลตอบกษัตริย์ว่า "ข้าพระองค์ทั้งหลายมีส่วนอะไรในดาวิด ข้าพระองค์ทั้งหลายไม่มีส่วนมรดกในบุตรเจสซี โอ อิสราเอลเอ๋ย กลับไปเต็นท์ของตนแต่ละคนเถิด ข้าแต่ดาวิด จงดูแลราชวงศ์ของพระองค์เองเถิด" อิสราเอลทั้งปวงจึงไปยังเต็นท์ของเขาทั้งหลาย
16When all Israel saw that the king didn’t listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, “What portion have we in David? Neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse! Every man to your tents, Israel! Now see to your own house, David.” So all Israel departed to their tents.
17แต่เรโหโบอัมทรงปกครองเหนือประชาชนอิสราเอลผู้อาศัยอยู่ในหัวเมืองยูดาห์
17But as for the children of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18แล้วกษัตริย์เรโหโบอัมทรงใช้ฮาโดรัมนายงานเหนือแรงงานเกณฑ์ไป และประชาชนอิสราเอลก็เอาหินขว้างท่านถึงตาย แล้วกษัตริย์เรโหโบอัมก็ทรงรีบขึ้นรถรบของพระองค์ ทรงหนีไปกรุงเยรูซาเล็ม
18Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the men subject to forced labor; and the children of Israel stoned him to death with stones. King Rehoboam made speed to get himself up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19อิสราเอลจึงกบฏต่อราชวงศ์ของดาวิดถึงทุกวันนี้
19So Israel rebelled against the house of David to this day.
