¹The children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh: and Yahweh delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

¹مردم اسرائیل باز کارهائی کردند که در نظر خداوند زشت بودند. بنابران، خداوند آن ها را برای هفت سال اسیر حکومت مدیانی ها ساخت.

²The hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

²بعد از آنکه مدیانی ها قوم اسرائیل را مغلوب کرد، ظلم آن ها بقدری بود که مردم اسرائیل را مجبور ساختند که در تونلها و غارهای کوه زندگی کنند.

³So it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east; they came up against them;

³و هر وقتیکه مردم اسرائیل کشت و زراعت می کردند مدیانی ها، عمالیقی ها و مردم مشرق زمین می آمدند و بر آن ها هجوم می آوردند.

⁴and they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, until you come to Gaza, and left no sustenance in Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor donkey.

⁴در آنجا خیمه زده، کشت و زراعت آن ها را تا به غزه از بین می بردند. و همه چیز را، از خوراک گرفته تا گوسفند، گاو و الاغ تلف می کردند.

⁵For they came up with their livestock and their tents; they came in as locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number: and they came into the land to destroy it.

⁵آن ها با رمه و گلۀ خود می آمدند و تعداد شترهای آن ها آنقدر زیاد بود که مثل مور و ملخ هجوم می آوردند. و هر چیزی را خراب و تباه می کردند.

⁶Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried to Yahweh.

⁶و مردم اسرائیل پیش مدیانی ها بسیار خوار و حقیر شدند.

⁷It happened, when the children of Israel cried to Yahweh because of Midian,

⁷بنابران، برای کمک بحضور خداوند گریه و ناله کردند. و چون خداوند ناله و گریۀ شان را بخاطر ظلم مدیانی ها شنید،

⁸that Yahweh sent a prophet to the children of Israel: and he said to them, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, ‘I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

⁸پیغمبری را برای مردم اسرائیل فرستاد. و او به مردم گفت: «خداوند چنین می فرماید: من شما را از مصر و از کشور مردمیکه غلام آن ها بودید، بیرون آوردم.

⁹and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land;

⁹و از دست مصریان و ستمگران نجات دادم. دشمنان را از سر راه تان دور کردم و مُلک و زمین شانرا به شما بخشیدم.

¹⁰and I said to you, “I am Yahweh your God; you shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.” But you have not listened to my voice.’”

¹⁰به شما گفتم که من خداوند، خدای شما هستم. از خدایان اموریان که در مُلک شان بسر می برید، نترسید. اما شما به سخنان من گوش ندادید.»

¹¹The angel of Yahweh came, and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained to Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

¹¹یکروز فرشتۀ خداوند آمد و بزیر درخت بلوطی، در عُفره نشست. آنجا متعلق به یوآش اَبیعَزَری بود. پسرش، جِدعُون از ترس مدیانی ها گندم را در چرخُشت، جائیکه انگور را برای شراب می فشردند، می کوبید تا از نظر آن ها پنهان باشد.

¹²The angel of Yahweh appeared to him, and said to him, “Yahweh is with you, you mighty man of valor!”

¹²فرشتۀ خداوند بر او ظاهر شد و گفت: «ای مرد دلاور، خداوند همراه تو است.»

¹³Gideon said to him, “Oh, my lord, if Yahweh is with us, why then has all this happened to us? Where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, ‘Didn’t Yahweh bring us up from Egypt?’ But now Yahweh has cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.”

¹³جِدعُون جواب داد: «آقا اگر خداوند همراه ما است، پس چرا به این روز بد گرفتار هستیم؟ کجاست آنهمه کارهای عجیب خداوند که پدران ما از آن ها برای ما حکایت می کردند و می گفتند: خداوند ما را از مصر بیرون آورد؟ اما حالا ما را ترک کرد و اسیر حکومت مدیانی ها ساخت.»

¹⁴Yahweh looked at him, and said, “Go in this your might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian. Haven’t I sent you?”

¹⁴خداوند رو بطرف او کرده فرمود: «با همین قوتی که داری برو و مردم اسرائیل را از دست مدیانی ها نجات بده! من ترا می فرستم!»

¹⁵He said to him, “O Lord The word translated “Lord” is “Adonai.” , how shall I save Israel? Behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.”

