¹Elisha said, “Hear the word of Yahweh. Thus says Yahweh, ‘Tomorrow about this time a measure of fine flour will be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria.’”

¹ الیشع پاسخ داد: «کلام خداوند را بشنو، خداوند چنین می‌گوید: فردا در همین زمان در دروازه‌های سامره پنج کیلو از بهترین گندم یا ده کیلو جو را به قیمت یک تکهٔ نقره می‌توان خرید.»

²Then the captain on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said, “Behold, if Yahweh made windows in heaven, could this thing be?” He said, “Behold, you shall see it with your eyes, but shall not eat of it.”

² افسری که پادشاه بر دست او تکیه می‌کرد به مرد خدا گفت: «مگر خود خدا از آسمان دریچه‌ای بگشاید تا این وقایع روی دهند.» الیشع گفت: «تو با چشمان خود خواهی دید، امّا از آن نخواهی خورد.»

³Now there were four leprous men at the entrance of the gate. They said one to another, “Why do we sit here until we die?

³ چهار مرد جذامی در خارج دروازهٔ سامره بودند و به یکدیگر گفتند: «چرا اینجا بنشینیم تا بمیریم؟

⁴If we say, ‘We will enter into the city,’ then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there. If we sit still here, we also die. Now therefore come, and let us surrender to the army of the Syrians. If they save us alive, we will live; and if they kill us, we will only die.”

⁴ چه اینجا بمانیم یا داخل شهر بشویم، در هر صورت از گرسنگی خواهیم مرد. پس بیایید به اردوی سوریان برویم. اگر ما را زنده نگه‌دارند، زنده خواهیم ماند و اگر ما را بکشند، خواهیم مرد.»

⁵They rose up in the twilight, to go to the camp of the Syrians. When they had come to the outermost part of the camp of the Syrians, behold, there was no man there.

⁵ پس در شامگاه برخاستند تا به اردوی سوریان بروند، امّا هنگامی‌که در کنار اردوی سوریان رسیدند کسی در آنجا نبود.

⁶For the Lord The word translated “Lord” is “Adonai.” had made the army of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great army: and they said one to another, Behold, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come on us.

⁶ زیرا خداوند موجب شده بود تا ارتش سوریه صدای ارّابه‌ها و اسبها و ارتش بزرگی را بشنوند، پس آنها به یکدیگر گفتند: «پادشاه اسرائیل، پادشاهان حِتّیان و مصریان را به ضد ما اجیر کرده است تا با ما بجنگند.»

⁷Therefore they arose and fled in the twilight, and left their tents, and their horses, and their donkeys, even the camp as it was, and fled for their life.

⁷ بنابراین شامگاهان از ترس جان خود، همهٔ آنان گریختند و چادرها و اسبها و الاغها و اردوی خود را همان‌طور که بود، رها کردند.

⁸When these lepers came to the outermost part of the camp, they went into one tent, and ate and drink, and carried there silver, and gold, and clothing, and went and hid it. Then they came back, and entered into another tent, and carried there also, and went and hid it.

⁸ هنگامی‌که جذامیان کنار اردو رسیدند وارد چادری شدند و خوردند و نوشیدند و از آنجا طلا و نقره و لباس برداشتند و رفتند و آنها را پنهان کردند و بازگشتند و به چادر دیگری داخل شدند و از آن نیز بردند و پنهان کردند.

⁹Then they said one to another, “We aren’t doing right. This day is a day of good news, and we keep silent. If we wait until the morning light, punishment will overtake us. Now therefore come, let us go and tell the king’s household.”

⁹ آنگاه به یکدیگر گفتند: «کاری که ما می‌کنیم درست نیست. امروز روز خبر خوش است. اگر تا فردا صبر کنیم و خاموش باشیم مجازات خواهیم شد. پس بیایید تا برویم و به افسران پادشاه خبر دهیم.»

¹⁰So they came and called to the porter of the city; and they told them, saying, “We came to the camp of the Syrians, and, behold, there was no man there, neither voice of man, but the horses tied, and the donkeys tied, and the tents as they were.”

