¹The sons of the prophets said to Elisha, “See now, the place where we dwell before you is too small for us.

¹ روزی گروهی از انبیا به الیشع گفتند: «جایی که ما زیر نظر تو در آن زندگی می‌کنیم برای ما کوچک است.

²Please let us go to the Jordan, and every man take a beam from there, and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell.” He answered, “Go!”

² اجازه بدهید ما به رود اردن برویم و الوار جمع کنیم و خانه‌ای برای خود در آنجا بسازیم تا در آن زندگی کنیم.» الیشع پاسخ داد: «بسیار خوب.»

³One said, “Please be pleased to go with your servants.” He answered, “I will go.”

³ آنگاه یکی از ایشان گفت: «خواهش می‌کنم همراه خدمتکارانت بیا» و او پاسخ داد: «خواهم آمد.»

⁴So he went with them. When they came to the Jordan, they cut down wood.

⁴ پس الیشع با ایشان رفت. هنگامی‌که آنها به رود اردن آمدند، مشغول بریدن درختان شدند.

⁵But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water. Then he cried, and said, “Alas, my master! For it was borrowed.”

⁵ امّا زمانی که یک نفر از ایشان درختی را می‌برید تیغهٔ تبرش در آب افتاد. او فریاد کرد و گفت: «ای سرورم، من این تبر را امانت گرفته بودم.»

⁶The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” He showed him the place. He cut down a stick, threw it in there, and made the iron float.

⁶ الیشع پرسید: «کجا افتاد؟» هنگامی‌که جایش را به او نشان داد، الیشع چوبی برید و در آنجا انداخت و تیغهٔ تبر به روی آب آمد.

⁷He said, “Take it.” So he put out his hand and took it.

⁷ الیشع گفت: «آن را بردار.» پس او دستش را دراز کرد و آن را برداشت.

⁸Now the king of Syria was warring against Israel; and he took counsel with his servants, saying, “My camp will be in such and such a place.”

⁸ پادشاه سوریه با اسرائیل در جنگ بود، با افسران خود مشورت کرد و محل اردوگاه را برگزید.

⁹The man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, “Beware that you not pass such a place; for the Syrians are coming down there.”

⁹ امّا الیشع برای پادشاه اسرائیل پیام فرستاد که «مواظب باشید و از این محل عبور نکنید، زیرا ارتش سوریه در آنجاست.»

¹⁰The king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of; and he saved himself there, not once nor twice.

¹⁰ پادشاه اسرائیل به افرادی که آنجا بودند، هشدار داد و آنها مراقب بودند. این رویداد چند بار تکرار شد.

¹¹The heart of the king of Syria was very troubled about this. He called his servants, and said to them, “Won’t you show me which of us is for the king of Israel?”

¹¹ به‌خاطر این موضوع فکر پادشاه سوریه بسیار آشفته گشت. او افسران خود را فراخواند و از ایشان پرسید: «چه کسی در میان شما طرفدار پادشاه اسرائیل است؟»

¹²One of his servants said, “No, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.”

¹² آنگاه یکی از افسران او گفت: «هیچ‌کس ای پادشاه. این الیشع، نبی اسرائیل است که آنچه را شما حتّی در اتاق خواب خود می‌گویید، به پادشاه اسرائیل می‌گوید.»

¹³He said, “Go and see where he is, that I may send and get him.” It was told him, saying, “Behold, he is in Dothan.”

¹³ او گفت: «بروید و ببینید که او کجاست تا من بفرستم او را دستگیر کنند.» به او گفتند که الیشع در دوتان است.

¹⁴Therefore he sent horses, chariots, and a great army there. They came by night, and surrounded the city.

¹⁴ پس او سواران و ارّابه‌ها و سپاه بزرگی به آنجا فرستاد. آنها در شب آمدند و شهر را محاصره کردند.

¹⁵When the servant of the man of God had risen early, and gone out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was around the city. His servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?”

¹⁵ صبحگاه، هنگامی‌که خادم الیشع برخاست و بیرون رفت و دید، سپاهی با اسبان و ارّابه‌ها شهر را محاصره کرده‌اند به الیشع گفت: «ای سرورم، چه باید کرد؟»

¹⁶He answered, “Don’t be afraid; for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

¹⁶ الیشع پاسخ داد: «نترس، تعداد کسانی‌که با ما هستند بیشتر از آنهاست.»

¹⁷Elisha prayed, and said, “Yahweh, please open his eyes, that he may see.” Yahweh opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire around Elisha.

¹⁷ آنگاه او دعا کرد و گفت: «ای خداوندا، چشمان او را باز کن تا ببیند.» خداوند دعای او را پاسخ داد و خدمتکار الیشع نگاه کرد و دید کوهها پر از اسبها و ارّابه‌های آتشین در اطراف الیشع هستند.

¹⁸When they came down to him, Elisha prayed to Yahweh, and said, “Please strike this people with blindness.” He struck them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.

¹⁸ هنگامی‌که سوریها حمله کردند، الیشع دعا کرد: «ای خداوند این مردان را کور کن.» خداوند پاسخ دعای او را داد و آنها را کور کرد.

¹⁹Elisha said to them, “This is not the way, neither is this the city. Follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom you seek.” He led them to Samaria.

