¹เมื่อเยโธร ปุโรหิตแห่งมีเดียน พ่อตาของโมเสส ได้ยินถึงกิจการทั้งหลายที่พระเจ้าทรงกระทำเพื่อโมเสส และอิสราเอลพลไพร่ของพระองค์ว่า พระเยโฮวาห์ทรงนำอิสราเอลออกจากอียิปต์

¹Now Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, how that Yahweh had brought Israel out of Egypt.

²เยโธรพ่อตาของโมเสสจึงพาศิปโปราห์ภรรยาของโมเสสซึ่งโมเสสได้ส่งกลับไปแต่คราวก่อนนั้น

²Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, received Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her away,

³พร้อมกับบุตรชายทั้งสองคนของนาง คนหนึ่งชื่อเกอร์โชม เพราะโมเสสกล่าวว่า "ข้าพเจ้าเป็นคนต่างด้าวอาศัยอยู่ต่างประเทศ"

³and her two sons. The name of one son was Gershom, “Gershom” sounds like the Hebrew for “an alien there.” for Moses said, “I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land”.

⁴อีกคนหนึ่งชื่อเอลีเยเซอร์ เพราะท่านกล่าวว่า "พระเจ้าของบิดาข้าพเจ้าเป็นผู้อุปถัมภ์ของข้าพเจ้า และทรงให้ข้าพเจ้ารอดจากพระแสงดาบของฟาโรห์"

⁴The name of the other was Eliezer, Eliezer means “God is my helper.” for he said, “My father’s God was my help and delivered me from Pharaoh’s sword.”

⁵เยโธรพ่อตาของโมเสส พาภรรยาและบุตรชายทั้งสองคนนั้นมาหาโมเสสที่ในถิ่นทุรกันดารที่เขาตั้งค่ายอยู่ที่ภูเขาของพระเจ้า

⁵Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses into the wilderness where he was encamped, at the Mountain of God.

⁶ท่านบอกโมเสสว่า "เราคือเยโธรพ่อตาของท่านพาภรรยากับบุตรชายทั้งสองของนางมาหาท่าน"

⁶He said to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, have come to you with your wife, and her two sons with her.”

⁷โมเสสออกไปต้อนรับพ่อตากราบลงและจุบท่าน ท่านทั้งสองไต่ถามถึงทุกข์สุขซึ่งกันและกันแล้วพากันเข้าไปในเต็นท์

⁷Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and bowed and kissed him. They asked each other of their welfare, and they came into the tent.

⁸โมเสสเล่าให้พ่อตาฟังถึงเหตุการณ์ทุกประการซึ่งพระเยโฮวาห์ทรงกระทำกับฟาโรห์ และแก่ชาวอียิปต์เพราะทรงเห็นแก่พวกอิสราเอล ทั้งความทุกข์ยากลำบากทั้งปวงซึ่งเกิดขึ้นแก่คนอิสราเอลในระหว่างทาง และพระเยโฮวาห์ได้ทรงช่วยเขาให้พ้นภัยอย่างไร

⁸Moses told his father-in-law all that Yahweh had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardships that had come on them on the way, and how Yahweh delivered them.

⁹เยโธรก็มีความยินดีที่ได้ทราบพระกรุณาทั้งสิ้นซึ่งพระเยโฮวาห์ได้ทรงสำแดงแก่คนอิสราเอล เมื่อพระองค์ทรงช่วยเขาให้รอดพ้นจากเงื้อมมือชาวอียิปต์

⁹Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which Yahweh had done to Israel, in that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians.

¹⁰เยโธรจึงกล่าวว่า "สาธุการแด่พระเยโฮวาห์ผู้ทรงช่วยท่านทั้งหลายให้รอดจากเงื้อมมือชาวอียิปต์ และจากหัตถ์ของฟาโรห์ และทรงช่วยพลไพร่ให้พ้นจากมือของชาวอียิปต์

¹⁰Jethro said, “Blessed be Yahweh, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

¹¹บัดนี้เราทราบว่าพระเยโฮวาห์ทรงเป็นใหญ่กว่าพระทั้งปวง ใหญ่กว่าพระเหล่านั้นที่ได้กระทำต่อชนชาติอิสราเอลอย่างทะนง"

¹¹Now I know that Yahweh is greater than all gods because of the thing in which they dealt arrogantly against them.”

¹²เยโธรพ่อตาของโมเสสก็นำเครื่องเผาบูชา และเครื่องสัตวบูชาถวายแด่พระเจ้า ฝ่ายอาโรนกับบรรดาผู้ใหญ่แห่งอิสราเอลมารับประทานเลี้ยงกับพ่อตาของโมเสสเฉพาะพระพักตร์พระเจ้า

¹²Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God. Aaron came with all of the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God.

