¹It happened in the days when the judges judged, that there was a famine in the land. A certain man of Bethlehem Judah went to live in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.

¹در زمانهای قدیم، در ایامی که قوم اسرائیل هنوز پادشاهی نداشت، قحطی سختی در آن سرزمین بروز کرد. به همین دلیل، شخصی به نام اَلیمَلَک که از قبیلۀ افراته بود و در بیت لحم یهودیه زندگی می کرد، به اتفاق همسر خود نعومی و دو پسرش مَحلُون و کِلیون به سرزمین موآب کوچ کردند تا در آنجا زندگی کنند.

²The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem Judah. They came into the country of Moab, and continued there.

²در این احوال، اَلیمَلَک مُرد و نعومی با دو پسر خود

³Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died; and she was left, and her two sons.

³که با دختران موابی بنامهای اُورفه و روت ازدواج کرده بودند، تنها ماند. در حدود ده سال بعد از آن

⁴They took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they lived there about ten years.

⁴مَحلُون و کِلیون نیز درگذشتند و نعومی بدون شوهر و فرزند ماند.

⁵Mahlon and Chilion both died, and the woman was bereaved of her two children and of her husband.

⁵در این موقع، نعومی شنید که خداوند قوم برگزیدۀ خود را با محصول فراوان برکت داده است. از اینرو، او تصمیم گرفت تا همراه دو عروس خود موآب را ترک کند.

⁶Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that Yahweh “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “LORD” (all caps) in other translations. had visited his people in giving them bread.

⁶پس آن ها براه افتادند، اما قبل از حرکت،

⁷She went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah.

⁷نعومی به دو عروس خود گفت: «شما به خانۀ خود به نزد مادران تان برگردید. امیدوارم خداوند در عوض خوبی هائی که به من و به فرزندان من کردید، شما را برکت و پاداش دهد،

⁸Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return each of you to her mother’s house: Yahweh deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead, and with me.

⁸و دعای من این است که هردوی شما بتوانید دوباره ازدواج کنید و خانواده تشکیل بدهید.» پس نعومی آن ها را بوسید و از آن ها خداحافظی نمود، اما آن ها گریه کنان

⁹Yahweh grant you that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband.” Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voice, and wept.

⁹به او گفتند: «نه، ما همراه تو و به پیش قوم تو خواهیم رفت.»

¹⁰They said to her, “No, but we will return with you to your people.”

¹⁰نعومی در جواب گفت: «دخترانم، شما باید برگردید. چرا می خواهید همراه من باشید؟ آیا فکر می کنید که من می توانم باز صاحب پسرانی شوم که با شما ازدواج کنند؟

¹¹Naomi said, “Go back, my daughters. Why do you want to go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?

¹¹به خانۀ خود بروید، چون من پیرتر از آن هستم که بتوانم دوباره ازدواج کنم. حتی اگر چنین چیزی امکان می داشت و همین امشب ازدواج می کردم و صاحب دو پسر می شدم

¹²Go back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, ‘I have hope,’ if I should even have a husband tonight, and should also bear sons;

¹²آیا شما می توانید صبر کنید تا آن ها بزرگ شوند؟ آیا این امید مانع ازدواج شما با دیگران نخواهد شد؟ نه، دخترانم، شما می دانید که این غیر ممکن است. خداوند مخالف من است و از این بابت برای شما بسیار متأسفم.»

¹³would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from having husbands? No, my daughters, for it grieves me much for your sakes, for the hand of Yahweh has gone out against me.”

¹³آن ها باز به گریه افتادند. بعد از آن اُورفه مادر شوهر خود را بوسیده از او خداحافظی کرد و به خانۀ خویش برگشت. اما روت از او جدا نشد.

¹⁴They lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth joined with her.

¹⁴از اینرو نعومی به او گفت: «روت، زن برادر شوهرت به نزد قوم خود و خدایان خویش برگشته است. تو هم همراه او برو.»

¹⁵She said, “Behold, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people, and to her god. Follow your sister-in-law.”

¹⁵اما روت در جواب گفت: «از من نخواه که ترا ترک کنم. اجازه بده همراه تو باشم. هر جا تو بروی من هم خواهم رفت و هر جا تو زندگی کنی من هم در آنجا زندگی خواهم کرد. قوم تو، قوم من و خدای تو، خدای من خواهد بود.

¹⁶Ruth said, “Don’t entreat me to leave you, and to return from following after you, for where you go, I will go; and where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim.” my God;

¹⁶هر جا تو بمیری من هم خواهم مرد و همان جا دفن خواهم شد. خداوند مرا جزا دهد اگر چیزی جز مرگ مرا از تو جدا سازد.»

¹⁷where you die, will I die, and there will I be buried. Yahweh do so to me, and more also, if anything but death part you and me.”

¹⁷وقتی نعومی دید روت مصمم است که همراه او برود دیگر چیزی نگفت.

¹⁸When she saw that she was steadfastly minded to go with her, she left off speaking to her.

¹⁸آن ها به راه خود ادامه دادند تا به بیت لحم رسیدند. وقتی آن ها وارد شهر شدند مردم از دیدن آن ها به هیجان آمدند و زنان با تعجب می گفتند: «آیا این زن واقعاً همان نعومی است؟»

¹⁹So they two went until they came to Bethlehem. It happened, when they had come to Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they asked, “Is this Naomi?”

¹⁹نعومی در جواب گفت: «مرا دیگر نعومی نخوانید، مرا ماره صدا کنید، چون خدای قادر مطلق زندگی مرا تلخ و غمناک ساخته است.

²⁰She said to them, “Don’t call me Naomi. Call me Mara; for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.

²⁰وقتی اینجا را ترک کردم صاحب همه چیز بودم، اما خداوند مرا دست خالی به اینجا برگردانیده است. چرا مرا نعومی صدا می کنید، در حالیکه خداوند قادر مطلق مرا دچار چنین مصیبت و زحمتی کرده است؟»به این ترتیب، نعومی به همراه روت، عروس موابی خود، از موآب مراجعت کرد. وقتی آن ها به بیت لحم رسیدند تازه فصل دروِ جو شروع شده بود.

²¹I went out full, and Yahweh has brought me home again empty; why do you call me Naomi, since Yahweh has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?”

²¹به این ترتیب، نعومی به همراه روت، عروس موابی خود، از موآب مراجعت کرد. وقتی آن ها به بیت لحم رسیدند تازه فصل دروِ جو شروع شده بود.

²²So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
