¹พี่น้องทั้งหลาย ท่านไม่รู้หรือ (ข้าพเจ้าพูดกับคนที่รู้พระราชบัญญัติแล้ว) ว่าพระราชบัญญัตินั้นมีอำนาจเหนือมนุษย์เฉพาะในขณะที่ยังมีชีวิตอยู่เท่านั้น

¹Or don’t you know, brothers The word for “brothers” here and where context allows may also be correctly translated “brothers and sisters” or “siblings.” (for I speak to men who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man for as long as he lives?

²เพราะว่า ผู้หญิงที่สามียังมีชีวิตอยู่นั้นต้องอยู่ใต้พระราชบัญญัติว่าด้วยประเพณีสามีภรรยา แต่ถ้าสามีตาย ผู้หญิงนั้นก็พ้นจากพระราชบัญญัติว่าด้วยประเพณีสามีภรรยา

²For the woman that has a husband is bound by law to the husband while he lives, but if the husband dies, she is discharged from the law of the husband.

³ฉะนั้น ถ้าผู้หญิงนั้นไปแต่งงานกับชายอื่นในเมื่อสามียังมีชีวิตอยู่ นางก็ได้ชื่อว่าเป็นหญิงล่วงประเวณี แต่ถ้าสามีตายแล้ว นางก็พ้นจากพระราชบัญญัตินั้น แม้นางไปแต่งงานกับชายอื่นก็หาผิดประเวณีไม่

³So then if, while the husband lives, she is joined to another man, she would be called an adulteress. But if the husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she is joined to another man.

⁴เช่นนั้นแหละ พี่น้องทั้งหลายของข้าพเจ้า ท่านทั้งหลายได้ตายจากพระราชบัญญัติทางพระกายของพระคริสต์ด้วย เพื่อท่านจะตกเป็นของผู้อื่น คือของพระองค์ผู้ทรงฟื้นขึ้นมาจากความตายแล้ว เพื่อเราทั้งหลายจะได้เกิดผลถวายแด่พระเจ้า

⁴Therefore, my brothers, you also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you would be joined to another, to him who was raised from the dead, that we might bring forth fruit to God.

⁵เพราะว่าเมื่อเราเคยมีชีวิตตามเนื้อหนัง ตัณหาชั่วซึ่งเป็นมาโดยพระราชบัญญัติได้ทำให้อวัยวะของเราเกิดผลนำไปสู่ความตาย

⁵For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were through the law, worked in our members to bring forth fruit to death.

⁶แต่บัดนี้เราได้พ้นจากพระราชบัญญัติ คือได้ตายจากพระราชบัญญัติที่ได้ผูกมัดเราไว้ เพื่อเราจะได้ไม่ประพฤติตามตัวอักษรในประมวลพระราชบัญญัติเก่า แต่จะดำเนินชีวิตใหม่ตามลักษณะจิตวิญญาณ

⁶But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that in which we were held; so that we serve in newness of the spirit, and not in oldness of the letter.

⁷ถ้าเช่นนั้นเราจะว่าอย่างไร ว่าพระราชบัญญัติคือบาปหรือ ขอพระเจ้าอย่ายอมให้เป็นเช่นนั้นเลย แต่ว่าถ้ามิใช่เพราะพระราชบัญญัติแล้ว ข้าพเจ้าก็จะไม่รู้จักบาป เพราะว่าถ้าพระราชบัญญัติมิได้ห้ามว่า "อย่าโลภ" ข้าพเจ้าก็จะไม่รู้ว่าอะไรคือความโลภ

⁷What shall we say then? Is the law sin? May it never be! However, I wouldn’t have known sin, except through the law. For I wouldn’t have known coveting, unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.” Exodus 20:17; Deuteronomy 5:21

⁸แต่ว่าบาปได้ถือเอาพระบัญญัตินั้นเป็นช่อง ทำให้ตัณหาชั่วทุกอย่างเกิดขึ้นในตัวข้าพเจ้า เพราะว่าถ้าไม่มีพระราชบัญญัติ บาปก็ตายเสียแล้ว

⁸But sin, finding occasion through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of coveting. For apart from the law, sin is dead.

⁹เพราะครั้งหนึ่งข้าพเจ้าดำรงชีวิตอยู่โดยปราศจากพระราชบัญญัติ แต่เมื่อมีพระบัญญัติบาปก็กลับมีขึ้นอีกและข้าพเจ้าก็ตาย

⁹I was alive apart from the law once, but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

¹⁰พระบัญญัตินั้นซึ่งมีขึ้นเพื่อให้มีชีวิต ข้าพเจ้าเห็นว่ากลับเป็นเหตุที่ทำให้ถึงความตาย

¹⁰The commandment, which was for life, this I found to be for death;

¹¹เพราะว่าบาปได้ถือเอาพระบัญญัตินั้นเป็นช่องทางล่อลวงข้าพเจ้า และประหารข้าพเจ้าให้ตายด้วยพระบัญญัตินั้น

¹¹for sin, finding occasion through the commandment, deceived me, and through it killed me.

¹²เหตุฉะนั้นพระราชบัญญัติจึงเป็นสิ่งบริสุทธิ์ และพระบัญญัติก็บริสุทธิ์ ยุติธรรม และดี

¹²Therefore the law indeed is holy, and the commandment holy, and righteous, and good.

