¹All the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.

¹مردم تمام شب با آواز بلند گریستند

²All the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would that we had died in this wilderness!

²و از دست موسی و هارون شکایت کرده گفتند: «ای کاش در مصر می مردیم یا در همین بیابان از بین می رفتیم.

³Why does Yahweh bring us to this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be a prey: wouldn’t it be better for us to return into Egypt?”

³خداوند ما را به این سرزمین آورد تا ما را با شمشیر دشمن بقتل برساند و زنان و فرزندان ما اسیر شوند، پس بهتر است که به مصر برگردیم.»

⁴They said one to another, “Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.”

⁴به یکدیگر گفتند: «بیائید که برای خود رهبری انتخاب کنیم تا ما را دوباره به مصر ببرد.»

⁵Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

⁵آنگاه موسی و هارون در پیش مردم اسرائیل رو به خاک افتادند.

⁶Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of those who spied out the land, tore their clothes:

⁶یوشع، پسر نون و کالیب، پسر یَفُنه که با چند نفر دیگر برای تحقیق و مطالعه به سرزمین کنعان رفته بودند، یخن خود را پاره کردند

⁷and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceeding good land.

⁷و به مردم اظهار داشتند: «سرزمین کنعان را ما بررسی کردیم. آنجا یک جای بسیار خوب است.

⁸If Yahweh delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us; a land which flows with milk and honey.

⁸اگر خداوند از ما خوشنود باشد، ما را به آنجا می برد و آن سرزمین را که شیر و عسل در آن جاری است، به ما می دهد.

⁹Only don’t rebel against Yahweh, neither fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defense is removed from over them, and Yahweh is with us. Don’t fear them.”

⁹پس شما نباید علیه خداوند تمرد کنید و از مردم کنعان بترسید، زیرا شکست دادن آن ها مثل نان خوردن برای ما آسان است. آن ها پُشت و پناهی ندارند، اما خداوند همراه ما است. از ایشان نترسید!»

¹⁰But all the congregation threatened to stone them with stones. The glory of Yahweh appeared in the Tent of Meeting to all the children of Israel.

¹⁰مردم اسرائیل بعوض اینکه به حرف آن ها گوش بدهند، خواستند که آن ها را سنگسار کنند. ناگاه جلال با شکوه خداوند در خیمۀ حضور خداوند بر تمام قوم اسرائیل ظاهر شد.

¹¹Yahweh said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? and how long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them?

¹¹خداوند به موسی فرمود: «تا بکی این قوم به من اهانت می کنند؟ با وجود اینهمه معجزاتی که من در بین شان نشان دادم باز هم به من ایمان نمی آورند.

¹²I will strike them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”

¹²پس می خواهم که آن ها را به مرض مهلکی مبتلا و از میراث محروم کنم و از تو یک قومی که بزرگتر و قویتر از اینها باشد بوجود آورم.»

¹³Moses said to Yahweh, “Then the Egyptians will hear it; for you brought up this people in your might from among them;

¹³اما موسی به خداوند گفت: «اگر این خبر بگوش مردم مصر برسد چه خواهند گفت؟ تو این قوم را با قدرت خود از دست آن مردم نجات دادی.

¹⁴and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you Yahweh are in the midst of this people; for you Yahweh are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them, and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.

¹⁴مردم مصر از این موضوع به باشندگان سرزمین کنعان خبر خواهند داد. مردم کنعان می دانند که تو ای خداوند، با این قوم هستی و خود را در ابری که بالای سر آن ها است نشان می دهی و با ستون ابر و آتش شب و روز آن ها را راهنمائی می کنی.

¹⁵Now if you killed this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying,

¹⁵حالا اگر تمام این قوم را بکشی، آن مردمی که نام ترا شنیده اند، خواهند گفت:

¹⁶‘Because Yahweh was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.’

¹⁶«چون خداوند نتوانست این قوم را به این سرزمین که وعدۀ مالکیت آن را به آن ها داده بود برساند، مجبور شد که آن ها را در بیابان بکشد.»

¹⁷Now please let the power of the Lord The word translated “Lord” is “Adonai.” be great, according as you have spoken, saying,

¹⁷بدربار تو زاری می کنم که قدرت خود را با بخشیدن گناهان ما نشان بدهی، زیرا تو به ما وعده دادی و فرمودی:

¹⁸‘Yahweh is slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and disobedience; and that will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation.’

¹⁸«بزودی خشم نمی گیرم و محبت من بی پایان است. گناه و خطای شما را می بخشم، اما به هیچوجه گناهکار را بدون سزا نمی گذارم. بخاطر گناه پدران، فرزندان شان را تا نسل سوم و چهارم جزا می دهم.»

¹⁹Please pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your loving kindness, and according as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”

¹⁹پس از حضور تو التماس می کنم که از روی رحمت بی پایانت گناهان این مردم را ببخشی، چنانچه از همان زمانی که مصر را ترک کردند و تا حال بارها گناهان شان را بخشیده ای.»

²⁰Yahweh said, “I have pardoned according to your word:

²⁰آنگاه خداوند فرمود: «چون تو از من خواهش کردی، من آن ها را بخشیدم،

²¹but in very deed, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of Yahweh;

²¹اما به حیات خود و بحضور پُرجلالم که زمین را پُر کرده است قسم می خورم که هیچکدام از آنهائی را که جلال و معجزات مرا در مصر و همچنین در بیابان دیده اند و بازهم از من بی اطاعتی کردند و مرا مورد آزمایش قرار دادند،

²²because all those men who have seen my glory, and my signs, which I worked in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tempted me these ten times, and have not listened to my voice;

²²روی آن سرزمینی را که به پدران شان وعدۀ مالکیت آن را داده ام نخواهند دید.

