1Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of livestock: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that behold, the place was a place for livestock;
1ומקנה רב היה לבני ראובן ולבני גד עצום מאד ויראו את ארץ יעזר ואת ארץ גלעד והנה המקום מקום מקנה׃
2the children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the princes of the congregation, saying,
2ויבאו בני גד ובני ראובן ויאמרו אל משה ואל אלעזר הכהן ואל נשיאי העדה לאמר׃
3“Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Sebam, and Nebo, and Beon,
3עטרות ודיבן ויעזר ונמרה וחשבון ואלעלה ושבם ונבו ובען׃
4the land which Yahweh struck before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock; and your servants have livestock.”
4הארץ אשר הכה יהוה לפני עדת ישראל ארץ מקנה הוא ולעבדיך מקנה׃
5They said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession; don’t bring us over the Jordan.”
5ויאמרו אם מצאנו חן בעיניך יתן את הארץ הזאת לעבדיך לאחזה אל תעברנו את הירדן׃
6Moses said to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, “Shall your brothers go to the war, and shall you sit here?
6ויאמר משה לבני גד ולבני ראובן האחיכם יבאו למלחמה ואתם תשבו פה׃
7Why do you discourage the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which Yahweh has given them?
7ולמה תנואון את לב בני ישראל מעבר אל הארץ אשר נתן להם יהוה׃
8Your fathers did so when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land.
8כה עשו אבתיכם בשלחי אתם מקדש ברנע לראות את הארץ׃
9For when they went up to the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which Yahweh had given them.
9ויעלו עד נחל אשכול ויראו את הארץ ויניאו את לב בני ישראל לבלתי בא אל הארץ אשר נתן להם יהוה׃
10Yahweh’s anger was kindled in that day, and he swore, saying,
10ויחר אף יהוה ביום ההוא וישבע לאמר׃
11‘Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:
11אם יראו האנשים העלים ממצרים מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה את האדמה אשר נשבעתי לאברהם ליצחק וליעקב כי לא מלאו אחרי׃
12except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun; because they have followed Yahweh completely.’
12בלתי כלב בן יפנה הקנזי ויהושע בן נון כי מלאו אחרי יהוה׃
13Yahweh’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander back and forth in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, who had done evil in the sight of Yahweh, was consumed.
13ויחר אף יהוה בישראל וינעם במדבר ארבעים שנה עד תם כל הדור העשה הרע בעיני יהוה׃
14“Behold, you have risen up in your fathers’ place, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of Yahweh toward Israel.
14והנה קמתם תחת אבתיכם תרבות אנשים חטאים לספות עוד על חרון אף יהוה אל ישראל׃
15For if you turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and you will destroy all this people.”
15כי תשובן מאחריו ויסף עוד להניחו במדבר ושחתם לכל העם הזה׃
16They came near to him, and said, “We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones:
16ויגשו אליו ויאמרו גדרת צאן נבנה למקננו פה וערים לטפנו׃
17but we ourselves will be ready armed to go before the children of Israel, until we have brought them to their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
17ואנחנו נחלץ חשים לפני בני ישראל עד אשר אם הביאנם אל מקומם וישב טפנו בערי המבצר מפני ישבי הארץ׃
18We will not return to our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance.
18לא נשוב אל בתינו עד התנחל בני ישראל איש נחלתו׃
19For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan, and forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side of the Jordan eastward.”
19כי לא ננחל אתם מעבר לירדן והלאה כי באה נחלתנו אלינו מעבר הירדן מזרחה׃
20Moses said to them, “If you will do this thing, if you will arm yourselves to go before Yahweh to the war,
20ויאמר אליהם משה אם תעשון את הדבר הזה אם תחלצו לפני יהוה למלחמה׃
21and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before Yahweh, until he has driven out his enemies from before him,
21ועבר לכם כל חלוץ את הירדן לפני יהוה עד הורישו את איביו מפניו׃
22and the land is subdued before Yahweh; then afterward you shall return, and be guiltless towards Yahweh, and towards Israel; and this land shall be to you for a possession before Yahweh.