¹³ถ้าเช่นนั้น สิ่งที่ดีกลับทำให้ข้าพเจ้าต้องตายหรือ ขอพระเจ้าอย่ายอมให้เป็นเช่นนั้นเลย บาปต่างหาก คือบาปซึ่งอาศัยสิ่งที่ดีนั้นทำให้ข้าพเจ้าต้องตาย เพื่อจะให้ปรากฏว่าบาปนั้นเป็นบาปจริงและโดยอาศัยพระบัญญัตินั้น บาปก็ปรากฏว่าชั่วร้ายยิ่งนัก

¹³Did then that which is good become death to me? May it never be! But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, by working death to me through that which is good; that through the commandment sin might become exceeding sinful.

¹⁴เพราะเรารู้ว่าพระราชบัญญัตินั้นเป็นโดยฝ่ายจิตวิญญาณ แต่ว่าข้าพเจ้าเป็นแต่เนื้อหนังถูกขายไว้ให้อยู่ใต้บาป

¹⁴For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am fleshly, sold under sin.

¹⁵ข้าพเจ้าไม่เข้าใจการกระทำของข้าพเจ้าเอง เพราะว่าข้าพเจ้าไม่ทำสิ่งที่ข้าพเจ้าปรารถนาที่จะทำ แต่กลับทำสิ่งที่ข้าพเจ้าเกลียดชังนั้น

¹⁵For I don’t know what I am doing. For I don’t practice what I desire to do; but what I hate, that I do.

¹⁶เหตุฉะนั้นถ้าข้าพเจ้าทำสิ่งที่ข้าพเจ้าไม่ปรารถนาที่จะทำ ข้าพเจ้าก็ยอมรับว่าพระราชบัญญัตินั้นดี

¹⁶But if what I don’t desire, that I do, I consent to the law that it is good.

¹⁷ฉะนั้นข้าพเจ้าจึงมิใช่ผู้กระทำ แต่ว่าบาปซึ่งอยู่ในตัวข้าพเจ้านั่นเองเป็นผู้ทำ

¹⁷So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me.

¹⁸ด้วยว่าข้าพเจ้ารู้ว่าในตัวข้าพเจ้า (คือในเนื้อหนังของข้าพเจ้า) ไม่มีความดีประการใดอยู่เลย เพราะว่าเจตนาดีข้าพเจ้าก็มีอยู่ แต่ซึ่งจะกระทำการดีนั้นข้าพเจ้าหาได้กระทำไม่

¹⁸For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwells no good thing. For desire is present with me, but I don’t find it doing that which is good.

¹⁹ด้วยว่าการดีนั้นซึ่งข้าพเจ้าปรารถนาทำ ข้าพเจ้าไม่ได้กระทำ แต่การชั่วซึ่งข้าพเจ้ามิได้ปรารถนาทำ ข้าพเจ้ายังทำอยู่

¹⁹For the good which I desire, I don’t do; but the evil which I don’t desire, that I practice.

²⁰ถ้าแม้ข้าพเจ้ายังทำสิ่งซึ่งข้าพเจ้าไม่ปรารถนาจะทำ ก็ไม่ใช่ตัวข้าพเจ้าเป็นผู้กระทำ แต่บาปซึ่งอยู่ในตัวข้าพเจ้านั่นเองเป็นผู้กระทำ

²⁰But if what I don’t desire, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me.

²¹ดังนั้นข้าพเจ้าจึงเห็นว่าเป็นกฎอย่างหนึ่ง คือเมื่อใดข้าพเจ้าตั้งใจจะกระทำความดี ความชั่วก็ยังติดอยู่ในตัวข้าพเจ้า

²¹I find then the law, that, to me, while I desire to do good, evil is present.

²²เพราะว่าส่วนลึกในใจของข้าพเจ้านั้น ข้าพเจ้าชื่นชมในพระราชบัญญัติของพระเจ้า

²²For I delight in God’s law after the inward man,

²³แต่ข้าพเจ้าเห็นมีกฎอีกอย่างหนึ่งอยู่ในอวัยวะของข้าพเจ้า ซึ่งต่อสู้กับกฎแห่งจิตใจของข้าพเจ้า และชักนำให้ข้าพเจ้าอยู่ใต้บังคับกฎแห่งบาปซึ่งอยู่ในอวัยวะของข้าพเจ้า

²³but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members.

²⁴โอ ข้าพเจ้าเป็นคนเข็ญใจจริง ใครจะช่วยข้าพเจ้าให้พ้นจากร่างกายแห่งความตายนี้ได้

²⁴What a wretched man I am! Who will deliver me out of the body of this death?

²⁵ข้าพเจ้าขอบพระคุณพระเจ้า โดยทางพระเยซูคริสต์องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าของเรา ฉะนั้นทางด้านจิตใจข้าพเจ้ารับใช้พระราชบัญญัติของพระเจ้า แต่ด้านฝ่ายเนื้อหนังข้าพเจ้ารับใช้กฎแห่งบาป

²⁵I thank God through Jesus Christ, our Lord! So then with the mind, I myself serve God’s law, but with the flesh, the sin’s law.
