1Now the word of Yahweh “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “LORD” (all caps) in other translations. came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
1یک روز کلام خداوند بر یونس، پسر اَمِتای نازل شد و به او فرمود:
2“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.”
2«به شهر بزرگ نینوا برو و با آواز بلند بگو که خبر ظلم و شرارت مردم آن به گوش من رسیده است.»
3But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh.
3اما یونس خواست که از حضور خداوند فرار کند. پس به یافا رفت و در آنجا یک کشتی را دید که عازم ترشیش بود. یونس کرایۀ خود را داد و با سایر مسافرین سوار شد تا به ترشیش برود و از حضور خداوند دور شود.
4But Yahweh sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was likely to break up.
4اما خداوند طوفان سختی را بر بحر فرستاد و طوفان بقدری شدید بود که نزدیک بود کشتی غرق شود.
5Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship, and he was laying down, and was fast asleep.
5کشتیبانان به وحشت افتادند و همه پیش خدای خود زاری کرده کمک می خواستند. بعد برای اینکه کشتی را سبک کنند، بار های کشتی را در بحر انداختند. در این وقت یونس در داخل کشتی دراز کشیده و بخواب سنگینی فرورفته بود.
6So the shipmaster came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God or, gods ! Maybe your God or, gods will notice us, so that we won’t perish.”
6کپتان کشتی آمد و به او گفت: «چرا خوابیده ای؟ بر خیز و پیش خدای خود دعا کن شاید بر ما رحم کند و ما را از غرق شدن نجات بدهد.»
7They all said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for this evil that is on us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.
7کشتیبانان به یکدیگر خود گفتند: «قرعه بیاندازیم و ببینیم که بخاطر چه کسی به این بلا دچار شده ایم.» آن ها قرعه انداختند و قرعه بنام یونس افتاد.
8Then they asked him, “Tell us, please, for whose cause this evil is on us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? Of what people are you?”
8آن ها به یونس گفتند: «به ما بگو که چرا این بلا بر سر ما آمده است؟ شغل تو چیست و از کجا آمده ای و از کدام مردم هستی؟»
9He said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim.” of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.”
9او جواب داد: «من عبرانی هستم و خداوند، خدای آسمان را می پرستم که بحر و خشکه را آفریده است.»
10Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “What is this that you have done?” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Yahweh, because he had told them.
10وقتی آن ها پی بردند که او از حضور خداوند فرار کرده است، زیادتر ترسیدند و به او گفتند: «تو کار بسیار بدی کرده ای.»
11Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?” For the sea grew more and more stormy.
11طوفان هر لحظه شدیدتر می شد، بنابران کشتیبانان به او گقتند: «با تو چه کنیم که بحر آرام شود؟»
12He said to them, “Take me up, and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will be calm for you; for I know that because of me this great storm is on you.”
12یونس گفت: «مرا بردارید و در بحر بیندازید تا بحر آرام گردد، زیرا می دانم گناه من است که شما گرفتار این طوفان شده اید.»
13Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them.
13اما کشتیبانان با تمام قدرت خود می کوشیدند که کشتی را به خشکه برسانند، ولی طوفان هر لحظه شدیدتر می شد و آن ها چاره ای کرده نمی توانستند.
14Therefore they cried to Yahweh, and said, “We beg you, Yahweh, we beg you, don’t let us die for this man’s life, and don’t lay on us innocent blood; for you, Yahweh, have done as it pleased you.”
14پس پیش خداوند دعا و زاری کرده گفتند: «خداوند، بخاطر گناه این شخص ما را هلاک مکن و ما را مسئول مرگ او نساز، چون ما گناهی نداریم. تو البته به منظور خاصی این طوفان را فرستادی.»
15So they took up Jonah, and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased its raging.
15آنگاه یونس را برداشتند و در بحر انداختند و در همان لحظه بحر آرام شد.
16Then the men feared Yahweh exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh, and made vows.
16کشتیبانان بخاطر این واقعه زیادتر از خداوند ترسیدند و برای او قربانی ها و نذرها تقدیم کردند.بفرمان خداوند یک ماهی بزرگ یونس را بلعید و یونس مدت سه شبانه روز در شکم ماهی بود.
17Yahweh prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
