¹Since many have undertaken to set in order a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us,

¹تقدیم به عالیجناب تِیوفیلوس: تا به حال نویسندگان بسیاری به نوشتن شرح وقایعی که در بین ما رخ داده است، اقدام کرده اند

²even as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word delivered them to us,

²و آنچه را که بوسیلۀ شاهدان عینی اولیه و صاحبان آن پیام به ما رسیده است به قلم آورده اند.

³it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write to you in order, most excellent Theophilus;

³من نیز به نوبۀ خود، به عنوان کسی که جریان کامل این وقایع را جزء به جزء مطالعه و بررسی کرده است، صلاح دیدم که این پیش آمد ها را به ترتیب تاریخ وقوع برای تو بنویسم

⁴that you might know the certainty concerning the things in which you were instructed.

⁴تا به حقیقت همۀ مطالبی که از آن اطلاع یافته ای پی ببری.

⁵There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the priestly division of Abijah. He had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.

⁵در زمان سلطنت هیرودیس، پادشاه یهودیه، کاهنی به نام زکریا از فرقۀ اَبِیا زندگی می کرد. همسر او نیز از خاندان هارون بود و اِلیزابِت نام داشت.

⁶They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.

⁶این دو نفر در نظر خدا درستکار بودند و بدون کوتاهی، کلیه احکام و اوامر خداوند را رعایت می کردند.

⁷But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they both were well advanced in years.

⁷اما فرزندی نداشتند زیرا اِلیزابِت نازا بود و هر دو سالخورده بودند.

⁸Now it happened, while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his division,

⁸چون نوبت خدمت روزانه در عبادتگاه به فرقۀ زکریا رسید، او به عنوان کاهن مشغول انجام وظایف خود شد.

⁹according to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.

⁹مطابق رسوم کاهنان قرعه به نام او برآمد که به قدس الاقداس عبادتگاه وارد شود و بُخُور بسوزاند.

¹⁰The whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense.

¹⁰در وقت سوزاندن بُخُور، تمام جماعت در بیرون ایستاده و دست به دعا برداشته بودند.

¹¹An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

¹¹در آنجا فرشتۀ خداوند به او ظاهر شد و در سمت راست بخور سوز ایستاد.

¹²Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.

¹²زکریا از دیدن این منظره تکانی خورد و ترسید.

¹³But the angel said to him, “Don’t be afraid, Zacharias, because your request has been heard, and your wife, Elizabeth, will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.

¹³اما فرشته به او گفت: «ای زکریا، نترس. دعاهای تو مستجاب شده و همسرت اِلیزابِت برای تو پسری خواهد زایید و او را یحیی خواهی نامید.

¹⁴You will have joy and gladness; and many will rejoice at his birth.

¹⁴خوشی و سُرُور نصیب تو خواهد بود و بسیاری از تولد او شادمان خواهند شد.

¹⁵For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.

¹⁵زیرا او در نظر خداوند بزرگ خواهد بود و هرگز به شراب و باده لب نخواهد زد. از همان ابتدای تولد از روح القدس پُر خواهد بود

¹⁶He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord, their God.

¹⁶و بسیاری از بنی اسرائیل را بسوی خداوند، خدای آنها باز خواهد گردانید.

¹⁷He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to prepare a people prepared for the Lord.”

¹⁷با روح و قدرت الیاس مانند پیشاهنگی در حضور خدا قدم خواهد زد تا پدران و فرزندان را آشتی دهد و سرکشان را به راه نیکان آورد و مردمانی مستعد برای خداوند آماده سازد.»

¹⁸Zacharias said to the angel, “How can I be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.”

¹⁸زکریا به فرشته گفت: «چطور می توانم این را باور کنم؟ من پیر هستم و زنم نیز سالخورده است.»

¹⁹The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God. I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news.

¹⁹فرشته به او جواب داد: «من جبرائیل هستم که در حضور خدا می ایستم و فرستاده شده ام که با تو صحبت کنم و این مژده را به تو برسانم.

²⁰Behold, you will be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things will happen, because you didn’t believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”

²⁰پس توجه کن: تو تا هنگام وقوع این امور گنگ خواهی شد و نیروی تکلم را از دست خواهی داد، زیرا سخنان مرا که در وقت مقرر تمام خواهد شد باور نکردی.»

²¹The people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marveled that he delayed in the temple.

²¹جماعتی که منتظر زکریا بودند از اینکه او آن همه وقت در قدس الاقداس عبادتگاه ماند متعجب گشتند.

²²When he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple. He continued making signs to them, and remained mute.

²²وقتی بیرون آمد و قوت سخن گفتن نداشت، آنها فهمیدند که در قدس الاقداس عبادتگاه چیزی دیده است و چون نمی توانست حرف بزند به اشاره مطلب خود را می فهماند.

²³It happened, when the days of his service were fulfilled, he departed to his house.

²³زکریا وقتی که دورۀ خدمت کهانت خود را به انجام رسانید به خانه بازگشت.

