1When you go forth to battle against your enemies, and see horses, chariots, and a people more than you, you shall not be afraid of them; for Yahweh your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
1وقتی به جنگ می روید و لشکر دشمن را با اسپها و عراده های جنگی آن ها بزرگتر و نیرومندتر از خود می بینید نترسید، زیرا خداوند، خدای تان که شما را از مصر بیرون آورد همراه شما می باشد.
2It shall be, when you draw near to the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak to the people,
2پیش از آنکه به جنگ بروید، کاهنی در برابر سپاه بایستد
3and shall tell them, “Hear, Israel, you draw near this day to battle against your enemies: don’t let your heart faint; don’t be afraid, nor tremble, neither be scared of them;
3به آن ها بگوید: «ای مردان اسرائیل، بشنوید! امروز شما برای جنگ در مقابل دشمن می روید. کم دل نشوید، نترسید، وحشت نکنید و باجرأت باشید،
4for Yahweh your God is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.”
4زیرا خداوند، خدای تان با شما می رود، با دشمن می جنگد و شما را پیروز می سازد.»
5The officers shall speak to the people, saying, “What man is there who has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.
5بعد سرکردگان قوم، مردان خود را مخاطب قرار داده بگوید: «هر کسی که خانۀ نو ساخته و هنوز آن را تقدیس نکرده باشد، به خانۀ خود برگردد، مبادا در جنگ کشته شود و کس دیگری آن را تقدیس کند.
6What man is there who has planted a vineyard, and has not used its fruit? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use its fruit.
6هرگاه کسی تاکستانی غرس کرده و هنوز میوۀ آن را نخورده باشد، بخانۀ خود برگردد، مبادا در جنگ بمیرد و کس دیگری از میوۀ آن استفاده کند.
7What man is there who has pledged to be married a wife, and has not taken her? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.”
7اگر کسی با دختری نامزد شده و هنوز عروسی نکرده باشد، باید به خانۀ خود برگردد با آن دختر عروسی کند، مبادا در جنگ کشته شود و آن دختر زن شخص دیگری شود.»
8The officers shall speak further to the people, and they shall say, “What man is there who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go and return to his house, lest his brother’s heart melt as his heart.”
8بعد سرکردگان سپاه بگویند: «آیا کسی هست که از جنگ بترسد؟ چنین شخصی باید به خانۀ خود برگردد، مبادا روحیۀ دیگران را ضعیف سازد.»
9It shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking to the people, that they shall appoint captains of armies at the head of the people.
9وقتی گفتار سرکردگان قوم بپایان رسید، آنگاه فرماندهانی را برای سپاه تعیین کنند.
10When you draw near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace to it.
10چون به شهری که با آن می جنگید نزدیک می شوید، اولتر به مردم آن فرصت بدهید که تسلیم شوند.
11It shall be, if it makes you answer of peace, and opens to you, then it shall be, that all the people who are found therein shall become tributary to you, and shall serve you.
11هرگاه پیشنهاد شما را قبول کردند و تسلیم شدند، آنوقت به شهر داخل شوید و مردم آن را اسیر بگیرید تا خدمت شما را بکنند.
12If it will make no peace with you, but will make war against you, then you shall besiege it:
12اما اگر تسلیم نشدند و خواستند که بجنگند، پس شما آن شهر را محاصره کنید.
13and when Yahweh your God delivers it into your hand, you shall strike every male of it with the edge of the sword:
13و وقتی که خداوند، خدای تان آن شهر را به شما داد، همه مردان آنجا را به قتل برسانید.
14but the women, and the little ones, and the livestock, and all that is in the city, even all its spoil, you shall take for a prey to yourself; and you shall eat the spoil of your enemies, which Yahweh your God has given you.
14اما زنان، اطفال، گله و رمه و هر چیز دیگری را که در آن شهر باشد، برای خود نگهدارید. تمام غنایمی را که از دشمن به دست می آورید به شما تعلق خواهند داشت، زیرا خداوند، خدای تان به شما داده است.
15Thus you shall do to all the cities which are very far off from you, which are not of the cities of these nations.
15به همین ترتیب با تمام شهرهائی که از سرزمین موعود دور هستند، رفتار کنید.
16But of the cities of these peoples, that Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes;
16اما در شهرهای آن سرزمینی که خداوند، خدای تان به شما می دهد هیچ زنده جانی را زنده نگذارید.
17but you shall utterly destroy them: the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; as Yahweh your God has commanded you;
17همه را از بین ببرید ـ حِتیان، اموریان، کنعانیان، فرزیان، حویان و یبوسیان را همانطوریکه خداوند، خدای تان امر فرموده است،
18that they not teach you to do after all their abominations, which they have done to their gods; so would you sin against Yahweh your God.
18تا شما از کارهای زشت آن ها که برای خدایان خود می کنند، پیروی نکنید و در برابر خداوند، خدای تان مرتکب گناه نشوید.
19When you shall besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an axe against them; for you may eat of them, and you shall not cut them down; for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged of you?
19وقتی شهری برای یک مدت طولانی در محاصرۀ تان می باشد، درختان میوه دار آنجا را قطع نکنید. شما می توانید از میوۀ آن ها بخورید، اما درختان را از بین نبرید، زیرا درختان دشمن شما نیستند.فقط درختانی را که می دانید میوه بار نمی آورند، قطع کنید و از چوب آن ها برای ساختن سنگر کار بگیرید.
20Only the trees of which you know that they are not trees for food, you shall destroy and cut them down; and you shall build bulwarks against the city that makes war with you, until it fall.