22ונכבשה הארץ לפני יהוה ואחר תשבו והייתם נקיים מיהוה ומישראל והיתה הארץ הזאת לכם לאחזה לפני יהוה׃
23“But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against Yahweh; and be sure your sin will find you out.
23ואם לא תעשון כן הנה חטאתם ליהוה ודעו חטאתכם אשר תמצא אתכם׃
24Build cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which has proceeded out of your mouth.”
24בנו לכם ערים לטפכם וגדרת לצנאכם והיצא מפיכם תעשו׃
25The children of Gad and the children of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying, “Your servants will do as my lord commands.
25ויאמר בני גד ובני ראובן אל משה לאמר עבדיך יעשו כאשר אדני מצוה׃
26Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock, shall be there in the cities of Gilead;
26טפנו נשינו מקננו וכל בהמתנו יהיו שם בערי הגלעד׃
27but your servants will pass over, every man who is armed for war, before Yahweh to battle, as my lord says.”
27ועבדיך יעברו כל חלוץ צבא לפני יהוה למלחמה כאשר אדני דבר׃
28So Moses commanded concerning them to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers’ households of the tribes of the children of Israel.
28ויצו להם משה את אלעזר הכהן ואת יהושע בן נון ואת ראשי אבות המטות לבני ישראל׃
29Moses said to them, “If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over the Jordan, every man who is armed to battle, before Yahweh, and the land shall be subdued before you; then you shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession:
29ויאמר משה אלהם אם יעברו בני גד ובני ראובן אתכם את הירדן כל חלוץ למלחמה לפני יהוה ונכבשה הארץ לפניכם ונתתם להם את ארץ הגלעד לאחזה׃
30but if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.”
30ואם לא יעברו חלוצים אתכם ונאחזו בתככם בארץ כנען׃
31The children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, “As Yahweh has said to your servants, so will we do.
31ויענו בני גד ובני ראובן לאמר את אשר דבר יהוה אל עבדיך כן נעשה׃
32We will pass over armed before Yahweh into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us beyond the Jordan.”
32נחנו נעבר חלוצים לפני יהוה ארץ כנען ואתנו אחזת נחלתנו מעבר לירדן׃
33Moses gave to them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, according to its cities and borders, even the cities of the surrounding land.
33ויתן להם משה לבני גד ולבני ראובן ולחצי שבט מנשה בן יוסף את ממלכת סיחן מלך האמרי ואת ממלכת עוג מלך הבשן הארץ לעריה בגבלת ערי הארץ סביב׃
34The children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,
34ויבנו בני גד את דיבן ואת עטרת ואת ערער׃
35and Atrothshophan, and Jazer, and Jogbehah,
35ואת עטרת שופן ואת יעזר ויגבהה׃
36and Beth Nimrah, and Beth Haran: fortified cities, and folds for sheep.
36ואת בית נמרה ואת בית הרן ערי מבצר וגדרת צאן׃
37The children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kiriathaim,
37ובני ראובן בנו את חשבון ואת אלעלא ואת קריתים׃
38and Nebo, and Baal Meon, (their names being changed), and Sibmah: and they gave other names to the cities which they built.
38ואת נבו ואת בעל מעון מוסבת שם ואת שבמה ויקראו בשמת את שמות הערים אשר בנו׃
39The children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were therein.
39וילכו בני מכיר בן מנשה גלעדה וילכדה ויורש את האמרי אשר בה׃
40Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh; and he lived therein.
40ויתן משה את הגלעד למכיר בן מנשה וישב בה׃
41Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its towns, and called them Havvoth Jair.
41ויאיר בן מנשה הלך וילכד את חותיהם ויקרא אתהן חות יאיר׃
42Nobah went and took Kenath, and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.
42ונבח הלך וילכד את קנת ואת בנתיה ויקרא לה נבח בשמו׃
