¹Now Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, how that Yahweh had brought Israel out of Egypt.

¹یترون، خسر موسی که کاهن مدیان بود، شنید که خدا چه کارهائی برای موسی و قوم اسرائیل انجام داده است و چگونه آن ها را از سرزمین مصر بیرون آورد.

²Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, received Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her away,

²پس یترون، صَفوره زن موسی را با دو پسرش جرشوم و الیعزر که در خانۀ او بودند، با خود گرفته پیش موسی رفت. (موسی گفته بود: «من در این سرزمین بیگانه هستم.» پس اسم یک پسر خود را جرشوم (یعنی بیگانه) گذاشت.

³and her two sons. The name of one son was Gershom, “Gershom” sounds like the Hebrew for “an alien there.” for Moses said, “I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land”.

³بعد از آن گفته بود: «خدای پدرم به من کمک کرد و نگذاشت به دست فرعون کشته شوم.» بنابراین پسر دوم خود را اَلِیعازار (یعنی خدا مددگار من است) نامید.)

⁴The name of the other was Eliezer, Eliezer means “God is my helper.” for he said, “My father’s God was my help and delivered me from Pharaoh’s sword.”

⁴هنگامی که موسی در دامنۀ کوه مقدس خیمه زده بود، یترون با زن و دو پسر موسی به بیابان رسید.

⁵Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses into the wilderness where he was encamped, at the Mountain of God.

⁵یترون برای موسی پیغام فرستاد که به دیدنش آمده است.

⁶He said to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, have come to you with your wife, and her two sons with her.”

⁶موسی به استقبال او رفت و در مقابل او تعظیم کرد و روی او را بوسید. آن ها بعد از احوالپرسی به خیمۀ موسی رفتند.

⁷Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and bowed and kissed him. They asked each other of their welfare, and they came into the tent.

⁷موسی برای یترون تعریف کرد که خدا برای نجات بنی اسرائیل بر سر فرعون و اهالی مصر چه بلاهائی آورد. همچنین تعریف کرد که در راه سفر چه تکالیفی را متحمل شدند و خداوند چگونه آن ها را از خطرات و مشکلات نجات داد.

⁸Moses told his father-in-law all that Yahweh had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardships that had come on them on the way, and how Yahweh delivered them.

⁸یترون وقتی ماجرا را شنید خوشحال شد

⁹Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which Yahweh had done to Israel, in that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians.

⁹و گفت: «سپاس بر خداوندی که شما را از دست فرعون و مردم مصر رهائی بخشید. از خداوند شکر گزارم که قوم برگزیدۀ خود را از غلامی آزاد کرد.

¹⁰Jethro said, “Blessed be Yahweh, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

¹⁰حالا می دانم که خداوند از همه خدایان بزرگتر است. زیرا او بنی اسرائیل را از ظلم و ستم مردم مصر نجات داد.»

¹¹Now I know that Yahweh is greater than all gods because of the thing in which they dealt arrogantly against them.”

¹¹بعد یترون قربانی سوختنی و قربانی های دیگر به خدا تقدیم کرد و هارون و تمام بزرگان قوم اسرائیل آمدند تا به اتفاق یترون، خسر موسی، در حضور خداوند با هم غذا بخورند.

¹²Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God. Aaron came with all of the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God.

¹²روز بعد موسی به جایگاه خود نشست و برای رسیدگی به شکایات مردم از صبح تا شام مشغول شد.

¹³It happened on the next day, that Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood around Moses from the morning to the evening.

¹³وقتی یترون دید که موسی چقدر از وقت خود را صرف شنیدن شکایات مردم می کند، از او پرسید: «این چه کاریست که تو می کنی؟ چرا همۀ این کارها را به تنهائی انجام می دهی و مردم را از صبح تا شب سرِ پا نگاه می داری تا با تو مشوره کنند؟»

¹⁴When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said, “What is this thing that you do for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand around you from morning to evening?”

¹⁴موسی در جواب گفت: «من مجبورم این کار را بکنم، زیرا مردم پیش من می آیند تا برای حل مشکلات خود از خدا مسئلت کنند.

¹⁵Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God.

¹⁵هر وقت دو نفر با هم اختلاف داشته باشند، نزد من می آیند و من فیصله می کنم که حق با کدام یکی است و احکام و اوامر خدا را برای آن ها شرح می دهم.»

¹⁶When they have a matter, they come to me, and I judge between a man and his neighbor, and I make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.”

¹⁶یترون گفت: «تو کار درستی نمی کنی!

¹⁷Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good.

¹⁷تو با این کار هم خودت و هم مردم را خسته می سازی، زیرا این کار به تنهائی برای تو خیلی دشوار است.

¹⁸You will surely wear away, both you, and this people that is with you; for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to perform it yourself alone.

¹⁸حالا به نصیحت من گوش بده و خدا با تو خواهد بود. البته کار درستی است که به نمایندگی قومت اختلافات آن ها را به حضور خدا عرض می کنی.

¹⁹Listen now to my voice. I will give you counsel, and God be with you. You represent the people before God, and bring the causes to God.

¹⁹تو باید اوامر خدا را به آن ها تعلیم بدهی و برای آن ها توضیح کنی که زندگی و رفتار آن ها چگونه باشد.

²⁰You shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and shall show them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do.

²⁰اما در ضمن، تو باید مردان لایق و کاردان را که خداترس و صادق باشند و رشوه نگیرند از میان مردم انتخاب کنی تا داور گروه های هزار نفری، صد نفری، پنجاه نفری و ده نفری باشند.

²¹Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God: men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

²¹آن ها را به عنوان داوران دائمی بگمار و آن ها فقط کارهای مشکل و پیچیده را نزد تو بیاورند، ولی مسائل کوچک را خود شان حل و فصل کنند. آن ها با این کار به تو کمک می کنند و بار تو سبکتر و کار تو آسانتر می شود.

²²Let them judge the people at all times. It shall be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge themselves. So shall it be easier for you, and they shall share the load with you.

²²اگر این کار را طبق خواست خدا انجام دهی، هم خودت زیاد خسته نمی شوی و هم اختلافات مردم زودتر حل می شود و می توانند با خاطر جمع به خانه های خود بروند.»

²³If you will do this thing, and God commands you so, then you will be able to endure, and all of these people also will go to their place in peace.”

²³موسی نصیحت خسر خود، یترون را پذیرفت

²⁴So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said.

²⁴و مردان لایقی را از بین بنی اسرائیل انتخاب کرد و به عنوان داور بر گروه های هزار نفری، صد نفری، پنجاه نفری و ده نفری گماشت.

²⁵Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

²⁵آن ها بحیث داوران دائمی به مشکلات و اختلافات مردم رسیدگی می کردند. مردم را برای حل کارهای مشکل و پیچیده نزد موسی می فرستادند، ولی مسائل ساده و کوچک را خود شان حل و فصل می کردند.بعد از آن موسی با خسر خود، یترون خداحافظی کرد و یترون به وطن خود برگشت.

²⁶They judged the people at all times. They brought the hard causes to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

²⁶بعد از آن موسی با خسر خود، یترون خداحافظی کرد و یترون به وطن خود برگشت.

²⁷Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went his way into his own land.
