1My son, don’t forget my teaching; but let your heart keep my commandments:
1Sine moj, ne zaboravljaj moje pouke, i tvoje srce neka čuva moje zapovijedi,
2for length of days, and years of life, and peace, will they add to you.
2jer će ti produljiti dane i životne godine i podariti spokojstvo.
3Don’t let kindness and truth forsake you. Bind them around your neck. Write them on the tablet of your heart.
3Neka te ne ostavljaju dobrota i vjernost, objesi ih sebi oko vrata, upiši ih na ploču srca svoga.
4So you will find favor, and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
4Tako ćeš steći ugled i uspjeti pred Božjim i ljudskim očima.
5Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding.
5Uzdaj se u Jahvu svim srcem i ne oslanjaj se na vlastiti razbor.
6In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
6Misli na nj na svim svojim putovima i on će ispraviti tvoje staze.
7Don’t be wise in your own eyes. Fear Yahweh, and depart from evil.
7Ne umišljaj da si mudar: boj se Jahve i kloni se zla.
8It will be health to your body, and nourishment to your bones.
8To će biti lijek tvome tijelu i okrepa tvojim kostima.
9Honor Yahweh with your substance, with the first fruits of all your increase:
9Časti Jahvu svojim blagom i prvinama svega svojeg prirasta.
10so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine.
10I tvoje će žitnice biti prepune i tvoje će se kace prelijevati novim vinom.
11My son, don’t despise Yahweh’s discipline, neither be weary of his reproof:
11Sine moj, ne odbacuj Jahvine opomene i nemoj da ti omrzne njegov ukor.
12for whom Yahweh loves, he reproves; even as a father reproves the son in whom he delights.
12Jer koga Jahve ljubi onoga i kori, kao otac sina koga voli.
13Happy is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gets understanding.
13Blago čovjeku koji je stekao mudrost i čovjeku koji je zadobio razboritost.
14For her good profit is better than getting silver, and her return is better than fine gold.
14Jer bolje je steći nju nego steći srebro, i veći je dobitak ona i od zlata.
15She is more precious than rubies. None of the things you can desire are to be compared to her.
15Skupocjenija je od bisera, i što je god tvojih dragocjenosti, s njome se porediti ne mogu;
16Length of days is in her right hand. In her left hand are riches and honor.
16dug joj je život u desnoj ruci, a u lijevoj bogatstvo i čast.
17Her ways are ways of pleasantness. All her paths are peace.
17Njezini su putovi putovi miline i sve su njene staze pune spokoja.
18She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her. Happy is everyone who retains her.
18Životno je drvo onima koji se nje drže i sretan je onaj tko je zadrži.
19By wisdom Yahweh founded the earth. By understanding, he established the heavens.
19Jahve je mudrošću utemeljio zemlju i umom utvrdio nebesa;
20By his knowledge, the depths were broken up, and the skies drop down the dew.
20njegovim su se znanjem otvorili bezdani i oblaci osuli rosom.
21My son, let them not depart from your eyes. Keep sound wisdom and discretion:
21Sine moj, ne gubi to iz očiju, sačuvaj razbor i oprez.
22so they will be life to your soul, and grace for your neck.
22I bit će život tvojoj duši i ures vratu tvome.
23Then you shall walk in your way securely. Your foot won’t stumble.
23Bez straha ćeš tada kročiti svojim putem i noga ti se neće spoticati.
24When you lie down, you will not be afraid. Yes, you will lie down, and your sleep will be sweet.
24Kad legneš, nećeš se plašiti, i kad zaspiš, slatko ćeš snivati.
25Don’t be afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it comes:
25Ne boj se nenadne strahote ni nagle propasti kad stigne bezbožnike.
26for Yahweh will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being taken.
26Jer će ti Jahve biti uzdanje i čuvat će nogu tvoju od zamke.
27Don’t withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do it.
27Ne uskrati dobročinstva potrebitim kad god to možeš učiniti.
28Don’t say to your neighbor, “Go, and come again; tomorrow I will give it to you,” when you have it by you.
28Ne reci svome bližnjemu: "Idi i dođi opet, sjutra ću ti dati", kad možeš već sada.
29Don’t devise evil against your neighbor, since he dwells securely by you.
29Ne kuj zla svome bližnjemu dok on bez straha kod tebe boravi.
30Don’t strive with a man without cause, if he has done you no harm.
30Ne pravdaj se ni s kim bez razloga ako ti nije učinio nikakva zla.
31Don’t envy the man of violence. Choose none of his ways.
31Nemoj zavidjeti nasilniku niti slijediti njegove pute,
32For the perverse is an abomination to Yahweh, but his friendship is with the upright.
32jer su Jahvi mrski pokvarenjaci, a prisan je s pravednima.
33Yahweh’s curse is in the house of the wicked, but he blesses the habitation of the righteous.
33Jahvino je prokletstvo na domu bezbožnika, a blagoslov u stanu pravednika.
34Surely he mocks the mockers, but he gives grace to the humble.
34S podsmjevačima on se podsmijeva, a poniznima dariva milost.
35The wise will inherit glory, but shame will be the promotion of fools.
35Mudri će baštiniti čast, a bezumnici snositi sramotu.
