¹It happened, when all the kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, who were by the sea, heard how that Yahweh had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we had passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.

¹ پادشاهان اموریان در غرب رود اردن و همهٔ پادشاهان کنعانیان در سواحل دریای مدیترانه، شنیدند که خداوند آب رود اردن را خشک نمود و مردم اسرائیل همگی از آن عبور کردند. بنابراین آنها از مردم اسرائیل بسیار ترسیدند و دل و جرأت خود را از دست دادند.

²At that time, Yahweh said to Joshua, “Make flint knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.”

² آنگاه خداوند به یوشع فرمود: «از سنگ چخماق چاقو بساز و تمام مردان اسرائیل را ختنه کن.»

³Joshua made himself flint knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

³ پس یوشع از سنگ چخماق چاقو ساخت و مردان اسرائیل را بر تپّهٔ غُلفه ختنه کرد.

⁴This is the reason Joshua circumcised: all the people who came out of Egypt, who were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.

⁴ دلیل ختنه این بود که هرچند همهٔ مردان جنگی اسرائیل، هنگامی سرزمین مصر را ترک کردند ختنه شده بودند، امّا در طی چهل سال اقامت خود در بیابان مردند و پسرانی که از آن پس به دنیا آمدند، ختنه نشده بودند.

⁵For all the people who came out were circumcised; but all the people who were born in the wilderness by the way as they came out of Egypt had not been circumcised.

⁵ قوم اسرائیل برای مدّت چهل سال سرگردان بودند. در آن مدّت، همهٔ مردان جنگی که سرزمین مصر را ترک کردند، درگذشتند. چون آنها از خداوند اطاعت نکردند، پس خداوند قسم خورد که نگذارد پای یکی از آنها هم به آن سرزمینی که شیر و عسل در آن جاری است و به مردم اسرائیل وعده فرموده بود، برسد.

⁶For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, until all the nation, even the men of war who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they didn’t listen to the voice of Yahweh. Yahweh swore to them that he wouldn’t let them see the land which Yahweh swore to their fathers that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

⁶ پس یوشع، پسران آن مردان را که قبلاً ختنه نشده بودند، ختنه کرد.

⁷Their children, whom he raised up in their place, were circumcised by Joshua; for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them on the way.

⁷ وقتی مراسم ختنه به پایان رسید، تمام قوم در اردو‌های خود ماندند تا زخمشان بهبود یابد.

⁸It happened, when they were done circumcising all the nation, that they stayed in their places in the camp until they were healed.

⁸ خداوند به یوشع فرمود: «امروز من آن لکهٔ ننگی را که به‌خاطر غلامی‌ در مصر از آن رنج می‌بردید، از شما دور کردم.» پس آن محل را که در آن مراسم ختنه صورت گرفت، جلجال یعنی دور کردن نامید که تا به امروز به همین نام یاد می‌شود.

⁹Yahweh said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you.” Therefore the name of that place was called Gilgal, “Gilgal” sounds like the Hebrew for “roll.” to this day.

⁹ بنی‌اسرائیل در دوران اقامت خود در جلجال نزدیک اریحا، مراسم عید فصح را، در عصر روز چهاردهم ماه برگزار نمودند.

¹⁰The children of Israel encamped in Gilgal. They kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at evening in the plains of Jericho.

¹⁰ روز بعد برای اولین بار از محصولات سرزمین کنعان یعنی نان فطیر و حبوبات برشته شدهٔ آن سرزمین را خوردند.

¹¹They ate unleavened cakes and parched grain of the produce of the land on the next day after the Passover, in the same day.

¹¹ مَنّا دیگر نبارید و بنی‌اسرائیل دیگر هرگز از آن نداشتند، بلکه از آن به بعد از محصولات زمین کنعان خوردند.

¹²The manna ceased on the next day, after they had eaten of the produce of the land. The children of Israel didn’t have manna any more; but they ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

¹² یوشع در نزدیکی‌های شهر اریحا بود که ناگهان مردی که یک شمشیر برهنه در دست داشت، پیدا شد. یوشع پیش او رفته پرسید: «تو دوست ما هستی یا دشمن ما؟»

¹³It happened, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man stood in front of him with his sword drawn in his hand. Joshua went to him, and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our adversaries?”

¹³ آن شخص جواب داد: «هیچ‌کدام، سپهسالار ارتش خداوند هستم.» یوشع به سجده افتاد و گفت: «ای آقا، به بندهٔ خود چه امر می‌‌کنید؟» سپهسالار به او گفت: «کفشهایت را از پایت بیرون آور، زیرا جایی که ایستاده‌ای، مقدّس است.» و یوشع اطاعت کرد.

¹⁴He said, “No; but I have come now as commander of Yahweh’s army.” Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and worshipped, and said to him, “What does my lord say to his servant?”

¹⁴ سپهسالار به او گفت: «کفشهایت را از پایت بیرون آور، زیرا جایی که ایستاده‌ای، مقدّس است.» و یوشع اطاعت کرد.

¹⁵The prince of Yahweh’s army said to Joshua, “Take your shoes off of your feet; for the place on which you stand is holy.” Joshua did so.
