¹Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

¹ در پانزدهمین سال حكومت طیبریوس قیصر، وقتی پنطیوس پیلاطس فرماندار یهودیه و هیرودیس، حاكم استان جلیل و برادرش فیلیپُس، حاكم استانهای ایتوریه و نواحی ترخونیتس، و لیسانیوس حاكم آبلیه بود،

²in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.

² یعنی در زمانی‌که حنا و قیافا كاهنان اعظم بودند، كلام خدا در بیابان به یحیی پسر زكریا رسید.

³He came into all the region around the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for remission of sins.

³ او به تمام نواحی اطراف رود اردن می‌رفت و اعلام می‌کرد كه مردم توبه كنند و برای آمرزش گناهان خود تعمید بگیرند.

⁴As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make ready the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight.

⁴ همچنان‌که در كتاب اشعیای نبی آمده است: «شخصی در بیابان فریاد می‌زند: راهی برای خداوند آماده سازید، طریق او را راست نمایید.

⁵Every valley will be filled. Every mountain and hill will be brought low. The crooked will become straight, and the rough ways smooth.

⁵ درّه‌ها پر شوند، کوهها و تپّه‌ها صاف گردند، کجی‌ها راست خواهند شد راههای ناهموار هموار خواهند گشت

⁶All flesh will see God’s salvation.’” Isaiah 40:3-5

⁶ و همهٔ آدمیان نجات خدا را خواهند دید.»

⁷He said therefore to the multitudes who went out to be baptized by him, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

⁷ انبوه مردم می‌آمدند تا از دست یحیای تعمید بگیرند. او به ایشان گفت: «ای مارها، چه كسی شما را آگاه ساخت تا از خشم و غضب آینده بگریزید؟

⁸Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and don’t begin to say among yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father;’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones!

⁸ پس توبهٔ خود را با ثمراتی كه به بار می‌آورید، نشان دهید و پیش خود نگویید كه ما پدری مانند ابراهیم داریم. بدانید كه خدا قادر است از این سنگها فرزندانی برای ابراهیم بیافریند.

⁹Even now the axe also lies at the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doesn’t bring forth good fruit is cut down, and thrown into the fire.”

⁹ تیشه بر ریشهٔ درختان گذاشته شده و هر درختی كه میوهٔ خوب به بار نیاورد، بریده و در آتش افكنده خواهد شد.»

¹⁰The multitudes asked him, “What then must we do?”

¹⁰ مردم از او پرسیدند: «پس تكلیف ما چیست؟»

¹¹He answered them, “He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise.”

¹¹ او پاسخ داد: «آن کسی‌که دو پیراهن دارد، باید یكی از آنها را به کسی‌که ندارد بدهد و هرکه خوراک دارد، باید همچنین كند.»

¹²Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what must we do?”

¹² باجگیران هم برای گرفتن تعمید آمدند و از او پرسیدند: «ای استاد، ما چه باید بكنیم؟»

¹³He said to them, “Collect no more than that which is appointed to you.”

¹³ به ایشان گفت: «بیش از آنچه مقرّر شده مطالبه نكنید.»

¹⁴Soldiers also asked him, saying, “What about us? What must we do?” He said to them, “Extort from no one by violence, neither accuse anyone wrongfully. Be content with your wages.”

¹⁴ سپاهیان هم پرسیدند: «ما چه ‌كنیم؟» به آنان گفت: «از كسی بزور پول نگیرید و تهمت ناروا نزنید و به حقوق خود قانع باشید.»

¹⁵As the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he was the Christ,

¹⁵ مردم در انتظار به سر می‌بردند و از یكدیگر می‌پرسیدند كه آیا یحیی مسیح موعود است یا نه.

¹⁶John answered them all, “I indeed baptize you with water, but he comes who is mightier than I, the latchet of whose sandals I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire,

¹⁶ امّا او چنین جواب داد: «من شما را با آب تعمید می‌دهم امّا كسی خواهد آمد كه از من تواناتر است و من لایق آن نیستم كه بند كفش او را باز كنم. او شما را با روح‌القدس و آتش تعمید خواهد داد.

¹⁷whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

¹⁷ او چنگال خود را در دست دارد تا خرمن خود را پاک كند و گندم را در انبار جمع نماید، امّا كاه را در آتشی خاموش نشدنی، خواهد سوزانید.»

¹⁸Then with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people,

¹⁸ یحیی با راههای بسیار و گوناگون مردم را تشویق می‌کرد و به آنها بشارت می‌داد

¹⁹but Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s TR reads “brother Philip’s” instead of “brother’s” wife, and for all the evil things which Herod had done,

¹⁹ امّا هیرودیس، كه بر سر موضوع زن برادرش هیرودیا و خلافکاریهای دیگر خود مورد سرزنش یحیی واقع شده بود،

²⁰added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison.

²⁰ با انداختن یحیی به زندان مرتكب كاری بدتر از همه شد.

²¹Now it happened, when all the people were baptized, Jesus also had been baptized, and was praying. The sky was opened,

²¹ پس از آنكه همه تعمید گرفتند، عیسی نیز تعمید گرفت و به دعا مشغول بود كه آسمان گشوده شد

²²and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form as a dove on him; and a voice came out of the sky, saying “You are my beloved Son. In you I am well pleased.”

²² و روح‌القدس به صورت كبوتری بر او نازل شد و صدایی از آسمان آمد: «تو پسر عزیز من هستی. از تو خشنودم.»

²³Jesus himself, when he began to teach, was about thirty years old, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli,

²³ وقتی عیسی مأموریت خود را شروع كرد در حدود سی سال از عمرش گذشته بود و برحسب تصوّر مردم او پسر یوسف بود و یوسف پسر هالی،

²⁴the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,

²⁴ پسر مَتات، پسر لاوی، پسر مِلكی، پسر ینا، پسر یوسف،

²⁵the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai,

²⁵ پسر مَتاتیا، پسر آموس، پسر ناحوم، پسر حِسلی، پسر نَجی،

²⁶the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Joseph, the son of Judah,