²⁴After these days Elizabeth, his wife, conceived, and she hid herself five months, saying,

²⁴بعد از آن همسرش اِلیزابِت حامله شد و مدت پنج ماه از مردم گوشه گیری کرد و با خود می گفت:

²⁵“Thus has the Lord done to me in the days in which he looked at me, to take away my reproach among men.”

²⁵«این کار را خداوند برای من کرده است و با این لطف خود رسوایی مرا پیش مردم از میان برداشته است.»

²⁶Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

²⁶در ماه ششم جبرائیل فرشته از جانب خدا به شهری به نام ناصره، که در ولایت جلیل واقع است

²⁷to a virgin pledged to be married to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.

²⁷به نزد باکره ای که نامزد مردی به نام یوسف ـ از خاندان داود ـ بود فرستاده شد. نام این دختر مریم بود.

²⁸Having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, you highly favored one! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women!”

²⁸فرشته وارد شد و به او گفت: «سلام، ای کسی که مورد لطف هستی، خداوند با توست.»

²⁹But when she saw him, she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered what kind of salutation this might be.

²⁹اما مریم از آنچه فرشته گفت بسیار پریشان شد و ندانست که معنی این سلام چیست.

³⁰The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

³⁰فرشته به او گفت: «ای مریم، نترس زیرا خداوند به تو لطف فرموده است.

³¹Behold, you will conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and will call his name ‘Jesus.’

³¹تو حامله خواهی شد و پسری خواهی زایید و نام او را عیسی (یشوعه) خواهی گذاشت.

³²He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father, David,

³²او بزرگ خواهد بود و به پسر خدای متعال ملقب خواهد شد، خداوند، خدا تخت پادشاهی جدش داود را به او عطا خواهد فرمود.

³³and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom.”

³³او تا به ابد بر خاندان یعقوب فرمانروایی خواهد کرد و پادشاهی او هرگز پایانی نخواهد داشت.»

³⁴Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, seeing I am a virgin?”

³⁴مریم به فرشته گفت: «این چگونه ممکن است؟ من باهیچ مردی رابطه نداشته ام.»

³⁵The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God.

³⁵فرشته به او جواب داد: «روح القدس بر تو خواهد آمد و قدرت خدای متعال بر تو سایه خواهد انداخت و به این سبب آن نوزاد مقدس، پسر خدا نامیده خواهد شد.

³⁶Behold, Elizabeth, your relative, also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.

³⁶بدان که خویشاوند تو اِلیزابِت در سن پیری پسری در رَحِم دارد و آن کسی که نازا به حساب می آمد، اکنون شش ماه از حاملگی او می گذرد.

³⁷For everything spoken by God is possible.”

³⁷زیرا برای خدا هیچ چیز محال نیست.»

³⁸Mary said, “Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it to me according to your word.” The angel departed from her.

³⁸مریم گفت: «من کنیز خداوند هستم، همانطور که تو گفتی بشود.» و فرشته از پیش او رفت.

³⁹Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah,

³⁹در آن روزها مریم عازم سفر شد و با تیزی و شتاب به شهری واقع در کوهستان یهودیه رفت.

⁴⁰and entered into the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.

⁴⁰او به خانۀ زکریا داخل شد و به اِلیزابِت سلام داد.

⁴¹It happened, when Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, that the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

⁴¹وقتی اِلیزابِت سلام مریم را شنید بچه در رَحِمش تکان خورد. اِلیزابِت از روح القدس پُر شد

⁴²She called out with a loud voice, and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!

⁴²و با صدای بلند گفت: «تو در بین زنان متبارک هستی و مبارک است ثمرۀ رَحِم تو.

⁴³Why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

⁴³من کی هستم که مادر خداوندم به دیدنم بیاید؟

⁴⁴For behold, when the voice of your greeting came into my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy!

⁴⁴همینکه سلام تو به گوش من رسید، بچه از خوشی در رَحِم من تکان خورد.

⁴⁵Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord!”

⁴⁵خوشا بحال او که باور می کند زیرا وعدۀ خداوند برای او به انجام خواهد رسید.»

⁴⁶Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord.

⁴⁶مریم گفت: «جان من خداوند را می ستاید

⁴⁷و روح من در نجات دهندۀ من، خدا، خوشی می کند،

⁴⁸for he has looked at the humble state of his handmaid. For behold, from now on, all generations will call me blessed.

⁴⁸چون او به کنیز ناچیز خود نظر لطف داشته است. از این پس همۀ نسلها مرا خوشبخت خواهند خواند،

⁴⁹For he who is mighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name.

⁴⁹زیرا آن قادر مطلق کارهای بزرگی برای من کرده است. نام او مقدس است.

⁵⁰رحمت او پشت در پشت برای کسانی است که از او می ترسند.

⁵¹He has shown strength with his arm. He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

⁵¹دست خداوند با قدرت کار کرده است، متکبران را با خیالات دلِ شان تار و مار کرده

⁵²He has put down princes from their thrones. And has exalted the lowly.

