¹Israel stayed in Shittim; and the people began to play the prostitute with the daughters of Moab:

¹ در زمانی که قوم اسرائیل در درّهٔ اقاقیا اردو زده بودند، مردان آنها با دختران موآب زنا می‌کردند.

²for they called the people to the sacrifices of their gods; and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods.

² این دخترها آنها را دعوت می‌کردند تا در مراسم قربانی که برای بُتهای ایشان برگزار می‌شد، شرکت کنند. مردان اسرائیلی گوشت قربانی را می‌خوردند و بُتهای ایشان را پرستش می‌کردند.

³Israel joined himself to Baal Peor: and the anger of Yahweh was kindled against Israel.

³ به مرور زمان، قوم اسرائیل به پرستش بت بعل‌فغور پرداختند. پس خشم خداوند بر قوم اسرائیل افروخته شد

⁴Yahweh said to Moses, “Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up to Yahweh before the sun, that the fierce anger of Yahweh may turn away from Israel.”

⁴ و به موسی فرمود: «همهٔ رهبران طایفه‌های اسرائیل را در روز روشن در حضور من اعدام کنید تا خشم سهمگین من از سر قوم اسرائیل دور شود.»

⁵Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Everyone kill his men who have joined themselves to Baal Peor.”

⁵ موسی به قضات اسرائیل گفت: «تمام کسانی را که بت بعل‌فغور را پرستش کرده‌اند، اعدام کنید.»

⁶Behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought to his brothers a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

⁶ سپس یکی از مردان اسرائیلی در برابر چشمان موسی و تمام مردمی که در جلوی خیمهٔ عبادت گریه می‌کردند، یک زن مدیانی را با خود به اردوگاه آورد.

⁷When Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand;

⁷ وقتی فینحاس، پسر العازار، نوه هارون کاهن این را دید، نیزه‌ای را به دست گرفت

⁸and he went after the man of Israel into the pavilion, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

⁸ و به دنبال آن مرد، به درون چادری که دختر را به آن برده بود رفت و نیزه را در بدن هردوی آنها فروبرد و به این ترتیب، بلا از سر مردم اسرائیل رفع شد.

⁹Those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.

⁹ با وجود این، بیست و چهار هزار نفر در اثر آن بلا تلف شدند.

¹⁰Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

¹⁰ خداوند به موسی فرمود:

¹¹“Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I didn’t consume the children of Israel in my jealousy.

¹¹ «فینحاس، پسر العازار، نوه هارون کاهن، خشم مرا فرونشاند. او نخواست که به غیراز من خدای دیگری را پرستش کند، بنابراین من هم قوم اسرائیل را تلف نکردم.

¹²Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace:

¹² پس به او بگو که چون او حرمت مرا حفظ کرد و باعث شد که من گناه قوم اسرائیل را ببخشم، من با او یک پیمان ابدی می‌بندم که او و فرزندانش برای همیشه کاهن باشند.»

¹³and it shall be to him, and to his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.’”

¹³ نام مرد اسرائیلی که با آن زن مدیانی کشته شد، زمری بود. او پسر سالو، یکی از رؤسای طایفهٔ شمعون بود.

¹⁴Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianite woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers’ house among the Simeonites.

¹⁴ زن مدیانی هم کزبی نام داشت و دختر صور، یکی از بزرگان خاندان مدیان بود.

¹⁵The name of the Midianite woman who was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a fathers’ house in Midian.

¹⁵ خداوند به موسی فرمود:

¹⁶Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

¹⁶ «مدیان را سرکوب کن و ایشان را از بین ببر. زیرا آنها با حیله و نیرنگ شما را گمراه ساختند و به پرستش بت بعل‌فغور تشویق کردند و واقعهٔ مرگ کزبی این امر را ثابت می‌سازد.»

¹⁷“Harass the Midianites, and strike them;

¹⁷ زیرا آنها با حیله و نیرنگ شما را گمراه ساختند و به پرستش بت بعل‌فغور تشویق کردند و واقعهٔ مرگ کزبی این امر را ثابت می‌سازد.»

¹⁸for they harassed you with their wiles, with which they have deceived you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.”