²³surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who despised me see it:

²³ولی بندۀ من، کالیب با آن ها فرق دارد. او همیشه و از صمیم دل فرمان مرا بجا آورده است، بنابران، او را به همان سرزمینی که برای مطالعه اش رفته بود، می برم و اولادۀ او را مالک آن می سازم.

²⁴but my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him will I bring into the land into which he went; and his seed shall possess it.

²⁴حالا چون عمالیقیان و کنعانیان در دره ها سکونت دارند، پس بهتر است که برگردید و از راه بحیرۀ احمر به بیابان بروید.»

²⁵Now the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the valley: tomorrow turn, and go into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea or, Sea of Reeds .”

²⁵بعد خداوند به موسی و هارون فرمود: «تا بکی این مردم شریر از من شکایت می کنند؟ من بارها شکایت این قوم را شنیده ام.

²⁶Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

²⁶پس به آن ها بگو: خداوند به حیات خود قسم می خورد که همان بلا را که از آن می ترسیدید بر سر تان می آورم.

²⁷“How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, that murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.

²⁷اجساد تان در این بیابان پوسیده می شوند. از تمام اشخاص بیست ساله و بالا تر تان یکنفر هم زنده نمی ماند، زیرا که از من شکایت کردید.

²⁸Tell them, ‘As I live, says Yahweh, surely as you have spoken in my ears, so will I do to you:

²⁸بغیر از کالیب، پسر یَفُنه و یوشع، پسر نون هیچکدام شان به آن سرزمین موعود قدم نمی گذارد.

²⁹your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and all who were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have murmured against me,

²⁹همچنان کودکان تان را که شما گفتید اسیر ساکنین آن سرزمین می شوند، بسلامتی به آنجائی که شما آن را رد کردید، می رسانم.

³⁰surely you shall not come into the land, concerning which I swore that I would make you dwell therein, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

³⁰اما جنازه های شما در این بیابان می افتند.

³¹But your little ones, that you said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which you have rejected.

³¹فرزندان تان بخاطر بی ایمانی شان برای چهل سال چوپانی می کنند تا که آخرین نفر تان در بیابان بمیرد.

³²But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.

³²در مقابل هر روزی که نمایندگان شما در آن سرزمین مطالعه کردند یکسال جزا می بینید، یعنی مدت چهل سال در بیابان سرگردان می باشید. و به این ترتیب، جزای نافرمانی خود را می بینید تا بدانید که بی اطاعتی از من چه نتیجه ای دارد.

³³Your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your prostitution, until your dead bodies be consumed in the wilderness.

³³و شما ای قوم شریر، که به مخالفت من برخاسته اید، در بیابان می میرید. این گفتار من که خداوند هستم می باشد.»

³⁴After the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, you will bear your iniquities, even forty years, and you will know my alienation.’

³⁴آن کسانی که برای بررسی به کنعان رفته بودند و با شایعات بد مردم را به وحشت انداخته آن ها را برضد خداوند تحریک نمودند، در اثر بلائی که خداوند بر سر شان آورد همه هلاک شدند.

³⁵I, Yahweh, have spoken, surely this will I do to all this evil congregation, who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.”

³⁵از بین آن ها تنها یوشع، پسر نون و کالیب، پسر یَفُنه زنده ماندند.

³⁶The men, whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up an evil report against the land,

³⁶موسی آنچه را که خداوند فرموده بود به اطلاع مردم رساند و آن ها بسیار گریه کردند.

³⁷even those men who brought up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before Yahweh.

³⁷روز دیگر، صبح وقت برخاستند و بسر کوه رفتند و گفتند: «ما حاضر و آماده هستیم که به سرزمین موعود برویم. ما به گناه خود اعتراف می کنیم.»

³⁸But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, remained alive of those men who went to spy out the land.

³⁸موسی به آن ها گفت: «شما با این کار تان از فرمان خداوند سرپیچی می کنید، اما موفق نمی شوید.

³⁹Moses told these words to all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.

³⁹شما نباید به آنجا بروید، زیرا خداوند به شما کمک نمی کند و دشمن، شما را شکست می دهد.

⁴⁰They rose up early in the morning, and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, “Behold, we are here, and will go up to the place which Yahweh has promised: for we have sinned.”

⁴⁰وقتی با عمالیقیان و کنعانیان روبرو شوید با شمشیر آن ها بقتل می رسید. چون شما از پیروی خداوند دست کشیده اید، بنابران خداوند با شما نیست.»

⁴¹Moses said, “Why now do you disobey the commandment of Yahweh, since it shall not prosper?

⁴¹اما آن ها به حرف موسی گوش ندادند و باوجودیکه صندوق پیمان خداوند و موسی از اردوگاه حرکت نکرده بودند، آن ها رهسپار سرزمین موعود شدند.آنگاه عمالیقیان و کنعانی های ساکن کوهستان به مقابل شان پائین آمدند و آن ها را شکست دادند و تا حُرمه تعقیب کردند.

⁴²Don’t go up, for Yahweh isn’t among you; that you not be struck down before your enemies.

⁴²آنگاه عمالیقیان و کنعانی های ساکن کوهستان به مقابل شان پائین آمدند و آن ها را شکست دادند و تا حُرمه تعقیب کردند.

⁴³For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and you shall fall by the sword: because you are turned back from following Yahweh, therefore Yahweh will not be with you.”

⁴⁴But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and Moses, didn’t depart out of the camp.

⁴⁵Then the Amalekite came down, and the Canaanite who lived in that mountain, and struck them and beat them down, even to Hormah.