¹⁰ پس آنها رفتند و به دروازه‌بانهای شهر گفتند: «ما به اردوی سوریان رفتیم و کسی در آنجا دیده نمی‌شد. اسبها و الاغهای آنها بسته بودند و چادرهایشان دست نخورده بود.»

¹¹He called the porters; and they told it to the king’s household within.

¹¹ آنگاه دروازه‌بانها خبر را جار زدند و کاخ پادشاه را باخبر نمودند.

¹²The king arose in the night, and said to his servants, “I will now show you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we are hungry. Therefore are they gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the field, saying, ‘When they come out of the city, we shall take them alive, and get into the city.’”

¹² پادشاه در شب برخاست و به افسران خود گفت: «من به شما می‌گویم که سوری‌ها چه نقشه‌ای دارند، آنها می‌دانند که ما گرسنه هستیم. پس آنها در دشت پنهان شده‌اند و به این فکر هستند که ما از شهر خارج شویم و آنها ما را اسیر کنند و وارد شهر شوند.»

¹³One of his servants answered, “Please let some take five of the horses that remain, which are left in the city. Behold, they are like all the multitude of Israel who are left in it. Behold, they are like all the multitude of Israel who are consumed. Let us send and see.”

¹³ یکی از افسران او گفت: «در هر صورت مردم شهر محکوم به مرگ هستند، مانند آنانی که تا حالا مرده‌اند. اجازه بدهید مردانی با پنج راس اسبی که باقیمانده‌اند بفرستیم تا بدانیم که چه رخ داده است.»

¹⁴They took therefore two chariots with horses; and the king sent after the army of the Syrians, saying, “Go and see.”

¹⁴ ایشان مردانی برگزیدند و پادشاه آنها را با دستورالعمل در دو ارّابه فرستاد تا ببینند که بر سر ارتش سوریه چه آمده است.

¹⁵They went after them to the Jordan; and behold, all the way was full of garments and vessels, which the Syrians had cast away in their haste. The messengers returned, and told the king.

¹⁵ مردان تا رود اردن رفتند و در جاده لباس و وسایلی را که سوری‌ها در هنگام فرار بجا گذاشته بودند، دیدند. پس ایشان بازگشتند و به پادشاه گزارش دادند.

¹⁶The people went out, and plundered the camp of the Syrians. So a measure of fine flour was sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, according to the word of Yahweh.

¹⁶ مردم سامره با عجله بیرون آمدند و به اردوی سوری‌ها هجوم آوردند و آن را تاراج کردند و همان‌طور که خداوند فرموده بود، پنج کیلو از بهترین گندم یا ده کیلو از بهترین جو را به قیمت یک تکهٔ نقره فروختند.

¹⁷The king appointed the captain on whose hand he leaned to be in charge of the gate: and the people trod on him in the gate, and he died as the man of God had said, who spoke when the king came down to him.

¹⁷ پادشاه آن افسری را که بردست او تکیه می‌کرد، بر دروازه گماشت و او زیر پای مردم لگدمال شد و مُرد، همان‌طور که الیشع زمانی که پادشاه به دیدن او رفته بود، پیش‌گویی کرده بود.

¹⁸It happened, as the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, “Two measures of barley for a shekel, and a measure of fine flour for a shekel, shall be tomorrow about this time in the gate of Samaria”;

¹⁸ الیشع به پادشاه گفته بود روز بعد پنج کیلو از بهترین گندم یا ده کیلو از بهترین جو در سامره به قیمت یک تکهٔ نقره به فروش خواهد رفت.

¹⁹and that captain answered the man of God, and said, “Now, behold, if Yahweh should make windows in heaven, might such a thing be?” and he said, “Behold, you shall see it with your eyes, but shall not eat of it.”

¹⁹ امّا آن افسر به الیشع گفته بود: «مگر خود خدا از آسمان دریچه‌ای بگشاید تا این وقایع روی دهند.» الیشع گفته بود: «تو آن را با چشمان خود خواهی دید، امّا از آن نخواهی خورد.» پس برای او چنین رخ داد و مردم او را لگدکوب کردند و او در دروازهٔ شهر مُرد.