¹⁵جِدعُون گفت: «چطور می توانم قوم اسرائیل را نجات بدهم، چون خانوادۀ من ضعیف ترین خانواده های قبیلۀ مَنَسّی است و من خودم کوچکترین افراد فامیلم می باشم؟»

¹⁶Yahweh said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.”

¹⁶خداوند فرمود: «من همراه تو هستم و تو می توانی به تنهائی مدیانی ها را شکست بدهی.»

¹⁷He said to him, “If now I have found favor in your sight, then show me a sign that it is you who talk with me.

¹⁷جِدعُون گفت: «اگر واقعاً میل داری که به من کمک کنی، پس علامه ای به من نشان بده تا بدانم که تو حقیقتاً خداوند هستی که با من حرف می زنی.

¹⁸Please don’t go away, until I come to you, and bring out my present, and lay it before you.” He said, “I will wait until you come back.”

¹⁸اما لطفاً از اینجا نرو تا من بروم و یک تحفه بیاورم و بحضورت تقدیم کنم.» خداوند فرمود: «تا تو برگردی من جایی نمی روم.»

¹⁹Gideon went in, and prepared a young goat, and unleavened cakes of an ephah 1 ephah is about 22 litres or about 2/3 of a bushel of meal. He put the meat in a basket and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out to him under the oak, and presented it.

¹⁹پس جِدعُون به خانۀ خود رفت. بزغاله ای را کباب کرد و یک اندازه آرد را گرفته از آن نان فطیر پُخت. بعد گوشت را در تُکری و شوربا را در کاسه ای ریخت و در زیر درخت بلوط بحضور خداوند تقدیم کرد.

²⁰The angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth.” He did so.

²⁰فرشتۀ خداوند به او گفت: «این گوشت و نان فطیر را بگیر و بالای این سنگ بگذار و شوربا را بر آن ها بریز.» جِدعُون اطاعت کرد.

²¹Then the angel of Yahweh stretched out the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes; and fire went up out of the rock, and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of Yahweh departed out of his sight.

²¹آنگاه فرشتۀ خداوند با نوک عصائی که در دستش بود، گوشت و نان فطیر را لمس کرد و آتشی از سنگ جهید و گوشت و نان فطیر را بلعید. بعد فرشتۀ خداوند از نظرش ناپدید شد.

²²Gideon saw that he was the angel of Yahweh; and Gideon said, “Alas, Lord Yahweh! Because I have seen the angel of Yahweh face to face!”

²²آنگاه جِدعُون دانست که او واقعاً فرشتۀ خداوند بود و گفت: «آه، ای خداوند، خدای من! من فرشتۀ ترا روبرو دیدم.»

²³Yahweh said to him, “Peace be to you! Don’t be afraid. You shall not die.”

²³خداوند به او فرمود: «سلامتی بر تو باد. نترس، تو نمی میری.»

²⁴Then Gideon built an altar there to Yahweh, and called it “Yahweh is Peace or, Yahweh Shalom .” To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

²⁴و جِدعُون در آنجا قربانگاهی برای خداوند ساخت و آنرا «خداوند سرچشمۀ صلح و سلامتی است» نامید که تا به امروز در عُفره که متعلق به اَبیعَزَرِیان است باقی است.

²⁵It happened the same night, that Yahweh said to him, “Take your father’s bull, even the second bull seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is by it;

²⁵در همان شب خداوند به او فرمود: «گاو پدرت را که هفت ساله است بگیر و به قربانگاه بَعل که متعلق به پدرت است، ببر. قربانگاه را ویران کن و بت اَشیره را که در پهلوی آن است، بشکن.

²⁶and build an altar to Yahweh your God on the top of this stronghold, in an orderly way, and take the second bull, and offer a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah which you shall cut down.”

²⁶بجای آن برای خداوند، خدای خود بر سر این قلعه قربانگاه مناسبی بساز. بعد گاو را گرفته با چوب بت اَشیره قربانی سوختنی تقدیم کن.»

²⁷Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as Yahweh had spoken to him: and it happened, because he feared his father’s household and the men of the city, so that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

²⁷جِدعُون ده نفر از خدمتگاران را با خود برد و قرار فرمودۀ خداوند رفتار کرد. و چون از فامیل خود و مردم می ترسید، آن کار را بعوض روز در شب اجراء کرد.

²⁸When the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bull was offered on the altar that was built.

