1Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s chosen ones, and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness,

این نامه از طرف پولس، بندهٔ خدا و رسول عیسی مسیح است. من مأموریت یافتم كه ایمان برگزیدگان خدا را تقویت كنم و حقیقتی را كه با خداشناسی سازگار است، بیان نمایم.
2in hope of eternal life, which God, who can’t lie, promised before time began;

این حقیقت بر اساس امید به حیات جاودانی است. خدا كه هرگز دروغ نمیگوید، در ازل وعدهٔ آن حیات را به ما داد
3but in his own time revealed his word in the message with which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Savior;

و در زمان معیّن، آن وعده در پیامی که اعلام آن به دستور نجاتدهندهٔ ما خدا، به من سپرده شد، آشكار شد.
4to Titus, my true child according to a common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior.

به تیطُس فرزند حقیقیام كه هردوی ما در یک ایمان مشتركیم، خدای پدر و مسیح عیسی نجاتدهندهٔ ما، به تو فیض و آرامش عطا فرماید.
5I left you in Crete for this reason, that you would set in order the things that were lacking, and appoint elders in every city, as I directed you;

تو را برای این در جزیره كریت گذاشتم تا كارهای عقب افتاده را سر و سامان دهی و چنانکه شخصاً به تو دستور دادم، رهبرانی برای كلیساها در هر شهر بگماری.
6if anyone is blameless, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, who are not accused of loose or unruly behavior.

رهبران باید اشخاصی بیعیب و بیآلایش و صاحب یک زن و دارای فرزندان با ایمانی باشند كه نتوان آنها را به هرزگی و سركشی متّهم ساخت.
7For the overseer must be blameless, as God’s steward; not self-pleasing, not easily angered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for dishonest gain;

زیرا سرپرست كلیسا چون مسئول كار خداست باید بیعیب باشد، نه خودخواه، نه تندخو، نه مست باده، نه جنگجو و نه پولپرست.
8but given to hospitality, a lover of good, sober minded, fair, holy, self-controlled;

بلكه باید مهماننواز، نیكخواه، روشنبین، عادل، پاک و خویشتندار باشد.
9holding to the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able to exhort in the sound doctrine, and to convict those who contradict him.

باید به پیامی كه قابل اعتماد و با تعالیم صحیح سازگار است، محكم بچسبد تا بتواند اطرافیان را با تعلیمی درست تشویق كرده و مخالفان را مُجاب سازد.
10For there are also many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision,

زیرا افراد سركش، یاوهسرا و گمراهكننده بسیارند. این افراد مخصوصاً در بین تازه ایمانان یهودی نژاد پیدا میشوند.
11whose mouths must be stopped; men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for dishonest gain’s sake.

لازم است كه جلوی دهان آنها را گرفت، زیرا بهخاطر تحصیل سودهای ننگآور، با تعلیم چیزهایی که نباید آنها را تعلیم داد، خانوادهها را تماماً برمیاندازند.
12One of them, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, and idle gluttons.”

یكی از انبیای كریتی كه یک نفر از خود آنهاست گفت: «اهالی كریت همیشه دروغگو و حیوانهای پلید، پرخور و تنبلی هستند.»
13This testimony is true. For this cause, reprove them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,

این درست است. به این دلیل آنها را سخت سرزنش كن تا در ایمان سالم باشند
14not paying attention to Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.

و به افسانههای یهود و احكام مردمانی كه حقیقت را رد کردهاند، گوش ندهند.
15To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.

برای پاكان همهچیز پاک است، امّا برای کسانیکه آلوده و بیایمان هستند، هیچ چیز پاک نیست. زیرا هم افكارشان و هم وجدانشان آلوده است.
ادّعا دارند كه خدا را میشناسند، امّا کارهایشان این ادّعا را تكذیب میکند. آنها نفرتانگیز و نافرمانند و برای انجام كار نیک کاملاً بیفایده هستند.
16They profess that they know God, but by their works they deny him, being abominable, disobedient, and unfit for any good work.

ادّعا دارند كه خدا را میشناسند، امّا کارهایشان این ادّعا را تكذیب میکند. آنها نفرتانگیز و نافرمانند و برای انجام كار نیک کاملاً بیفایده هستند.
