¹When you sit to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before you;

¹وقتی با شخصی مهمی غذا می خوری، بخاطر داشته باش که با چه کسی نشسته ای.

²put a knife to your throat, if you are a man given to appetite.

²اگر شخص پُرخوری هستی، کارد را بر گلوی خود بگذار

³Don’t be desirous of his dainties, since they are deceitful food.

³و حریص غذاهای لذیذ او نباش، زیرا ممکن است ترا فریب بدهد.

⁴Don’t weary yourself to be rich. In your wisdom, show restraint.

⁴عاقل باش و برای کسب ثروت، خود را خسته نکن،

⁵Why do you set your eyes on that which is not? For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky.

⁵زیرا ثروت پایدار نیست و مانند عقاب می پرد و ناپدید می شود.

⁶Don’t eat the food of him who has a stingy eye, and don’t crave his delicacies:

⁶از خوان شخص خسیس غذا نخور و برای طعام های لذیذ او حریص نباش،

⁷for as he thinks about the cost, so he is. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, but his heart is not with you.

⁷زیرا او حساب هرچه را که بخوری در فکر خود نگاه می دارد. او تعارف می کند و می گوید: «بخور و بنوش»، اما این را از صمیم دل نمی گوید.

⁸The morsel which you have eaten you shall vomit up, and lose your good words.

⁸لقمه ای را که خورده ای استفراغ خواهی کرد و تشکرات تو برباد خواهند رفت.

⁹Don’t speak in the ears of a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of your words.

⁹آدم احمق را نصیحت نکن، زیرا او سخنان حکیمانۀ ترا بی اهمیت می شمارد.

¹⁰Don’t move the ancient boundary stone. Don’t encroach on the fields of the fatherless:

¹⁰سرحد مُلک خود را که از قدیم تعیین شده تغییر نده و زمین یتیمان را بزور نگیر،

¹¹for their Defender is strong. He will plead their case against you.

¹¹زیرا خداوند «حامی» آن ها باقدرت است و به داد آن ها می رسد.

¹²Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to the words of knowledge.

¹²وقتی معلم‏ ترا تعلیم می دهد، از صمیم دل به سخنان آموزندۀ آنها‏ گوش بده.

¹³Don’t withhold correction from a child. If you punish him with the rod, he will not die.

¹³از تأدیب کردن فرزند خویش کوتاهی نکن، زیرا تنبیه او را نمی کشد،

¹⁴Punish him with the rod, and save his soul from Sheol Sheol is the place of the dead. .

¹⁴بلکه جان او را از هلاکت نجات می دهد.

¹⁵My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad, even mine:

¹⁵فرزندم، اگر حکمت بیآموزی، دل من شاد می شود،

¹⁶yes, my heart will rejoice, when your lips speak what is right.

¹⁶و هنگامی که سخن راست بگوئی تمام وجودم به وجد می آید.

¹⁷Don’t let your heart envy sinners; but rather fear Yahweh all the day long.

¹⁷به بدکاران حسادت نورز، بلکه آرزوی تو اطاعت از خداوند باشد،

¹⁸Indeed surely there is a future hope, and your hope will not be cut off.

¹⁸زیرا در اینصورت آیندۀ خوبی خواهی داشت و امید تو برباد نخواهد رفت.

¹⁹Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path!

¹⁹فرزندم، عاقل باش و به سخنانم گوش بده. در راه راست قدم بردار

²⁰Don’t be among ones drinking too much wine, or those who gorge themselves on meat:

²⁰و با مردم شرابخور و شکم پرست معاشرت نکن،

²¹for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor; and drowsiness clothes them in rags.

²¹زیرا کسانی که کارشان فقط خوردن و خوابیدن است، فقیر و محتاج می شوند.

²²Listen to your father who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother when she is old.

²²به نصیحت پدرت که ترا به وجود آورده است، گوش بده و مادرت را هنگامی که پیر می شود، خوار نشمار.

²³Buy the truth, and don’t sell it. Get wisdom, discipline, and understanding.

²³در پی حقیقت باش و حکمت و ادب و دانش را کسب کن و به هیچ قیمتی آن ها را از دست نده.

²⁴The father of the righteous has great joy. Whoever fathers a wise child delights in him.

²⁴فرزند راستکار و دانا باش تا باعث خوشی و خوشنودی پدر و مادرت شوی.

²⁵Let your father and your mother be glad! Let her who bore you rejoice!

²⁵فرزندم، سخنان مرا بشنو و زندگی مرا سرمشق خود قرار ده.

²⁶My son, give me your heart; and let your eyes keep in my ways.

²⁶بدان که زن بدکاره دام خطرناکی است.

²⁷For a prostitute is a deep pit; and a wayward wife is a narrow well.

²⁷او مانند راهزن در کمین قربانی های خود می نشیند و به تعداد مردم خیانتکار می افزاید.

²⁸Yes, she lies in wait like a robber, and increases the unfaithful among men.

²⁸مصیبت و بدبختی نصیب چه کسی می شود؟ آن کیست که همیشه جنگ و دعوا برپا می کند، بی جهت زخمی می شود و چشمانش تار می گردند؟

²⁹Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?

²⁹کسی که دایم شراب می خورد و بدنبال میگساری می رود.

³⁰Those who stay long at the wine; those who go to seek out mixed wine.

³⁰پس فریفتۀ شراب گلگون نشو که در پیاله به تو چشمک می زند و بعد آهسته از گلویت پائین می رود،

³¹Don’t look at the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly.

³¹در آخر، مثل مار کشنده ترا نیش می زند و مانند کفچه مار ترا می گزد.

³²In the end, it bites like a snake, and poisons like a viper.

³²چشمانت چیزهای عجیب و غریب می بینند و گرفتار وهم و خیال می گردی.

³³Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will imagine confusing things.

³³مانند کسی می شوی که در بحر خوابیده و با امواج آن دست و پنجه نرم می کند.می گوئی: «مرا زدند، اما دردی را احساس نمی کنم. چه وقت به هوش می آیم تا یک پیالۀ دیگر بنوشم؟»

³⁴Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the midst of the sea, or as he who lies on top of the rigging:

³⁴می گوئی: «مرا زدند، اما دردی را احساس نمی کنم. چه وقت به هوش می آیم تا یک پیالۀ دیگر بنوشم؟»

³⁵“They hit me, and I was not hurt! They beat me, and I don’t feel it! When will I wake up? I can do it again. I can find another.”