⁵²و زورمندان را از تختهای شان به زیر افگنده، و فروتنان را سربلند کرده است.

⁵³He has filled the hungry with good things. He has sent the rich away empty.

⁵³گرسنگان را با چیزهای نیکو سیر نموده و ثروتمندان را با دست خالی روانه کرده است.

⁵⁴به خاطر محبت پایدار خود، از بندۀ خود اسرائیل حمایت کرده است،

⁵⁵As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and his seed forever.”

⁵⁵همانطور که به اجداد ما یعنی به ابراهیم و به اولاد او تا به ابد وعده داد.»

⁵⁶Mary stayed with her about three months, and then returned to her house.

⁵⁶مریم در حدود سه ماه پیش اِلیزابِت ماند و بعد به منزل خود بازگشت.

⁵⁷Now the time that Elizabeth should give birth was fulfilled, and she brought forth a son.

⁵⁷وقت زایمان اِلیزابِت فرارسید و پسری به دنیا آورد.

⁵⁸Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy towards her, and they rejoiced with her.

⁵⁸وقتی همسایگان و خویشاوندان او باخبر شدند که خداوند چه لطف بزرگی در حق او کرده است، مانند او شاد و خوشحال گشتند.

⁵⁹It happened on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zacharias, after the name of the father.

⁵⁹پس از یک هفته آمدند تا نوزاد را سنت نمایند و در نظر داشتند نام پدرش زکریا را بر او بگذارند.

⁶⁰His mother answered, “Not so; but he will be called John.”

⁶⁰اما مادرش گفت: «نخیر، نام او باید یحیی باشد.»

⁶¹They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.”

⁶¹آن ها گفتند: «اما در خاندان تو هیچ کس چنین نامی ندارد»،

⁶²They made signs to his father, what he would have him called.

⁶²و با اشاره از پدرش پرسیدند که تصمیم او دربارۀ نام طفل چیست.

⁶³He asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, “His name is John.” They all marveled.

⁶³او لوحی خواست و در برابر تعجب همگی نوشت: «نام او یحیی است.»

⁶⁴His mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue freed, and he spoke, blessing God.

⁶⁴ناگهان زبانش باز شد و به ستایش خدا پرداخت.

⁶⁵Fear came on all who lived around them, and all these sayings were talked about throughout all the hill country of Judea.

⁶⁵تمام همسایگان ترسیدند و کلیۀ این اخبار در سرتاسر کوهستان های یهودیه انتشار یافت.

⁶⁶All who heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, “What then will this child be?” The hand of the Lord was with him.

⁶⁶همۀ کسانی که این موضوع را شنیدند دربارۀ آن فکر می کردند و می گفتند: «این کودک چه خواهد شد؟ در واقع دست خداوند با اوست.»

⁶⁷His father, Zacharias, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,

⁶⁷پدر او زکریا، از روح القدس پُر شد و چنین پیشگویی کرد:

⁶⁸“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited and worked redemption for his people;

⁶⁸«خداوند، خدای اسرائیل را سپاس باد. زیرا به یاری قوم خود آمده و آنها را رهایی داده است.

⁶⁹از خاندان بندۀ خود داود، رهانندۀ نیرومندی بر افراشته است.

⁷⁰او از قدیم از زبان انبیای مقدس خود وعده داد

⁷¹که ما را از دست دشمنان رهایی بخشد و از دست همه کسانی که از ما نفرت دارند آزاد سازد

⁷²to show mercy towards our fathers, to remember his holy covenant,

⁷²و با پدران ما به رحمت رفتار نماید و پیمان مقدس خود را بخاطر آورد.

⁷³برای پدر ما ابراهیم سوگند یاد کرد

⁷⁴to grant to us that we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, should serve him without fear,

⁷⁴که ما را از دست دشمنان نجات دهد و عنایت فرماید که او را بدون ترس

⁷⁵با پاکی و راستی تا زنده ایم عبادت نماییم.

⁷⁶And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways,

⁷⁶و تو، ای فرزندم، پیامبر خدای متعال نامیده خواهی شد. زیرا پیش قدمهای خداوند خواهی رفت تا راه او را آماده سازی

⁷⁷و به قوم او خبر دهی که با آمرزش گناهان شان رستگار می شوند،

⁷⁸because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the dawn from on high will visit us,

⁷⁸زیرا از رحمت و دلسوزی خدای ماست که آفتاب صبحگاهی از آسمان بر ما طلوع خواهد کرد

⁷⁹to shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death; to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

⁷⁹تا بر کسانی که در تاریکی و در سایۀ مرگ به سر می برند بدرخشد و قدمهای ما را به راه صلح و سلامتی هدایت فرماید.»و اما طفل بزرگ می شد و در روح قوی می گشت و تا روزی که علناً به قوم اسرائیل ظاهر شد، در بیابان بسر می برد.

⁸⁰The child was growing, and becoming strong in spirit, and was in the desert until the day of his public appearance to Israel.