¹⁹ الیشع به ایشان گفت: «راه این نیست و این شهری نیست که دنبال آن می‌گردید، مرا دنبال کنید و شما را نزد مردی که در جستجویش هستید خواهم برد.» او ایشان را به سامره برد.

²⁰It happened, when they had come into Samaria, that Elisha said, “Yahweh, open the eyes of these men, that they may see.” Yahweh opened their eyes, and they saw; and behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.

²⁰ پس از ورود به سامره الیشع بی‌درنگ دعا کرد و گفت: «خداوندا، چشمان ایشان را باز کن تا ببینند.» خداوند ایشان را بینا ساخت و دیدند که در سامره هستند.

²¹The king of Israel said to Elisha, when he saw them, “My father, shall I strike them? Shall I strike them?”

²¹ هنگامی‌که پادشاه اسرائیل ایشان را دید از الیشع پرسید: «ای پدر، آنها را بکشم؟ آنها را بکشم؟»

²²He answered, “You shall not strike them. Would you strike those whom you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.”

²² الیشع پاسخ داد: «تو آنها را نخواهی کشت. آیا کسانی را که با شمشیر و کمان اسیر می‌کنی، می‌کشی؟ به آنها آب و نان بدهید تا بخورند و بنوشند و نزد سرور خود بازگردند.»

²³He prepared great feast for them. When they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. The bands of Syria stopped raiding the land of Israel.

²³ پس او جشن بزرگی برای ایشان برگزار کرد و هنگامی‌که خوردند و نوشیدند ایشان را روانه ساخت و ایشان نزد سرور خود بازگشتند. ارتش سوریه پس از آن به خاک اسرائیل حمله نکرد.

²⁴It happened after this, that Benhadad king of Syria gathered all his army, and went up and besieged Samaria.

²⁴ پس از مدّتی بنهدد، پادشاه سوریه، تمام ارتش خود را گرد آورد و به سامره یورش برد و آنجا را محاصره کرد.

²⁵There was a great famine in Samaria. Behold, they besieged it, until a donkey’s head was sold for eighty pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a kab of dove’s dung for five pieces of silver.

²⁵ در اثر محاصره قحطی در شهر به حدّی بود که کلّهٔ الاغ، هشتاد تکهٔ نقره و ظرف کوچکی از فضلهٔ کبوتر، به پنج تکهٔ نقره به فروش می‌رسید.

²⁶As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried to him, saying, “Help, my lord, O king!”

²⁶ هنگامی‌که پادشاه اسرائیل روی دیوار شهر قدم می‌زد، زنی فریاد برآورد: «مرا کمک کنید ای سرور، ای پادشاه.»

²⁷He said, “If Yahweh doesn’t help you, from where could I help you? From of the threshing floor, or from the winepress?”

²⁷ او پاسخ داد: «اگر خداوند تو را کمک نکند، من چگونه می‌توانم تو را یاری کنم؟ از کدام خرمنگاه و چرخشت چیزی به تو بدهم؟

²⁸The king said to her, “What ails you?” She answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.’

²⁸ مشکل تو چیست؟» او پاسخ داد: «این زن به من گفت: 'پسرت را بده تا امروز او را بخوریم و فردا پسر مرا می‌خوریم.'

²⁹So we boiled my son, and ate him: and I said to her on the next day, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him;’ and she has hidden her son.”

²⁹ پس ما پسرم را پُختیم و خوردیم. روز بعد من به او گفتم پسرت را بده تا او را بخوریم، ولی او پسر خود را پنهان کرده است.»

³⁰It happened, when the king heard the words of the woman, that he tore his clothes (now he was passing by on the wall); and the people looked, and behold, he had sackcloth underneath on his flesh.

³⁰ چون پادشاه سخن زن را شنید جامهٔ خود را پاره کرد و مردمی که نزدیک دیوار بودند، دیدند که پادشاه در زیر لباس خود پلاس به تن داشت.

³¹Then he said, “God do so to me, and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stay on him this day.”

³¹ پادشاه گفت: «خداوند مرا بکشد، اگر تا پایان روز سر الیشع را از تنش جدا نکنم.»

³²But Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. Then the king sent a man from before him; but before the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, “Do you see how this son of a murderer has sent to take away my head? Behold, when the messenger comes, shut the door, and hold the door shut against him. Isn’t the sound of his master’s feet behind him?”

³² الیشع با بزرگان در خانهٔ خود نشسته بود که پادشاه قاصدی نزد او فرستاد. امّا قبل از اینکه قاصد برسد الیشع به بزرگان گفت: «می‌بینید که این قاتل کسی را فرستاده تا سر از تن من جدا کند؟ هنگامی‌که قاصد آمد در را ببندید و اجازه ندهید که داخل شود. پادشاه خودش پشت سر او خواهد آمد.» هنگامی‌که هنوز سخن می‌گفت، پادشاه نزد او آمد و گفت: «این بلا از طرف خداوند است، چرا باید بیشتر برای خداوند صبر کنم؟»

³³While he was still talking with them, behold, the messenger came down to him. Then he said, “Behold, this evil is from Yahweh. Why should I wait for Yahweh any longer?”

³³ هنگامی‌که هنوز سخن می‌گفت، پادشاه نزد او آمد و گفت: «این بلا از طرف خداوند است، چرا باید بیشتر برای خداوند صبر کنم؟»
