¹It happened in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, when wine was before him, that I took up the wine, and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad before in his presence.

¹ چهار ماه بعد در ماه نیسان، در سال بیستم سلطنت اردشیر شاهنشاه پارس، یک روز هنگامی‌که اردشیر شاهنشاه در حال صرف غذا بود، من برایش شراب بردم. او قبل از آن هرگز مرا غمگین ندیده بود.

²The king said to me, “Why is your face sad, since you are not sick? This is nothing else but sorrow of heart.” Then I was very much afraid.

² پس شاهنشاه از من پرسید: «چرا چهرهٔ تو اندوهگین است؟ تو بیمار نیستی، بدون شک از اندوه بزرگی رنج می‌بری.» آنگاه هراسان شدم

³I said to the king, “Let the king live forever! Why shouldn’t my face be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ tombs, lies waste, and its gates have been consumed with fire?”

³ و پاسخ دادم: «شاهنشاه تا ابد زنده باد! چگونه چهره‌ام اندوهگین نباشد درحالی‌که شهری که آرامگاه نیاکان من در آن قرار دارد، ویران است و دروازه‌هایش در آتش سوخته‌اند؟»

⁴Then the king said to me, “For what do you make request?” So I prayed to the God of heaven.

⁴ شاهنشاه پرسید: «درخواست تو چیست؟» آنگاه به خدای آسمان دعا کردم.

⁵I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, that you would send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers’ tombs, that I may build it.”

⁵ سپس به شاهنشاه گفتم: «اگر مورد لطف و خرسندی اعلیحضرت هستم و ایشان در نظر دارند درخواست مرا اجابت کنند، تقاضا دارم که مرا به سرزمین یهودا به شهری که آرامگاه نیاکان من در آن قرار دارد، بفرستند تا آن را بازسازی کنم.»

⁶The king said to me (the queen was also sitting by him), “For how long shall your journey be? And when will you return?” So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.

⁶ شاهنشاه درحالی‌که ملکه در کنارش نشسته بود از من پرسید که برای چه مدّت خواهم رفت و چه‌وقت بازخواهم گشت. و من به او پاسخ دادم و او با رفتن من موافقت کرد.

⁷Moreover I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the River, that they may let me pass through until I come to Judah;

⁷ آنگاه از شاهنشاه درخواست کردم که به من لطف کرده، نامه‌هایی به فرمانداران استان غرب فرات بنویسد و به ایشان دستور دهد تا به من اجازهٔ سفر به سرزمین یهودا بدهند.

⁸and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple, for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into.” The king granted my requests, because of the good hand of my God on me.

⁸ همچنین درخواست کردم که نامه‌ای به آساف، جنگلبان جنگلهای سلطنتی بنویسد تا اَلوار مورد نیاز برای بازسازی دروازه‌های قلعهٔ مجاور معبد بزرگ و دیوارهای شهر و خانه‌ای را که در آن زندگی کنم، به من بدهد. شاهنشاه همهٔ درخواست‌های مرا پذیرفت زیرا خدا با من بود.

⁹Then I came to the governors beyond the River, and gave them the king’s letters. Now the king had sent with me captains of the army and horsemen.

⁹ شاهنشاه گروهی از افسران ارتش و سواره‌نظام را همراه من فرستاد و من عازم غرب فرات شدم. سپس نامهٔ شاهنشاه را به فرمانداران دادم.

¹⁰When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly, because a man had come to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.

¹⁰ امّا زمانی که سنبلط، از اهالی بیت حورون و طوبیا یکی از مأموران استانهای عمون شنیدند که کسی برای کمک به مردم اسرائیل آمده است، بسیار آشفته شدند.

¹¹So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.

¹¹ پس به اورشلیم رفتم و تا سه روز

¹²I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God put into my heart to do for Jerusalem; neither was there any animal with me, except the animal that I rode on.

¹² راجع به آنچه که خداوند در مورد اورشلیم در دل من گذاشته بود به کسی چیزی نگفتم. سپس نیمه شب برخاسته و با چند نفر از همراهانم بیرون رفتم. تنها حیوانی که با خود بردم الاغی بود که بر آن سوار بودم.

¹³I went out by night by the valley gate, even toward the jackal’s well, and to the dung gate, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and its gates were consumed with fire.

¹³ هنوز هوا تاریک بود که از دروازهٔ درّه در غرب از شهر خارج شدم و به طرف چشمهٔ اژدها در جنوب و از آنجا تا دروازهٔ خاکروبه رفتم و دیوار خراب شدهٔ شهر و دروازه‌های سوختهٔ آن را از نزدیک بازدید کردم.

¹⁴Then I went on to the spring gate and to the king’s pool: but there was no place for the animal that was under me to pass.

¹⁴ آنگاه از قسمت شرقی شهر به سوی شمال به دروازهٔ چشمه و استخر شاهنشاه رفتم. الاغی که سوار بودم، نمی‌توانست از میان خرابه‌ها بگذرد.

¹⁵Then went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall; and I turned back, and entered by the valley gate, and so returned.

¹⁵ پس از وادی قدرون پایین رفتم و دیوار را بازدید ‌کردم، سپس از راهی که رفته بودم بازگشتم و از دروازهٔ درّه وارد شهر شدم.

¹⁶The rulers didn’t know where I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest who did the work.

¹⁶ هیچ‌یک از بزرگان محلی نمی‌دانستند که کجا رفته و چه کرده بودم تا آن زمان به هیچ‌یک از یهودیان، کاهنان، رهبران، بزرگان و کسان دیگری که باید در این کار شرکت می‌کردند، چیزی نگفته بودم.

¹⁷Then I said to them, “You see the evil case that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire. Come, let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we won’t be disgraced.”

¹⁷ آنگاه به ایشان گفتم: «ببینید که به‌خاطر ویرانی اورشلیم و دروازه‌هایش در چه مشکلاتی هستیم، بیایید تا دیوارهای شهر را بازسازی کنیم و به شرمساری خود پایان دهیم.»

¹⁸I told them of the hand of my God which was good on me, as also of the king’s words that he had spoken to me. They said, “Let’s rise up and build.” So they strengthened their hands for the good work.

¹⁸ و به آنان گفتم که چگونه خدا با من بوده و مرا یاری کرده و آنچه را که شاهنشاه به من گفته بود نیز به ایشان گفتم. ایشان پاسخ دادند: «پس بازسازی را آغاز کنیم!» و آمادهٔ کار شدند.

¹⁹But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they ridiculed us, and despised us, and said, “What is this thing that you are doing? Will you rebel against the king?”

¹⁹ ولی هنگامی‌که سنبلط، طوبیا و جشم عرب از نقشهٔ ما باخبر شدند، ما را مسخره کردند و گفتند: «چه می‌کنید؟ آیا می‌خواهید برضد شاهنشاه شورش کنید؟» پاسخ دادم: «خدای آسمان ما را موفّق خواهد کرد، ما خادمان او هستیم و ما شروع به ساختن خواهیم کرد؛ امّا شما هیچ حقّی بر املاک اورشلیم ندارید و نه سهمی در سنّتهای آن.»

²⁰Then answered I them, and said to them, “The God of heaven will prosper us. Therefore we, his servants, will arise and build; but you have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.”

²⁰ پاسخ دادم: «خدای آسمان ما را موفّق خواهد کرد، ما خادمان او هستیم و ما شروع به ساختن خواهیم کرد؛ امّا شما هیچ حقّی بر املاک اورشلیم ندارید و نه سهمی در سنّتهای آن.»
