1Now it happened, when it was reported to Sanballat and Tobiah, and to Geshem the Arabian, and to the rest of our enemies, that I had built the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though even to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates;)
1سَنبَلَط، طوبیا، جَشَمِ عرب و بقیۀ دشمنان ما شنیدند که کار ترمیم دیوار رو به اتمام است (هرچند تمام پله های دروازه ها را ننشانده بودیم)،
2that Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come, let us meet together in the villages in the plain of Ono.” But they intended to harm me.
2پس سَنبَلَط و جَشَم برای من پیام فرستادند که در یکی از دهاتِ دشتِ اونو به دیدن آن ها بروم. اما من پی بردم که می خواهند به من آسیب برسانند.
3I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I can’t come down. Why should the work cease, while I leave it, and come down to you?”
3بنابران، به آن ها این چنین جواب دادم: «من مشغول کار مهمی هستم و نمی توانم از کارم دست بکشم و بدیدن شما بیایم.»
4They sent to me four times after this sort; and I answered them the same way.
4آن ها چهار بار برای من همان پیام را فرستادند و من هم هر بار همان جواب را دادم.
5Then Sanballat sent his servant to me the same way the fifth time with an open letter in his hand,
5بار پنجم مأمور سَنبَلَط با یک نامۀ سرگشاده پیش من آمد؛ مضمون نامه چنین بود:
6in which was written, “It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu says it, that you and the Jews intend to rebel. Because of that, you are building the wall. You would be their king, according to these words.
6«جَشَم به من می گوید که بین مردم شایع شده که تو و یهودیان قصد شورش را دارید، و به همین خاطر است که دور شهر اورشلیم دیوار می سازی؛ و بنا به این گزارش، تو می خواهی پادشاه آن ها شوی.
7You have also appointed prophets to preach of you at Jerusalem, saying, ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now it will be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.”
7از این گذشته انبیائی را هم تعیین کرده ای تا در اورشلیم مردم را دور خود جمع کنند و بگویند که نِحِمیا پادشاه است. مطمئن باش که این خبرها به گوش اُردشیر پادشاه خواهد رسید. پس بهتر است که پیش من بیائی تا در این مورد با هم مشوره کنیم.»
8Then I sent to him, saying, “There are no such things done as you say, but you imagine them out of your own heart.”
8من جواب دادم: «آنچه که می گوئی حقیقت ندارد. اینها ساخته و پرداختۀ خودت است.»
9For they all would have made us afraid, saying, “Their hands will be weakened from the work, that it not be done. But now, strengthen my hands.”
9آن ها می خواستند با این حرفها ما را بترسانند تا ما از کار دست بکشیم، ولی من دعا کردم تا خدا مرا تقویت کند.
10I went to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home; and he said, “Let us meet together in God’s house, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple; for they will come to kill you; yes, in the night will they come to kill you.”
10شِمَعیه (پسر دِلایا و نواسۀ مهیتبئیل) در خانۀ خود نشسته و دروازه را بسته بود و من بدیدنش رفتم. وقتی مرا دید، گفت: «باید هرچه زودتر در عبادتگاه مخفی شویم و دروازه ها را قفل کنیم، زیرا امشب آن ها می آیند که ترا بکشند.»
11I said, “Should such a man as I flee? Who is there that, being such as I, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.”
11ولی من جواب دادم: «من مردی نیستم که فرار کنم و پنهان شوم. آیا فکر می کنید که من برای حفظ جانم داخل عبادتگاه می شوم؟ من هرگز این کار را نمی کنم.»
12I discerned, and behold, God had not sent him; but he pronounced this prophecy against me. Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
12بعد فهمیدم که پیام شِمَعیه از جانب خدا نبود، بلکه طوبیا و سَنبَلَط او را اجیر کرده بودند تا مرا بترسانند و وادار سازند که به عبادتگاه فرار کنم و مرتکب گناه شوم تا بتوانند مرا رسوا کنند.
13He hired so that I would be afraid, do so, and sin, and that they might have material for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
13آنگاه دعا کردم: «ای خدای من، طوبیا و سَنبَلَط را بسزای اعمال شان برسان و هم بیاد آور که چگونه نوعَدیۀ نبیه و سایر انبیاء می خواستند مرا بترسانند.»
14“Remember, my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.”
14سرانجام کار اعمار مجدد دیوار در بیست و پنجم ماه اِیلُول تمام شد. این کار پنجاه و دو روز طول کشید.
15So the wall was finished in the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days.
15وقتی دشمنان ما که در سرزمین های همسایۀ ما بودند این را دیدند، رسوا شدند و فهمیدند که این کار با کمک خدای ما تمام شده است.
16It happened, when all our enemies heard of it, that all the nations that were about us were afraid, and were much cast down in their own eyes; for they perceived that this work was worked of our God.
16در این مدت نامه های زیادی بین طوبیا و بزرگان یهودا رد و بدل شد.
17Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and Tobiah’s letters came to them.
17در یهودا بسیاری با او همدست شده بودند، زیرا هم خودش داماد شِکَنیا (پسر آرَه) بود و هم پسرش، یَهُوحانان با دختر مَشُلام (پسر بَرَکیا) ازدواج کرده بود.مردم پیش من از طوبیا تعریف می کردند و هرچه که از من می شنیدند به او خبر می دادند. طوبیا هم برای اینکه مرا بترساند، نامه های تهدید آمیز برایم می نوشت.
18For there were many in Judah sworn to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah; and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah as wife.
18مردم پیش من از طوبیا تعریف می کردند و هرچه که از من می شنیدند به او خبر می دادند. طوبیا هم برای اینکه مرا بترساند، نامه های تهدید آمیز برایم می نوشت.
19Also they spoke of his good deeds before me, and reported my words to him. Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.