²⁸وقتی مردم شهر، صبح وقت روز دیگر به آنجا آمدند و قربانگاه را ویران و بت اَشیره را شکسته یافتند. بر قربانگاه نَو گاو قربانی را دیدند،

²⁹They said one to another, “Who has done this thing?” When they inquired and asked, they said, “Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing.”

²⁹از یکدیگر پرسیدند: «این کار را چه کسی کرده است؟» بعد از پرسش و تحقیق فهمیدند که کار جِدعُون پسر یوآش بوده است.

³⁰Then the men of the city said to Joash, “Bring out your son, that he may die, because he has broken down the altar of Baal, and because he has cut down the Asherah that was by it.”

³⁰پس مردم شهر پیش یوآش رفتند و به او گفتند: «پسرت را بیرون بیاور. سزای او مرگ است، زیرا قربانگاه بَعل را ویران کرده و بت اَشیره را که در پهلوی آن بود، شکسته است.»

³¹Joash said to all who stood against him, “Will you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? He who will contend for him, let him be put to death by morning. If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because someone has broken down his altar.”

³¹اما یوآش به آنهائی که برای دستگیری پسرش آمده بودند گفت: «شما می خواهید به بعل کمک کنید و از او طرفداری نمائید؟ ولی این را بدانید که هر کسیکه بخواهد از او دفاع کند، تا فردا صبح می میرد. اگر او واقعاً خدا است البته می تواند خودش از کسی که قربانگاهش را ویران کرده است، انتقام بگیرد.»

³²Therefore on that day he named him Jerub-Baal, “Jerub-Baal” means “Let Baal contend.” saying, “Let Baal contend against him, because he has broken down his altar.”

³²از آن روز ببعد جِدعُون را یَرُ بَعل (یعنی «بگذارید بعل از خودش دفاع کند») نامیدند. زیرا یوآش گفت: «بگذارید بعل از خودش دفاع کند، زیرا جِدعُون قربانگاه او را از بین برده است.»

³³Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east assembled themselves together; and they passed over, and encamped in the valley of Jezreel.

³³آنگاه همۀ مدیانی ها، عمالَقه و مردم مشرق زمین یکجا شدند و از دریای اُردن عبور کرده در وادی یِزرعیل اردو زدند.

³⁴But the Spirit of Yahweh came on Gideon; and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered together after him.

³⁴بعد روح خداوند بر جِدعُون آمد و او شیپور را نواخت و مردم اَبیعَزَر را جمع کرد که بدنبال او بروند.

³⁵He sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they also were gathered together after him: and he sent messengers to Asher, and to Zebulun, and to Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

³⁵و قاصدانی را هم به تمام قبیلۀ مَنَسّی فرستاد و آن ها هم آمدند و بدنبال او رفتند. همچنین به قبایل اَشیر، زبولون و نفتالی پیام روان کرد و آن ها هم آمدند و به او پیوستند.

³⁶Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken,

³⁶جِدعُون به خدا گفت: «اگر همانطوریکه وعده فرمودی، واقعاً قوم اسرائیل را بوسیلۀ من نجات خواهی داد،

³⁷behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then shall I know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken.”

³⁷پس من پشم گوسفند را در خرمنگاه می گذارم. اگر شبنم تنها بر پشم بوده و زمین خشک باشد، آنوقت می دانم که اسرائیل به دست من نجات می یابد.»

³⁸It was so; for he rose up early on the next day, and pressed the fleece together, and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.

³⁸و همینطور هم شد. وقتی روز دیگر، صبح وقت از خواب بیدار شد و رفت و پشم را فشرد، از پشم آنقدر شبنم چکید که یک کاسه پُر شد.

³⁹Gideon said to God, “Don’t let your anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once. Please let me make a trial just this once with the fleece. Let it now be dry only on the fleece, and on all the ground let there be dew.”

³⁹آنگاه جِدعُون به خدا گفت: «غضب تو بر من افروخته نشود. من یکبار دیگر هم می خواهم امتحان کنم. این دفعه پشم باید خشک بماند و زمین اطراف آن با شبنم تَر باشد.»و خدا مطابق خواهش او عمل کرد. پشم خشک ماند و زمین اطراف آن با شبنم تر بود.

⁴⁰God did so that night: for it was dry on the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
