¹Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a prostitute: and Gilead became the father of Jephthah.

¹یِفتاح جِلعادی یک جنگجوی دلاور، اما پسر یک فاحشه بود. پدرش جِلعاد نام داشت.

²Gilead’s wife bore him sons; and when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said to him, “You shall not inherit in our father’s house; for you are the son of another woman.”

²جِلعاد از زن اصلی خود دارای پسران دیگر هم بود. و چون پسرانش بزرگ شدند، یِفتاح را از پیش خود رانده، به او گفتند: «تو در میراث پدر ما حقی نداری، زیرا تو پسر یک زن دیگر هستی.»

³Then Jephthah fled from his brothers, and lived in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him.

³بنابران، یِفتاح از پیش برادران خود فرار کرد و در سرزمین طوب ساکن شد. در آنجا یک تعداد اشخاص هرزه و بیکاره را دَور خود جمع کرده سردستۀ آن ها شد.

⁴It happened after a while, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

⁴بعد از مدتی، جنگ بین عمونیان و اسرائیل شروع شد.

⁵It was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah out of the land of Tob;

⁵سرکردگان جِلعاد برای آوردن یِفتاح به طوب رفتند

⁶and they said to Jephthah, “Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.”

⁶و به او گفتند: «بیا و سپاه ما را رهبری کن تا بکمک تو بتوانیم با عمونیان جنگ کنیم.»

⁷Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Didn’t you hate me, and drive me out of my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?”

⁷یِفتاح به آن ها جواب داد: «شما از روی دشمنی، مرا از خانۀ پدرم بیرون راندید و حالا چون بیچاره شده اید، چرا پیش من آمده اید؟»

⁸The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Therefore we have turned again to you now, that you may go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon; and you shall be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

⁸سرکردگان جِلعاد گفتند: «بخاطریکه ما به تو احتیاج داریم که با ما به جنگ عمونیان بروی و رهبر و پیشوای تمام سرزمین جِلعاد باشی.»

⁹Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Yahweh deliver them before me, shall I be your head?”

⁹یِفتاح گفت: «راستی؟ آیا خیال می کنید که من حرفهای شما را باور می کنم؟»

¹⁰The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Yahweh shall be witness between us; surely according to your word so will we do.”

¹⁰آن ها گفتند: «ما قسم می خوریم و خدا شاهد ما باشد که دروغ نمی گوئیم.»

¹¹Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them: and Jephthah spoke all his words before Yahweh in Mizpah.

¹¹پس یِفتاح با آن ها به جلعاد رفت و مردم آنجا او را بعنوان رهبر و پیشوای خود انتخاب نمودند و در مِصفه هر دو جانب پیمان خود را در حضور خداوند تجدید کردند.

¹²Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, “What have you to do with me, that you have come to me to fight against my land?”

¹²بعد یِفتاح هیئتی را پیش پادشاه عمونیان با این پیام فرستاد: «با ما چه دشمنی داری که بجنگ ما آمده ای؟»

¹³The king of the children of Ammon answered to the messengers of Jephthah, “Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and to the Jordan: now therefore restore that territory again peaceably.”

¹³پادشاه عمونیان در جواب گفت: «بخاطریکه وقتی قوم اسرائیل از مصر آمدند، مُلک ما را از اَرنُون تا به یبوق و اُردن گرفتند. و حالا می خواهیم که مُلک ما را به آرامی برای ما مسترد کنید.»

¹⁴Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the children of Ammon;

¹⁴یِفتاح باز چند نفر را پیش پادشاه عمونیان فرستاد

¹⁵and he said to him, “Thus says Jephthah: Israel didn’t take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon,

¹⁵که به او بگوید: «اسرائیل زمین موآب و عمونیان را بزور نگرفته است،

¹⁶but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea or, Sea of Reeds , and came to Kadesh;

¹⁶بلکه وقتی از مصر خارج شدند از راه بیابان به بحیرۀ احمر رسیدند و از آن عبور کرده به قادِش آمدند.

¹⁷then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let me pass through your land;’ but the king of Edom didn’t listen. In the same way, he sent to the king of Moab; but he would not: and Israel stayed in Kadesh.

¹⁷بعد مردم اسرائیل از پادشاه ادوم خواهش کرده گفتند: «به ما اجازۀ عبور از کشورت را بده.» اما او خواهش شان را قبول نکرد. از پادشاه موآب هم همین خواهش را کردند و او هم به آن ها جواب رَد داد، بنابران، مردم اسرائیل در قادِش ماندند.

¹⁸Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they didn’t come within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.

¹⁸بعد از راه بیابان رفتند و کشورهای ادوم و موآب را دَور زده به سمت شرقی موآب رسیدند و در قسمت دیگر ارنون اردو زدند. گرچه ارنون سرحد موآب بود، اما مردم اسرائیل هیچگاهی سعی نکردند از سرحد گذشته داخل خاک موآب شوند.

¹⁹Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land to my place.’

¹⁹بعد مردم اسرائیل به سیحون، پادشاه اموریان و پادشاه حِشبون پیام فرستاده از آن ها خواهش کردند که از راه کشور شان به وطن خود بروند.

²⁰But Sihon didn’t trust Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

²⁰ولی سیحون به مردم اسرائیل اعتماد نکرد و نه تنها به آن ها اجازۀ عبور نداد بلکه تمام سپاه خود را جمع کرده در یاهز اردو زد و با اسرائیل جنگید.

²¹Yahweh, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they struck them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

²¹و خداوند، خدای اسرائیل سیحون و تمام مردم او را به دست اسرائیل تسلیم کرد. به این ترتیب، اسرائیل آن ها را شکست داد و تمام سرزمین اموریان را تصرف نمودند.

