¹The sons of the prophets said to Elisha, “See now, the place where we dwell before you is too small for us.

¹یک روز انبیاء جوان به الیشع گفتند: «طوریکه می بینی جای سکونت ما در اینجا تنگ است،

²Please let us go to the Jordan, and every man take a beam from there, and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell.” He answered, “Go!”

²بنابران به ما اجازه بده که بکنار دریای اُردن برویم. در آنجا چوب زیاد است می توانیم از آن چوبها خانه ای برای سکونت بسازیم.» او جواب داد: «بسیار خوب، بروید.»

³One said, “Please be pleased to go with your servants.” He answered, “I will go.”

³بعد یکی از انیباء از او خواهش کرد که او هم با آن ها برود. او گفت: «خوب، می روم.»

⁴So he went with them. When they came to the Jordan, they cut down wood.

⁴پس آن ها یکجا براه افتادند. وقتی به اُردن رسیدند، شروع به کار کردند.

⁵But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water. Then he cried, and said, “Alas, my master! For it was borrowed.”

⁵اما هنگامیکه یکی از آن ها چوبی را قطع می کرد، تبرش از دسته جدا شد و در آب افتاد. او فریاد زد: «ای آقا، آن تبر را امانت گرفته بودم.»

⁶The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” He showed him the place. He cut down a stick, threw it in there, and made the iron float.

⁶الیشع پرسید: «در کجا افتاد؟» او آن جائیرا که تبر افتاده بود به او نشان داد آنگاه الیشع یک تکه چوب را برید و در آب انداخت و تبر سر آب آمد.

⁷He said, “Take it.” So he put out his hand and took it.

⁷الیشع به آن مرد گفت: «آنرا از آب بگیر.» آن مرد دست خود دراز کرد و تبر را گرفت.

⁸Now the king of Syria was warring against Israel; and he took counsel with his servants, saying, “My camp will be in such and such a place.”

⁸یکبار وقتی پادشاه ارام با اسرائیل در حال جنگ بود با مأمورین خود مشوره کرد و گفت: «در فلان جا با سپاه خود موضع می گیرم.»

⁹The man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, “Beware that you not pass such a place; for the Syrians are coming down there.”

⁹اما الیشع فوراً به پادشاه اسرائیل خبر داده گفت: «احتیاط کنی که از فلان جا نگذری، زیرا پادشاه ارام به آنجا حمله می کند.»

¹⁰The king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of; and he saved himself there, not once nor twice.

¹⁰پس پادشاه اسرائیل به سپاه خود پیام فرستاد که خبردار باشند. به این ترتیب الیشع چندین بار پادشاه را از خطریکه متوجه او بود باخبر ساخت.

¹¹The heart of the king of Syria was very troubled about this. He called his servants, and said to them, “Won’t you show me which of us is for the king of Israel?”

¹¹پادشاه آرام از این بابت بسیار متأثر شد. بنابران مأمورین خود را جمع کرده از آن ها پرسید: «حالا به من بگوئید که چه کسی از بین ما با پادشاه اسرائیل همدست است؟»

¹²One of his servants said, “No, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.”

¹²یکی از آن ها جواب داد: «ای پادشاه، هیچ کسی از ما طرفدار پادشاه اسرائیل نیست، بلکه الیشع نبی که در اسرائیل است، هر چیزی را حتی اگر در خوابگاه خود هم بگوئی، به پادشاه اسرائیل خبر می دهد.»

¹³He said, “Go and see where he is, that I may send and get him.” It was told him, saying, “Behold, he is in Dothan.”

¹³پادشاه گفت: «برو و هر جائی که است پیدایش کن تا عساکر بفرستم و او را دستگیر کنند.» وقتی به او گفتند که الیشع در دوتان است،

¹⁴Therefore he sent horses, chariots, and a great army there. They came by night, and surrounded the city.

¹⁴پس او یک سپاه بزرگ را مجهز با اسپها و عراده ها به آنجا فرستاد و هنگام شب به آنجا رسیدند، و شهر را محاصره کردند.

¹⁵When the servant of the man of God had risen early, and gone out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was around the city. His servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?”

¹⁵صبح وقت روز دیگر، وقتی خادم الیشع بیرون رفت، دید که سپاه ارام با اسپها و عراده ها شهر را محاصره کرده اند. او پیش الیشع برگشت و گفت: «آه ای آقا، چه چاره کنیم؟»

¹⁶He answered, “Don’t be afraid; for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

¹⁶الیشع جواب داد: «نترس، ما زیادتر از آن ها طرفدار داریم.»

¹⁷Elisha prayed, and said, “Yahweh, please open his eyes, that he may see.” Yahweh opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire around Elisha.

¹⁷آنگاه دعا کرد و گفت: «خداوندا، چشمانش را باز کن تا ببیند.» پس خداوند چشمان خادمش را باز کرد و دید کوههای اطراف الیشع پُر از اسپها و عراده های آتشین بود.

¹⁸When they came down to him, Elisha prayed to Yahweh, and said, “Please strike this people with blindness.” He struck them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.

¹⁸بعد چون ارامیان برای حمله آمدند، الیشع بحضور خداوند دعا کرد گفت: «به دربار تو التجا می کنم که این مردم را از دو چشم کور بسازی.» خداوند دعای او را قبول فرمود و همۀ آن ها کور شدند.

¹⁹Elisha said to them, “This is not the way, neither is this the city. Follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom you seek.” He led them to Samaria.

