¹Elisha said, “Hear the word of Yahweh. Thus says Yahweh, ‘Tomorrow about this time a measure of fine flour will be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria.’”

¹الیشع جواب داد: «خداوند می فرماید که فردا در همین ساعت یک سیر آرد تَرمیده یا دو سیر آرد جَو به قیمت یک سکۀ نقره به دروازۀ شهر سامره فروخته می شود.»

²Then the captain on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said, “Behold, if Yahweh made windows in heaven, could this thing be?” He said, “Behold, you shall see it with your eyes, but shall not eat of it.”

²افسری که دست پادشاه را گرفته بود به الیشع گفت: «اگر خداوند از آسمان غله هم بفرستد این کار امکان ندارد.» اما الیشع جواب داد: «تو با چشمانت خواهی دید اما آنرا بلب نخواهی زد.»

³Now there were four leprous men at the entrance of the gate. They said one to another, “Why do we sit here until we die?

³در پیش دروازۀ شهر چهار مرد جذامی نشسته بودند. به یکدیگر خود گفتند: «چرا اینجا به انتظار مرگ بنشینیم؟

⁴If we say, ‘We will enter into the city,’ then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there. If we sit still here, we also die. Now therefore come, and let us surrender to the army of the Syrians. If they save us alive, we will live; and if they kill us, we will only die.”

⁴چه در اینجا بمانیم یا بداخل شهر برویم، در هر صورت از گرسنگی می میریم، پس بیائید که به اردوی ارامیان برویم. اگر ما را زنده گذاشتند، از آن چه بهتر و اگر کشتند باز هم فرقی نمی کند، زیرا اگر آن ها ما را نکشند البته از گرسنگی خواهیم مرد.»

⁵They rose up in the twilight, to go to the camp of the Syrians. When they had come to the outermost part of the camp of the Syrians, behold, there was no man there.

⁵پس هنگام شام بسوی اردوی ارامیان براه افتادند. وقتی به نزدیک اردو رسیدند هیچ کسی را ندیدند.

⁶For the Lord The word translated “Lord” is “Adonai.” had made the army of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great army: and they said one to another, Behold, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come on us.

⁶زیرا خداوند کاری کرد که ارامیان صدای چرخهای عراده ها و آواز سُم اسپها و غریو لشکر بزرگی را شنیدند، لهذا به یکدیگر خود گفتند: «پادشاه اسرائیل، پادشاهان حِتیان و مصر را اجیر کرده است تا با ما بجنگند.»

⁷Therefore they arose and fled in the twilight, and left their tents, and their horses, and their donkeys, even the camp as it was, and fled for their life.

⁷بنابران در وقت شام همۀ آن ها فرار کردند و خیمه، اسپ، خر و اردوگاه خود را با همه چیزهای آن بجا گذاشتند و از ترس جان گریختند.

⁸When these lepers came to the outermost part of the camp, they went into one tent, and ate and drink, and carried there silver, and gold, and clothing, and went and hid it. Then they came back, and entered into another tent, and carried there also, and went and hid it.

⁸وقتی آن مردان جذامی به اردوگاه رسیدند، در یک خیمه داخل شدند. خوردند و نوشیدند و نقره، طلا و لباسی را هم که یافتند با خود برده پنهان کردند. باز دوباره آمدند و به خیمۀ دیگر داخل شدند و هر چیزی را که به دست آوردند با خود بردند و آن ها را هم پنهان کردند.

⁹Then they said one to another, “We aren’t doing right. This day is a day of good news, and we keep silent. If we wait until the morning light, punishment will overtake us. Now therefore come, let us go and tell the king’s household.”

⁹بعد به یکدیگر گفتند: «این کاری که ما می کنیم درست نیست. امروز روز خوشی و خوشخبری است. اگر خاموش بنشینیم و تا صبح صبر کنیم گناهکار و مجرم شمرده می شویم. پس باید برویم و به مأمورین قصر شاهی خبر بدهیم.»

¹⁰So they came and called to the porter of the city; and they told them, saying, “We came to the camp of the Syrians, and, behold, there was no man there, neither voice of man, but the horses tied, and the donkeys tied, and the tents as they were.”