²²They possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even to the Jordan.

²²همچنان کشور اموریان از ارنون تا به یبوق و از بیابان تا اُردن به تصرف اسرائیل درآمد.

²³So now Yahweh, the God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and should you possess them?

²³حالا می بینید که خداوند مُلک اموریان را گرفت و به اسرائیل داد. پس چرا ما آنرا به تو مسترد کنیم؟

²⁴Won’t you possess that which Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whoever Yahweh our God has dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.

²⁴شما آنچه را که خدای تان، کموش به شما داده است، نگهدارید و هرچه را هم که خداوند، خدای ما به ما بخشیده است، برای خود نگاه می داریم.

²⁵Now are you anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?

²⁵آیا تو از بالاق پسر صفور، پادشاه موآب بهتر هستی؟ او هرگز خیال بدی در مقابل اسرائیل نداشته و نه گاهی با اسرائیل جنگیده است.

²⁶While Israel lived in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; why didn’t you recover them within that time?

²⁶مردم اسرائیل در این سرزمین مدت سه صد سال زندگی کرده اند. و در کشورهای حِشبون، عروعیر و دهات اطراف آن ها و تا اَرنُون پراگنده بوده اند. چرا در این قدر مدت دعوای ملکیت آنرا نکردید؟

²⁷I therefore have not sinned against you, but you do me wrong to war against me. Yahweh, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.”

²⁷بنابران، من به شما کدام بدی نکرده ام، بلکه این تو هستی که قصد جنگ را داری و به ما بدی می کنی. و خداوند که داور عادل است فیصله خواهد کرد که گناهکار کیست. قوم اسرائیل یا مردم عمون.»

²⁸However the king of the children of Ammon didn’t listen to the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

²⁸با اینهمه دلایل بازهم پادشاه عمونیان به پیام یِفتاح گوش نداد.

²⁹Then the Spirit of Yahweh came on Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over to the children of Ammon.

²⁹آنگاه روح خداوند بر یِفتاح آمد و با سپاه خود از جِلعاد و مَنَسّی گذشته به مِصفۀ جِلعاد آمد و در آنجا برای حمله آماده شد.

³⁰Jephthah vowed a vow to Yahweh, and said, “If you will indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,

³⁰یِفتاح نذر گرفت که اگر خداوند به او کمک کند که عمونیان را شکست بدهد،

³¹then it shall be, that whatever comes forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Yahweh’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.”

³¹در وقت بازگشت به وطن، اولین کسی را که از دروازۀ خانۀ او بیرون شود به عنوان قربانی سوختنی برای خداوند تقدیم می کند.

³²So Jephthah passed over to the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Yahweh delivered them into his hand.

³²پس یِفتاح سپاه خود را برای حمله بر عمونیان بسوی میدان جنگ حرکت داد.

³³He struck them from Aroer until you come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and to Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

³³و در یک حملۀ ناگهانی با کمک خداوند آن ها را شکست داد و بیست شهر شان را از عروعیر تا مِنِیت از بین برد و همۀ مردم را تا آبیل کرامیم بقتل رساند. به این ترتیب، عمونیان از دست اسرائیل شکست خوردند.

³⁴Jephthah came to Mizpah to his house; and behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.

³⁴بعد از آن یِفتاح به خانۀ خود در مِصفه برگشت. و یگانه دختر او، در حالیکه رقص می کرد و دایره می زد به استقبال او از خانه بیرون شد. یِفتاح بغیر از او پسر یا دختر دیگر نداشت.

³⁵It happened, when he saw her, that he tore his clothes, and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you are one of those who trouble me; for I have opened my mouth to Yahweh, and I can’t go back.”

³⁵وقتی چشم یِفتاح بر دخترش افتاد، یخن خود را پاره کرد و گفت: «آه، ای دخترم، تو مرا بیچاره و خوار ساختی و یکی از آزاردهندگان من شدی، زیرا من به خداوند قول داده ام و نمی توانم از آن برگردم.»

³⁶She said to him, “My father, you have opened your mouth to Yahweh; do to me according to that which has proceeded out of your mouth, because Yahweh has taken vengeance for you on your enemies, even on the children of Ammon.”

³⁶دخترش به او گفت: «ای پدر من، مطابق قولیکه به خداوند داده ای، رفتار کن. مخصوصاً حالا که خداوند انتقام ما را از دشمن ما، یعنی عمونیان گرفت.

³⁷She said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down on the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.”

³⁷اما اول برای من دو ماه مهلت بده تا بر کوهها گردش کنم و بخاطر اینکه هرگز ازدواج نخواهم کرد، با دوستانم ماتم بگیرم.»

³⁸He said, “Go.” He sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and mourned her virginity on the mountains.

³⁸پدرش گفت: «برو!» و آن دختر برای دو ماه از خانۀ پدر خود رفت و با دوستان خود برای گردش به کوهها رفت و بخاطریکه باکره از دنیا خواهد رفت، ماتم گرفت.

³⁹It happened at the end of two months, that she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she was a virgin. It was a custom in Israel,

³⁹بعد از ختم دو ماه پیش پدر خود برگشت و پدرش مطابق قولی که به خداوند داده بود، رفتار کرد. بنابراین آن دختر هرگز ازدواج نکرد. از آن ببعد، در اسرائیل عادت مردم شد،که دختران جوان هر سال بیرون می رفتند و به مدت چهار روز برای دختر یِفتاح جِلعادی ماتم می گرفتند.

⁴⁰that the daughters of Israel went yearly to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