¹⁹الیشع به آن ها گفت: «شما راه را غلط کرده اید. این شهر آن جائی نیست که شما قصد حملۀ آنرا دارید. بدنبال من بیائید و من شما را پیش آن شخصی که در جستجویش هستید راهنمائی می کنم.» او آن ها را به سامره برد.

²⁰It happened, when they had come into Samaria, that Elisha said, “Yahweh, open the eyes of these men, that they may see.” Yahweh opened their eyes, and they saw; and behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.

²⁰به مجردیکه پای شان به سامره رسید، الیشع دعا کرد و گفت: «خداوندا، چشمان اینها را بینا کن تا ببینند.» خداوند آن ها را بینا ساخت و دیدند که در سامره هستند.

²¹The king of Israel said to Elisha, when he saw them, “My father, shall I strike them? Shall I strike them?”

²¹وقتی پادشاه اسرائیل آن ها را دید از الیشع پرسید: «آقا، آیا آن ها را بکشم؟ آیا آن ها را بکشم؟»

²²He answered, “You shall not strike them. Would you strike those whom you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.”

²²او جواب داد: «نی، اسیران جنگ را نباید کشت، بلکه آن ها را نان و آب بده و دوباره پیش پادشاه شان بفرست.»

²³He prepared great feast for them. When they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. The bands of Syria stopped raiding the land of Israel.

²³پس پادشاه برای آن ها دعوت بزرگی ترتیب داد و بعد از آنکه همه خوردند و نوشیدند، پیش پادشاه خود برگشتند. بنابران ارامیان تا یک زمانی به کشور اسرائیل حمله نکردند.

²⁴It happened after this, that Benhadad king of Syria gathered all his army, and went up and besieged Samaria.

²⁴اما بعد از مدتی بِنهَدَد، پادشاه ارام سپاه خود را آماده و مجهز ساخت و برای جنگ به سامره لشکرکشی نمود و آنرا محاصره کرد.

²⁵There was a great famine in Samaria. Behold, they besieged it, until a donkey’s head was sold for eighty pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a kab of dove’s dung for five pieces of silver.

²⁵در نتیجۀ محاصره قحطی شدیدی در سامره پیدا شد، بحدیکه قیمت یک کلۀ خر به هشتاد سکۀ نقره و قیمت دو صد گرام سنگدان کبوتر به پنج سکۀ نقره رسیده بود.

²⁶As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried to him, saying, “Help, my lord, O king!”

²⁶یک روز هنگامی که پادشاه اسرائیل بالای دیوار شهر قدم می زد، یک زن فریاد زد: «ای پادشاه به من کمک کن!»

²⁷He said, “If Yahweh doesn’t help you, from where could I help you? From of the threshing floor, or from the winepress?”

²⁷او جواب داد: «از خداوند کمک بطلب. از دست من چیزی پوره نیست. نه گندم و نه شراب دارم که بتو بدهم.»

²⁸The king said to her, “What ails you?” She answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.’

²⁸بعد از زن پرسید: «چه شکایت داری؟» او جواب داد: «این زن پیشنهاد کرد و گفت: «تو امروز پسرت را بیاور که بخوریم، و من فردا پسر خود را می آورم و هر دوی ما او را می خوریم.»

²⁹So we boiled my son, and ate him: and I said to her on the next day, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him;’ and she has hidden her son.”

²⁹من قبول کردم. پسرم را پُختیم و خوردیم. فردای آن وقتی به او گفتم که پسرش را بیاورد که بخوریم، او پسر خود را پنهان کرد.»

³⁰It happened, when the king heard the words of the woman, that he tore his clothes (now he was passing by on the wall); and the people looked, and behold, he had sackcloth underneath on his flesh.

³⁰وقتی پادشاه داستان آن زن را شنید لباس خود را پاره کرد. (چون پادشاه بر سر دیوار بود، مردم دیدند که او زیر لباس خود کالای نمدی پوشیده بود.)

³¹Then he said, “God do so to me, and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stay on him this day.”

³¹پادشاه گفت: «اگر امروز سر الیشع را از تنش جدا نکنم، خداوند مرا به روز بد گرفتار کند.»

³²But Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. Then the king sent a man from before him; but before the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, “Do you see how this son of a murderer has sent to take away my head? Behold, when the messenger comes, shut the door, and hold the door shut against him. Isn’t the sound of his master’s feet behind him?”

³²آنگاه یک نفر را برای دستگیری الیشع فرستاد. در عین حال الیشع با مو سفیدان قوم در خانۀ خود نشسته بود. پیش از آنکه قاصد شاه برسد، الیشع به آن ها گفت: «آیا می دانید که این قاتل، یک نفر را برای کشتن من فرستاده است؟ وقتی قاصد شاه آمد شما باید دروازه را برویش ببندید و نگذارید که داخل شود، زیرا آقایش هم بدنبال او می آید.»هنوز حرف او تمام نشده بود که قاصد و بدنبال او خود پادشاه رسید. پادشاه گفت: «چون این مصیبت را خداوند خودش بر سر ما آورده است، پس حاجت نیست که از او انتظار کمک را داشته باشیم.»

³³While he was still talking with them, behold, the messenger came down to him. Then he said, “Behold, this evil is from Yahweh. Why should I wait for Yahweh any longer?”

³³هنوز حرف او تمام نشده بود که قاصد و بدنبال او خود پادشاه رسید. پادشاه گفت: «چون این مصیبت را خداوند خودش بر سر ما آورده است، پس حاجت نیست که از او انتظار کمک را داشته باشیم.»
