¹Don’t boast about tomorrow; for you don’t know what a day may bring forth.

¹دربارۀ فردایت با غرور صحبت نکن، زیرا نمی دانی که فردا چه پیش خواهد آمد.

²Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.

²هرگز از خودت تعریف نکن، بگذار دیگران از تو تعریف کنند.

³A stone is heavy, and sand is a burden; but a fool’s provocation is heavier than both.

³حمل بار سنگ و ریگ سخت است، اما تحمل سختی هائی که یک شخص احمق ایجاد می کند، از آن هم سخت تر است.

⁴Wrath is cruel, and anger is overwhelming; but who is able to stand before jealousy?

⁴حسادت خطرناکتر و بی رحمتر از خشم و غضب است.

⁵Better is open rebuke than hidden love.

⁵سرزنش آشکار از محبت پنهان بهتر است.

⁶Faithful are the wounds of a friend; although the kisses of an enemy are profuse.

⁶زخم دوست بهتر از بوسۀ دشمن است.

⁷A full soul loathes a honeycomb; but to a hungry soul, every bitter thing is sweet.

⁷شکم سیر حتی از عسل کراهت دارد، اما برای شکم گرسنه هر چیزِ تلخ، شیرین است.

⁸As a bird that wanders from her nest, so is a man who wanders from his home.

⁸کسی که خانۀ خود را ترک می کند، همچون پرنده ای است که از آشیانۀ خود آواره شده باشد.

⁹Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart; so does earnest counsel from a man’s friend.

⁹مشورۀ صمیمانۀ یک دوست همچون عطری خوشبو دلپذیر است.

¹⁰Don’t forsake your friend and your father’s friend. Don’t go to your brother’s house in the day of your disaster: better is a neighbor who is near than a distant brother.

¹⁰دوست خود و دوست والدینت را هرگز ترک نکن، و وقتی که در سختی هستی، بسراغ خویشاوندانت نرو. همسایۀ نزدیک از خویشاوندان دور بهتر است.

¹¹Be wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart, then I can answer my tormentor.

¹¹فرزندم، حکمت بیآموز و دل مرا شاد کن تا بتوانم جواب کسانی را که سرزنشم می کنند، بدهم.

¹²A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge; but the simple pass on, and suffer for it.

¹²شخص زیرک خطر را می بیند و از آن اجتناب می کند، اما آدم جاهل بسوی آن می رود و خود را گرفتار می سازد.

¹³Take his garment when he puts up collateral for a stranger. Hold it for a wayward woman!

¹³از کسی که پیش تو ضامن شخص بیگانه ای می شود، گرو بگیر.

¹⁴He who blesses his neighbor with a loud voice early in the morning, it will be taken as a curse by him.

¹⁴اگر صبح وقت با دعای خیر دوستت را از خواب بیدار کنی، دعای تو همچون لعنت خواهد بود.

¹⁵A continual dropping on a rainy day and a contentious wife are alike:

¹⁵چکیدن دائمی آب در روز بارانی و زن ستیزه جو مثل هم هستند.

¹⁶restraining her is like restraining the wind, or like grasping oil in his right hand.

¹⁶هر که بخواهد با او مقابله کند، مثل کسی است که بخواهد مانع وزیدن باد گردد و یا اینکه روغن را در دست خود نگهدارد.

¹⁷Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend’s countenance.

¹⁷همانطوری که آهن، آهن را تیز می کند، دوست نیز شخصیت دوست خود را اصلاح می کند.

¹⁸Whoever tends the fig tree shall eat its fruit. He who looks after his master shall be honored.

¹⁸هر که از درخت انجیر نگهداری کند، از میوه اش هم خواهد خورد، و هر کسی که به آقای خود خدمت کند، عزت می یابد.

¹⁹As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man.

¹⁹همانطوری که انسان در آب، انعکاس روی خود را می بیند، در قلب دیگران نیز انعکاس شخصیت خود را مشاهده می کند.

²⁰ Sheol Sheol is the place of the dead. and Abaddon are never satisfied; and a man’s eyes are never satisfied.

²⁰همانطوری که دنیای مردگان از بلعیدن زندگان سیر نمی شود، خواهشهای انسان هم هرگز ارضا نمی گردند.

²¹The crucible is for silver, and the furnace for gold; but man is refined by his praise.

²¹طلا و نقره را بوسیلۀ آتش می آزمایند، اما انسان را از عکس العملش در برابر تعریف و تمجید دیگران می توان شناخت.

²²Though you grind a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with grain, yet his foolishness will not be removed from him.

²²اگر شخص احمق را در هاوَن هم بکوبی، حماقتش از او جدا نمی شود.

²³Know well the state of your flocks, and pay attention to your herds:

²³مال و دارائی زود از بین می رود و تاج و تخت پادشاه تا ابد برای اولادۀ او باقی نمی ماند. پس تو با دقت از گله و رمه ات مواظبت کن،

²⁴for riches are not forever, nor does even the crown endure to all generations.

²⁴زیرا وقتی بیده چیده می شود و محصول تازه ببار می آید و علف کوهستان جمع آوری می شود،

²⁵The hay is removed, and the new growth appears, the grasses of the hills are gathered in.

²⁵آنگاه از پشم گوسفندانت لباس تهیه خواهی کرد، از فروش بزهایت زمین خواهی خریدو از شیر بقیۀ بزهایت تو و خانواده و کنیزانت سیر خواهید شد.

²⁶The lambs are for your clothing, and the goats are the price of a field.

²⁶و از شیر بقیۀ بزهایت تو و خانواده و کنیزانت سیر خواهید شد.

²⁷There will be plenty of goats’ milk for your food, for your family’s food, and for the nourishment of your servant girls.
