¹All the people gathered themselves together as one man into the broad place that was before the water gate; and they spoke to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which Yahweh had commanded to Israel.

¹در روز اول ماه هفتم، تمام قوم اسرائیل به اورشلیم آمدند و در میدانِ مقابل «دروازۀ آب» جمع شدند و از عِزرای عالم خواستند تا کتاب توراتِ موسی را که خداوند به قوم اسرائیل عطا فرموده بود، بیاورد و بخواند.

²Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, both men and women, and all who could hear with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month.

²پس عِزرا تورات موسی را آورد و بالای یک منبر چوبی که برای این کار ساخته شده بود، رفت تا در موقع خواندن همه بتوانند او را ببینند. بعد در میدانِ مقابل «دروازۀ آب» ایستاد و وقتی کتاب را باز کرد، همه به احترام آن بر پا ایستادند. او از صبحِ وقت تا ظهر از کتاب تورات خواند. تمام مردان و زنان و کودکانی که در سِنی بودند که می توانستند بفهمند، با دقت گوش می دادند. در سمت راست او مَتتیا، شِمَع، عَنایا، اوریا، حِلقیا، مَعَسیا و در طرف چپ او فَدایا، میشائیل، مَلکیا، حاشوم، حَشبَدانه، زَکَریا و مَشُلام ایستاده بودند.

³He read therein before the broad place that was before the water gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women, and of those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law.

³عِزرا گفت: «سپاس بر خداوند، خدای عظیم!» و تمام قوم دستهای خود را بالا کرده در جواب گفتند: «آمین، آمین!» و رو به خاک افتاده خداوند را پرستش کردند.

⁴Ezra the scribe stood on a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Uriah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchijah, and Hashum, and Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam.

⁴سپس تمام قوم بر پا ایستادند و لاویان کتاب تورات را برای آن ها خوانده و تفسیر کردند تا مردم آن را بفهمند. این لاویان عبارت بودند از: یشوع، بانی، شرَبیا، یامین، عَقوب، شَبتای، هودویا، مَعَسیا، قَلیطا، عَزَریا، یُوزاباد، حَنان و فَلایا.

⁵Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up:

⁵وقتی مردم مطالب تورات را شنیدند، گریه کردند. پس عِزرای کاهن و نِحِمیا که حاکم بود و لاویان که تورات را تفسیر می کردند، به مردم گفتند: «در چنین روزی نباید گریه کنید، زیرا امروز روز مقدسِ خداوند، خدای شما است.

⁶and Ezra blessed Yahweh, the great God. All the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” with the lifting up of their hands. They bowed their heads, and worshiped Yahweh with their faces to the ground.

⁶بروید و خوراکهای لذیذ بخورید و شربتها بنوشید و به هر کسی که ندارد، حق و حصۀ او را بدهید. چون امروز برای خداوند، خدای ما روز مقدس است. پس غمگین نباشید، زیرا خوشی خداوند، قوّت شما است!»

⁷Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stayed in their place.

⁷لاویان هم مردم را آرام ساختند و گفتند: «امروز یک روز مقدس است، پس گریه نکنید و غمگین نباشید.»

⁸They read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly; and they gave the sense, so that they understood the reading.

⁸مردم رفتند، خوردند و نوشیدند، خوراک به فقرا فرستادند و خوشی کردند، زیرا کلام خدا را که برای شان خوانده شده بود، فهمیده بودند.

⁹Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites who taught the people, said to all the people, “This day is holy to Yahweh your God. Don’t mourn, nor weep.” For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.

⁹روز بعد، بزرگان خانواده ها با کاهنان و لاویان پیش عِزرا جمع شدند تا مطالب تورات را از او بشنوند.

¹⁰Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Don’t be grieved; for the joy of Yahweh is your strength.”

¹⁰وقتی تورات خوانده شد، آن ها متوجه شدند که خداوند به موسی فرموده بود: «قوم اسرائیل در مدتی که عید ماه هفتم را جشن می گیرند، باید در سایبانها زندگی کنند.»

¹¹So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, “Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be grieved.”

¹¹و تأکید شده بود که در تمام شهرهای اسرائیل و شهر اورشلیم اعلام شود که مردم به کوهها بروند و شاخه های درخت زیتون، چنار، خرما و سایر درختان سایه دار را بیاورند و مطابق هدایتی که به آن ها داده شده، از آن ها سایبانها بسازند.

¹²All the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.

¹²پس قوم اسرائیل رفتند شاخه های درخت را آوردند و روی بام و در حویلی خود، در حویلی عبادتگاه، در میدان «دروازۀ آب» و در میدان «دروازۀ افرایم» سایبانها ساختند.

¹³On the second day were gathered together the heads of fathers’ households of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, to Ezra the scribe, even to give attention to the words of the law.

¹³تمام کسانی که از تبعید برگشته بودند، در مدت هفت روز عید، در سایبانهائی که ساخته بودند، بسر بردند. آن ها بی نهایت خوشحال بودند، زیرا از زمان یوشع پسر نون تا آن روز، این مراسم رعایت نشده بود.در مدت هفت روزِ جشن، عِزرا هر روز از کتاب تورات می خواند. روز هشتم، مطابق امر موسی، محفل را با دعا و عبادت بپایان رساندند.

¹⁴They found written in the law, how that Yahweh had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month;

¹⁴در مدت هفت روزِ جشن، عِزرا هر روز از کتاب تورات می خواند. روز هشتم، مطابق امر موسی، محفل را با دعا و عبادت بپایان رساندند.

¹⁵and that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, “Go out to the mountain, and get olive branches, and branches of wild olive, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written.”

¹⁶So the people went out, and brought them, and made themselves booths, everyone on the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of God’s house, and in the broad place of the water gate, and in the broad place of the gate of Ephraim.

¹⁷All the assembly of those who had come again out of the captivity made booths, and lived in the booths; for since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun to that day the children of Israel had not done so. There was very great gladness.

¹⁸Also day by day, from the first day to the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. They kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according to the ordinance.
