¹Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

¹خداوند به موسی فرمود: «چند نفر را به کنعان، یعنی سرزمینی که می خواهم آن را به قوم اسرائیل ببخشم، بفرست تا آنجا را بررسی و مطالعه کنند. برای این منظور از هر قبیله یک رهبر را بفرست.»

²“Send men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel. Of every tribe of their fathers, you shall send a man, every one a prince among them.”

²پس موسی قرار فرمودۀ خداوند اشخاص ذیل را از اردوگاه خود، یعنی بیابان فاران، به سرزمین کنعان فرستاد: شَموع، پسر زَکور، از قبیلۀ رؤبین؛ شافاط، پسر حوری، از قبیلۀ شمعون؛ کالیب، پسر یَفُنه، از قبیلۀ یهودا؛ یجال، پسر یوسف، از قبیلۀ ایسَسکار؛ هوشع، پسر نون، از قبیلۀ افرایم؛ فِلتی، پسر رافو، از قبیلۀ بنیامین؛ جَدی ئیل، پسر سودی، از قبیلۀ زبولون؛ جَدی، پسر سوسی، از قبیلۀ مَنَسّی؛ عَمیئیل، پسر جَملی، از قبیلۀ دان؛ سَتور، پسر میکائیل، از قبیلۀ اَشیر؛ نَحبی، پسر وَفسی، از قبیلۀ نفتالی؛ جاویل، پسر ماکی، از قبیلۀ جاد.

³Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran according to the commandment of Yahweh: all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel.

³اینها نامهای کسانی بودند که موسی برای جاسوسی به آن سرزمین فرستاد. در همین موقع بود که موسی نام هوشع پسر نون را (که معنی آن «نجات» است)، به یوشع (یعنی «خداوند نجات می دهد») تبدیل کرد.

⁴These were their names: Of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.

⁴پس موسی آن ها را برای بررسی سرزمین کنعان با این هدایات فرستاد: «از اینجا بطرف شمال، به قسمت جنوب سرزمین کنعان و به سرزمین کوهستانی بروید

⁵Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.

⁵و وضع آنجا را مطالعه کرده معلوم کنید که آیا مردم آنجا قوی هستند یا ضعیف؟ تعداد شان کم است یا زیاد؟

⁶Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

⁶زمین آن ها حاصلخیز است یا خیر؟ مردم آنجا در جلگه ها زندگی می کنند یا در شهرهای مستحکم؟

⁷Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.

⁷خاک زمین شان با ثمر است یا بائر؟ آنجا درختان زیاد دارد یا نه؟ سعی کنید که از میوه و محصول آنجا مقداری را بطور نمونه با خود بیاورید.» (آن موقع موسم انگور بود.)

⁸Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun.

⁸پس آن ها رفتند و وضع زمین را از بیابان سین تا رِحوب در نزدیکی گذرگاه حمات مطالعه نمودند.

⁹Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.

⁹و از قسمت جنوب آنجا عبور کرده به حبرون رسیدند. در آنجا قبایل اخیمان، شیشای و تَلمَی که از سلسلۀ عناق بودند، زندگی می کردند. (حبرون هفت سال قبل از صوعَن مصر بنا یافته بود.)

¹⁰Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.

¹⁰سپس به درۀ اشکول وارد شدند و از آنجا یک خوشه انگور چیدند و با خود بردند. این خوشۀ انگور آنقدر سنگین بود که آن را به چوبی بسته دو نفر بر شانه های خود حمل می کردند. آن ها همچنین مقداری انار و انجیر هم بعنوان نمونه با خود بردند.

¹¹Of the tribe of Joseph, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi.

¹¹آن دره را بخاطر آن خوشۀ انگور، درۀ اشکول، (یعنی درۀ خوشه) نامیدند.

¹²Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.

¹²بعد از چهل روز آن ها از سفر برگشتند

¹³Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.

¹³و پیش موسی، هارون و تمام قوم اسرائیل که در قادِش واقع در بیابان فاران اردو زده بودند، رفتند و چگونگی سفر خود را به اطلاع آن ها رساندند و میوه هائی را که با خود آورده بودند به آن ها نشان دادند.

¹⁴Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi.

¹⁴به آن ها گفتند: «به سرزمینی که ما را فرستادید رفتیم و آن را مطالعه کردیم. آنجا را سرزمینی یافتیم حاصلخیز که شیر و عسل در آن جاری است. اینها میوه های آنجا هستند که بطور نمونه با خود آوردیم.

¹⁵Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.

¹⁵اما باشندگان آنجا مردم بسیار قوی هستند و در شهرهای بزرگ و مستحکم زندگی می کنند. برعلاوه ما اولادۀ عناق (غول پیکر) را هم در آنجا دیدیم.

¹⁶These are the names of the men who Moses sent to spy out the land. Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.

¹⁶مردم عمالیق در جنوب، حِتیان، یبوسیان و اموریان در مناطق کوهستانی و کنعانیان در سواحل بحر مدیترانه و دریای اُردن زندگی می کنند.»

¹⁷Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, “Go up this way by the South, and go up into the hill country:

¹⁷اما کالیب مردم را در حضور موسی خاموش ساخت و گفت: «فوری برویم آنجا را تصرف کنیم چون یقین داریم بر آن ها غالب می شویم.»

¹⁸and see the land, what it is; and the people who dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many;

¹⁸آنگاه مردانی که به آنجا رفته بودند گفتند: «ما نمی توانیم با آن مردم مقابله کنیم، زیرا آن ها قویتر از ما هستند.»

¹⁹and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds;

¹⁹به این ترتیب، آن ها خبرهای بد و منفی را در مورد مردم آن سرزمین در بین قوم شایع کردند و اظهار داشتند: «مردم آنجا همه قوی هیکل هستند و ساکنین آنجا را می خورند.اولادۀ عناق را دیدیم و آن ها آنقدر قوی اند و قد بلند دارند که ما به تناسب آن ها مثل ملخ بودیم.»

²⁰and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood therein, or not. Be courageous, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes.”

²⁰اولادۀ عناق را دیدیم و آن ها آنقدر قوی اند و قد بلند دارند که ما به تناسب آن ها مثل ملخ بودیم.»

²¹So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, to the entrance of Hamath.

²²They went up by the South, and came to Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

²³They came to the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it on a staff between two. They also brought some of the pomegranates and figs.

²⁴That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from there.

²⁵They returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days.

²⁶They went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word to them, and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.

²⁷They told him, and said, “We came to the land where you sent us; and surely it flows with milk and honey; and this is its fruit.

²⁸However the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. Moreover, we saw the children of Anak there.

²⁹Amalek dwells in the land of the South: and the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, dwell in the hill country; and the Canaanite dwells by the sea, and along by the side of the Jordan.”

³⁰Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.”

³¹But the men who went up with him said, “We aren’t able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.”

³²They brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out to the children of Israel, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eats up its inhabitants; and all the people who we saw in it are men of great stature.

³³There we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.”
