¹Joshua the son of Nun secretly sent two men out of Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, including Jericho.” They went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and slept there.

¹ پس یوشع پسر نون، دو نفر جاسوس را محرمانه از اردوی اقاقیا به کنعان فرستاد و گفت: «بروید و وضعیّت و شرایط آنجا، مخصوصاً شهر اریحا را بررسی کنید.» آن دو رفتند و در آنجا، در خانهٔ زن فاحشه‌ای به نام راحاب، شب را به سر بردند.

²The king of Jericho was told, “Behold, men of the children of Israel came in here tonight to spy out the land.”

² به پادشاه اریحا خبر رسید که چند نفر اسرائیلی برای جاسوسی وارد سرزمین شده‌اند.

³The king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered into your house; for they have come to spy out all the land.”

³ پادشاه اریحا به راحاب پیغام فرستاده گفت: «مردانی که در خانهٔ تو هستند، جاسوس می‌‌باشند. آنها را به ما تحویل بده.»

⁴The woman took the two men and hid them. Then she said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I didn’t know where they came from.

⁴ امّا راحاب آن دو نفر را پنهان کرده گفت: «بلی آنها نزد من آمدند، ولی من نفهمیدم که از کجا آمده بودند.

⁵It happened about the time of the shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out. Where the men went, I don’t know. Pursue them quickly; for you will overtake them.”

⁵ ‌هنگام غروب آفتاب، پیش از آنکه دروازه‌های شهر بسته شود، اینجا را ترک کردند و نمی‌‌دانم به کجا رفتند. اکنون نیز اگر عجله کنید، می‌توانید آنها را دستگیر نمایید.»

⁶But she had brought them up to the roof, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order on the roof.

⁶ ‌امّا راحاب آنها را در پشت بام، زیر ساقهٔ الیاف کتان که در آنجا گذاشته بود، پنهان کرده بود.

⁷The men pursued them the way to the Jordan to the fords: and as soon as those who pursued them had gone out, they shut the gate.

⁷ ‌فرستادگان پادشاه تا نزدیک رود اردن به تعقیب جاسوسان رفتند. بعد از رفتن آنها، دروازه‌های شهر بسته شد.

⁸Before they had laid down, she came up to them on the roof;

⁸ پیش از آنکه جاسوسان بخوابند، راحاب به پشت بام رفت

⁹and she said to the men, “I know that Yahweh has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.

⁹ و به آنها گفت: «من می‌دانم که خداوند این سرزمین را به شما داده است. همهٔ مردم این سرزمین از شما می‌‌ترسند و هر وقت نام اسرائیل را می‌شنوند، به وحشت می‌افتند.

¹⁰For we have heard how Yahweh dried up the water of the Red Sea or, Sea of Reeds before you, when you came out of Egypt; and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and to Og, whom you utterly destroyed.

¹⁰ ‌ما شنیده‌ایم که وقتی از سرزمین مصر خارج می‌شدید، چطور خداوند دریای سرخ را برای شما خشک کرد و چگونه سیهون و عوج، دو پادشاه اموریان در شرق رود اردن را از بین بردید.

¹¹As soon as we had heard it, our hearts melted, neither did there remain any more spirit in any man, because of you: for Yahweh your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.

¹¹ ‌همین‌که خبر آن به گوش ما رسید همگی از ترس شما به وحشت افتادیم و دل و جرأت خود را از دست دادیم. زیرا خداوند خدای شما، خدای آسمان و زمین است.

¹²Now therefore, please swear to me by Yahweh, since I have dealt kindly with you, that you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a true token;

¹² پس اکنون به نام خداوند قسم بخورید تا همان‌طور که من با شما با مهربانی رفتار کردم، شما هم با فامیل من به خوبی رفتار کنید و نشانه‌ای به من دهید که پدر، مادر، برادران، خواهران من و خانوادهٔ ایشان را از بین نبرید، بلکه از مرگ نجات بدهید.»

¹³and that you will save alive my father, my mother, my brothers, and my sisters, and all that they have, and will deliver our lives from death.”