¹⁰آن ها رفتند و پهره داران دروازۀ شهر را صدا کردند و به آن ها گفتند: «ما به اردوگاه ارامیان رفتیم، اما در آنجا نه کسی را دیدیم و نه آوازی را شنیدیم. اسپها و خرهای شان بسته بودند و خیمه های آن ها همه همانطوریکه افراشته بودند قرار دارند.»

¹¹He called the porters; and they told it to the king’s household within.

¹¹پهره داران به کارکنان قصر سلطنتی خبر دادند.

¹²The king arose in the night, and said to his servants, “I will now show you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we are hungry. Therefore are they gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the field, saying, ‘When they come out of the city, we shall take them alive, and get into the city.’”

¹²پادشاه همان شب رفت و به مأمورین خود گفت: «من می دانم که ارامیان چه نقشه ای دارند. آن ها از موضوع قحطی خبر دارند، بنابران از اردوگاه خود رفته و در دشت خود را پنهان کرده اند و قصد دارند که وقتی ما از شهر بیرون شویم ما را زنده دستگیر کنند و بعد بداخل شهر بروند.»

¹³One of his servants answered, “Please let some take five of the horses that remain, which are left in the city. Behold, they are like all the multitude of Israel who are left in it. Behold, they are like all the multitude of Israel who are consumed. Let us send and see.”

¹³یکی از مأمورین گفت: «ما باید چند نفر را با پنج رأس اسپهای که باقی مانده اند بفرستیم و معلوم کنیم که وضع آنجا چطور است. اگر خطری برای آن ها پیش آید و کشته شوند چندان فرقی نمی کند، زیرا اگر در اینجا هم بمانند همراه ما می میرند.»

¹⁴They took therefore two chariots with horses; and the king sent after the army of the Syrians, saying, “Go and see.”

¹⁴آنگاه چند نفر را انتخاب کردند و پادشاه آن ها را در دو عراده سوار کرد و هدایت داد که بروند و معلوم کنند که لشکر ارامیان کجا رفته اند.

¹⁵They went after them to the Jordan; and behold, all the way was full of garments and vessels, which the Syrians had cast away in their haste. The messengers returned, and told the king.

¹⁵آن ها تا دریای اُردن رفتند و تمام راه پُر از البسه و تجهیزات نظامی ارامیان بود که آن ها را از روی عجله بروی سرک انداخته و فرار کرده بودند. پس قاصدان برگشتند و مشاهدات خود را به شاه گزارش دادند.

¹⁶The people went out, and plundered the camp of the Syrians. So a measure of fine flour was sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, according to the word of Yahweh.

¹⁶آنگاه همۀ مردم سامره بیرون رفتند و به تاراج اردوگاه ارامیان شروع کردند، و قراریکه خداوند فرموده بود قیمت یک سیر آرد اعلی و دو سیر آرد جَو به یک سکۀ نقره رسید.

¹⁷The king appointed the captain on whose hand he leaned to be in charge of the gate: and the people trod on him in the gate, and he died as the man of God had said, who spoke when the king came down to him.

¹⁷پادشاه افسری را که معاون او بود مأمور ساخت تا از دروازۀ شهر مراقبت کند، ولی او همانطوریکه الیشع، در وقتیکه پادشاه برای دستگیری اش آمد، پیشگوئی کرده بود بزیر پاهای مردم لگدمال شد و مُرد.

¹⁸It happened, as the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, “Two measures of barley for a shekel, and a measure of fine flour for a shekel, shall be tomorrow about this time in the gate of Samaria”;

¹⁸زیرا الیشع به پادشاه گفته بود که به دروازۀ سامره یک سیر آرد اعلی یا دو سیر آرد جَو به قیمت یک سکۀ نقره بفروش می رسد.

¹⁹and that captain answered the man of God, and said, “Now, behold, if Yahweh should make windows in heaven, might such a thing be?” and he said, “Behold, you shall see it with your eyes, but shall not eat of it.”

¹⁹و آن افسر جواب داد: «اگر خداوند از آسمان غله هم بر زمین بفرستد این کار امکان ندارد.» الیشع در جوابش گفت: «تو با چشمانت خواهی دید، اما از آن نخواهی خورد.»آن پیشگوئی واقعاً عملی شد و او بزیر پاهای مردم جان داد.