¹³ต่อมาวันรุ่งขึ้น โมเสสออกนั่งพิจารณาพิพากษาความให้พลไพร่ พลไพร่ก็ยืนห้อมล้อมโมเสสตั้งแต่เช้าจนเย็น

¹³It happened on the next day, that Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood around Moses from the morning to the evening.

¹⁴เมื่อพ่อตาของโมเสสเห็นงานทั้งปวงที่โมเสสกระทำเพื่อพลไพร่เช่นนั้น จึงกล่าวว่า "นี่ท่านใช้วิธีอะไรปฏิบัติกับพลไพร่เล่า เหตุไรท่านจึงนั่งทำงานอยู่แต่ผู้เดียว และพลไพร่ทั้งปวงก็ยืนล้อมท่านตั้งแต่เช้าจนเย็น"

¹⁴When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said, “What is this thing that you do for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand around you from morning to evening?”

¹⁵โมเสสจึงตอบพ่อตาว่า "เพราะพลไพร่มาหาข้าพเจ้า เพื่อขอให้ทูลถามพระเจ้า

¹⁵Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God.

¹⁶เมื่อเขามีการโต้เถียงกันก็มาหาข้าพเจ้า ข้าพเจ้าก็ตัดสินความระหว่างเขากับเพื่อนบ้าน สอนเขาให้รู้จักกฎเกณฑ์ของพระเจ้าและพระราชบัญญัติของพระองค์"

¹⁶When they have a matter, they come to me, and I judge between a man and his neighbor, and I make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.”

¹⁷ฝ่ายพ่อตาของโมเสสจึงกล่าวแก่ท่านว่า "ท่านทำอย่างนี้ไม่ดี

¹⁷Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good.

¹⁸ทั้งท่านและพลไพร่ที่มาหาท่านนั้นจะอ่อนระอาใจ เพราะภาระอันหนักนี้เหลือกำลังของท่าน ท่านไม่สามารถที่จะทำแต่ผู้เดียวได้

¹⁸You will surely wear away, both you, and this people that is with you; for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to perform it yourself alone.

¹⁹ฟังเสียงของเราบ้าง เราจะให้คำแนะนำแก่ท่าน และขอให้พระเจ้าทรงสถิตอยู่กับท่าน ท่านจงเป็นผู้แทนของพลไพร่ต่อพระเจ้า นำความกราบทูลพระเจ้า

¹⁹Listen now to my voice. I will give you counsel, and God be with you. You represent the people before God, and bring the causes to God.

²⁰ท่านจงสั่งสอนเขาให้รู้กฎและพระราชบัญญัติต่างๆ และแสดงให้เขารู้จักทางที่เขาต้องดำเนินชีวิตและสิ่งที่ต้องปฏิบัติ

²⁰You shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and shall show them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do.

²¹ยิ่งกว่านั้น ท่านจงเลือกคนที่สามารถจากพวกพลไพร่ คือคนที่ยำเกรงพระเจ้า ไว้ใจได้และเกลียดสินบน แต่งตั้งคนอย่างนี้ไว้เป็นผู้ปกครองคน พันคนบ้าง ร้อยคนบ้าง ห้าสิบคนบ้าง สิบคนบ้าง

²¹Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God: men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

²²ให้เขาพิพากษาความของพลไพร่อยู่เสมอ ส่วนคดีใหญ่ๆก็ให้เขานำมาแจ้งต่อท่าน แต่คดีเล็กๆน้อยๆให้เขาติดสินเอง การงานของท่านจะเบาลง และพวกเขาจะแบกภาระร่วมกับท่าน

²²Let them judge the people at all times. It shall be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge themselves. So shall it be easier for you, and they shall share the load with you.

²³ถ้าทำดังนี้และพระเจ้าทรงบัญชาแล้ว ท่านก็จะสามารถทนได้ พลไพร่ทั้งปวงนี้ก็จะไปยังที่อาศัยของเขาด้วยความสงบสุข"

²³If you will do this thing, and God commands you so, then you will be able to endure, and all of these people also will go to their place in peace.”

²⁴โมเสสก็ฟังเสียงของพ่อตา และทำตามที่เขาแนะนำทุกประการ

²⁴So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said.

²⁵โมเสสจึงได้เลือกคนที่สามารถจากคนอิสราเอลทั้งปวงตั้งให้เป็นหัวหน้าพลไพร่ เป็นผู้ปกครองคนพันคนบ้าง ร้อยคนบ้าง ห้าสิบคนบ้าง สิบคนบ้าง

²⁵Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

²⁶คนเหล่านั้นพิพากษาความของพลไพร่อยู่เสมอ แต่คดียากๆเขานำไปแจ้งโมเสส ส่วนคดีเล็กๆน้อยๆเขาตัดสินเอง

²⁶They judged the people at all times. They brought the hard causes to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

²⁷โมเสสส่งพ่อตาของตนกลับไป พ่อตาก็กลับไปยังเมืองของเขา

²⁷Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went his way into his own land.