¹³ آنها به راحاب گفتند: «اگر به آنچه می‌‌گوییم عمل نکنیم، خدا ما را بکشد. اگر تو از نقشهٔ ما چیزی به کسی نگویی، قول می‌دهیم وقتی خداوند این سرزمین را به ما داد، با شما با لطف و مهربانی رفتار کنیم.»

¹⁴The men said to her, “Our life for yours, if you don’t talk about this business of ours; and it shall be, when Yahweh gives us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with you.”

¹⁴ سپس راحاب آنها را با ریسمان از پنجره به پایین فرستاد، چون خانهٔ او در کنار دیوار شهر قرار داشت.

¹⁵Then she let them down by a cord through the window; for her house was on the side of the wall, and she lived on the wall.

¹⁵ راحاب به آنها گفت: «به طرف کوه بروید و مدّت سه روز خود را در آنجا پنهان کنید تا کسانی‌که در تعقیب شما هستند بازگردند، آنگاه پی کار خود بروید.»

¹⁶She said to them, “Go to the mountain, lest the pursuers find you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers have returned. Afterward, you may go your way.”

¹⁶ آنها به راحاب گفتند: «ما به وعده‌ای که به تو داده‌ایم، عمل خواهیم کرد.

¹⁷The men said to her, “We will be guiltless of this your oath which you have made us to swear.

¹⁷ وقتی ما وارد سرزمین شما شدیم، این ریسمان قرمز را به پنجره‌ای که ما را از آن به پایین فرستادی ببند. آنگاه تو باید پدر، مادر، برادران، خواهران و تمام خانوادهٔ پدرت را در خانه‌ات جمع کنی.

¹⁸Behold, when we come into the land, you shall bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which you used to let us down. You shall gather to yourself into the house your father, your mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household.

¹⁸ ‌ هرکسی که از خانهٔ تو خارج شده، به کوچه برود، خونش به گردن خودش می‌‌باشد و گناه ما نخواهد بود. امّا اگر به کسی‌که در خانهٔ تو باشد، صدمه‌ای برسد، ما مسئول خواهیم بود.

¹⁹It shall be that whoever goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood will be on his head, and we will be guiltless. Whoever is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand is on him.

¹⁹ اگر تو از نقشهٔ ما به کسی اطّلاع بدهی، آنگاه ما مجبور نخواهیم بود به وعدهٔ خود که به تو داده‌ایم، عمل کنیم.»

²⁰But if you talk about this business of ours, then we shall be guiltless of your oath which you have made us to swear.”

²⁰ راحاب قبول کرد و آنها را روانه نمود. وقتی آنها رفتند او ریسمان قرمز را به پنجره بست.

²¹She said, “According to your words, so be it.” She sent them away, and they departed. She tied the scarlet line in the window.

²¹ آنها به طرف کوه رفتند و مدّت سه روز در آنجا پنهان شدند تا وقتی‌که فرستادگان پادشاه برگشتند. آنها تمام آن سرزمین را جستجو کردند، ولی جاسوسان را نیافتند.

²²They went, and came to the mountain, and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had returned. The pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but didn’t find them.

²² آنگاه جاسوسان از کوه پایین آمدند و از رود اردن عبور کرده، پیش یوشع پسر نون برگشتند. پس همهٔ وقایع سفر خود را به او گزارش دادند. سپس آنها گفتند: «اکنون به ما ثابت شد که خداوند همهٔ آن سرزمین را به ما داده است؛ زیرا تمام مردم آنجا از ترس ما به وحشت افتاده‌اند.»

²³Then the two men returned, descended from the mountain, passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun; and they told him all that had happened to them.

²³ سپس آنها گفتند: «اکنون به ما ثابت شد که خداوند همهٔ آن سرزمین را به ما داده است؛ زیرا تمام مردم آنجا از ترس ما به وحشت افتاده‌اند.»

²⁴They said to Joshua, “Truly Yahweh has delivered into our hands all the land. Moreover, all the inhabitants of the land melt away before us.”
